四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?

UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition "depending on who needs it".

Nitrogen () and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.

Simard talks about "mother trees", usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down "mother trees" with no awareness of these highly complex "tree societies" or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.

"We didn't take any notice of it" Simard says sadly. "Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance." If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.

1The underlined sentence "the opposite is true" in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees .

    A. compete for survival B. protect their own wealth

    C. depend on each other D. provide support for dying trees

2"Mother trees" are extremely important because they .

    A. look the largest in size in the forest B. pass on nutrition to young trees

    C. seem more likely to be cut down by humans D. know more about the complex "tree societies"

3The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refers to .

    A. how "tree societies" work B. how trees grow old

    C. how forestry industry develops D. how young trees survive

4We can learn from the passage that _______.

    A. trees aren’t as complex as we think

    B. Charles Darwin had the same opinion as Simard

    C. if “Mother trees” are cut down, they won’t make difference to young trees.

    D. trees can share resources with other ones by the underground fungi networks.

  • 25、Their parents gently get into a quiet retirement after 50.

But today’s over-50s would not like to follow that.

Baby boomers believe that middle age lasts until they are 70,a study has found. They said they felt “old” only after entering their 70th year.

The findings show that in advanced years baby boomers say that they are still young. After getting their pensions(养老金), they are refusing to quietly finish their days as their parents.

Baby boomers, or those born between 1945 and 1963, have been called the luckiest generation ever after they enjoyed rising house prices. They have enough pensions and live happily.

The US study found three quarters of all baby boomers considered themselves to be middle-aged or younger, even if they were in their 60s.

In general, baby boomers found once they reached their 60s, it was not as bad as they thought. With improvements in health care they are able to spend more time with their grandchildren, travel and do the things they have been putting off for years because of work commitments(约束).

Mrs Smith, a baby boomer at 64, said, “I wouldn’t describe myself as old. I know clearly I’m not young.” The former (早前的)editor of a fashion magazine added, “When you hit your 50s, a new sense of freedom starts to grow in your heart.”

1We can know from the passage that .

    A. baby boomers are those who retire shortly after 50 years old

    B. baby boomers are those who think their middle age begins at 70

    C. baby boomers are those who were born between 1945 and 1963

    D. baby boomers are those who consider themselves to be middle-aged or younger even if they were 60 years old.

2The underlined word “advanced” in Paragraph 4 means “  ”.

    A. baby   B. teenager   C. mid-age   D. old

3Why are baby boomers happy to face getting old?

    A. Good health care keeps them healthy

    B. Their grandchildren love them so much

    C. They can travel anywhere freely

    D. They can do the things they love

4What can we know about Mrs Smith?

    A. She doesn’t know she is old   B. She feels she is old

    C. She was a reporter   D. She has retired

  • 26、Fairy tale(童话) fiction or not?

One hot debate topic from I Can I Bibi (《奇葩说》) has become popular on Weibo: Should parents tell their children that fairy tales are fake(假的)? Some people think we shouldn’t. Fairy tales give kids hope and teach life lessons. But others think that children need the ability to distinguish (区分) real from fake, and this role is best played by their parents. What’s your opinion?

    YES

    Hu Enqi, 16

There is no doubt that the world of fairy tales is beautiful, but the real world is cruel (残酷的). If children are always deep in fairy tales, they might not adjust(调节) themselves to society. That’s why there are so many “giant babies” in society. It is parents’ duty to tell children that beauty and darkness are coexistent(共存的). They need to be stronger to adapt to (适应) society.

    Li Ziyi, 16

It’s important to tell kids the wisdom in fairy tales, not whether or not they’re fake. If I’m a parent, I will tell my kids: “Dear, the Queen’s poisoned apple is fake, but in our daily lives, fake apples may be many other seductions (诱惑) that you need to be careful of.” Fairy tales can never solve all problems. After all, dangers are always present in both fairy tales and reality (现实).

    NO

    Yuan Siyi, 16

Not every fairy tale is fake — they’re from our lives. The essence (本质) of fairy tales is to teach children the most basic truths based on the real world. The content of fairy tales is not meaningless. Parents could look on them as partners to children when they grow up. Children will understand the truth step by step.

    Hu Pei, 16

As a kid bathed in fairy tales, I don’t want to be told that they are fake. Fairy tales get kids to read, help shape their world outlook, encourage their imaginations and give them entertainment. Even if parents tell the kids the cruel reality, they may miss the point. Instead, they may be filled with fear of the future and the world, which is not our purpose.

【1】According to the passage, “the giant babies” are ___________.

A.those babies who can’t grow up

B.those babies who are big in shape

C.those adults who can adapt to society well

D.those adults who can’t distinguish real from fake

    【2】According to Li Ziyi, ___________.

A.we shouldn’t tell children fairy tales are fake

B.some fairy tales have wisdom while others don’t

C.there are many dangers in different shapes in reality

D.“poisoned apples” needn’t be afraid of because they are fake

【3】From the passage, we can know _________.

A.in fairy tales everything is beautiful and good

B.fairy tales can give kids hope and teach life lessons

C.fairy tales have nothing to do with the real world

D.fairy tales mainly need to tell kids cruelty of reality

  • 27、In Britain you are allowed to drive a car when you are seventeen. You have to get a special two-year driving license before you can start. When you are learning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with you because you aren't allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don't have to go to a driving school--a friend can teach you. The person with you isn't allowed to take the money for the lesson unless he's got a teacher's license.

Before you are allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in your own car, but it has to be fit for the road. In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then answer a few questions. If you don't pass the test, you are allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you want to. In 1970 a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons. When you've passed your test, you don't have to take it again, and you are allowed to go on driving as long as you like, if you are healthy. Britain's oldest driver was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100.

Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children. Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a license. But they didn't have to take a test until 1935. On the early days of car driving, before 1878, cars weren't allowed to go faster than four miles an hour, and someone had to lead the car with a red flag.

【1】Which is NOT necessary for a young man who wants to drive a car alone?

    A. He should reach the age of 17.

    B. He should get a special two-year driving license.

    C. He should learn to drive in a driving school.

    D. He should pass a driving test to get a full license

【2】 A person can't take money for driving lessons unless he _____.

    A. has learnt to drive in a driving school

    B. has a full driving license

    C. has a teacher's license

    D. is given a special two-year driving license

【3】In the driving test, one _____.

    A. can drive his own car, but it must be fit for the road

    B. is usually asked to drive on roads for some time

    C. has to be examined only in car driving skills

    D. can drive round for more than an hour

【4】Which of the following is not true?

    A. There is no limit to the age of an old man who drives a car.

    B. One can take a driving test again and again until he passes it.

    C. There was a special limit to cars before 1878.

    D. A car driver didn't have to get a license until 1935.

【5】Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even .

    A. old men B. young men   C. women   D. children
