四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、In the ancient Arabic tale called Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, the young hero Ali Baba says “Open Sesame” and a door to hidden treasures is opened to him. The old story had a special meaning for Ma Yun. He drew inspiration from it for Alibaba.com: China’s largest e-commerce(电子商务) website.

In 1995 Ma was working for US trading company, when he was introduced to the Internet. “I knew nothing about personal computers. I had never touched a keyboard before,” he said. He searched the word “beer” and saw that nothing came up about Chinese products.

Ma had an idea. Why not build a large Internet market to connect consumers(消费者) and companies from all over the world? That way they could do business online.

That is how Alibaba began. His company grew quickly. But that doesn’ t mean everything went smoothly for Ma. Alibaba had a difficult time in 2000, when many Internet companies failed. He was successful because he managed to attract investment into his company.

But there is a deeper reason.

It is Ma’s attitude. “You deserve(值得) to live your dream,” he said. “Everyone thought I was daydreaming when I started. But the most important thing is that we believed in our dream from day one, to today and tomorrow. Of course we made many mistakes, but we never gave up hope.

Besides the determination(决心), Ma is also smart. For him, success in business is like trying to catch a rabbit. “If there are nine rabbits, focus on catching one—don’t try and catch them all,” he said. “Change your ways if you need to, but don’t change the rabbit. Get one first, put it in your pocket and then catch the others.”

【1】What does the word “it” in the first paragraph refer to(所指)?

    A. The young hero Ali Baba.

    B. The phrase “Open Sesame”.

    C. The old story.

    D. The website.

【2】From Paragraph 2, we know that Ma Yun _____________.

    A. was working in an Internet company in the US

    B. started to learn about computers in 1995

    C. was determined to buy and sell Chinese beer

    D. wanted to produce Chinese personal computers.

【3】 What happened to Ma Yun in 2000?

    A. He attracted investment during a difficult time.

    B. His company grew quickly and smoothly.

    C. His Internet company failed like many others.

    D. He founded his own company.

【4】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

    A. Ma’s good qualities.

    B. The importance of working hard.

    C. Ma’s hobby—catching rabbits.

    D. The secrets of Ma’s success.

  • 25、   Breakfast is food for the brain. And it’s good even for people worrying about their weight. Middle school students who eat breakfast are more likely to have healthy weight than those who don’t eat breakfast. This is true even for students who eat two breakfasts one at home and one at school. “Not skipping(跳过) breakfast helps you not overeat later in the day,” says Marlene Schwartz.

One study has found many kids end up eating two breakfasts. People become worried that kids who eat breakfast both at home and at school might become overweight. In fact, Schwartz now says that’s not what her data(数据) have turned up.

Her group studied 600 middle school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools were asked about their breakfast. About 34 to 44 percent of all students said they usually ate breakfast at home. Almost one in every six kids usually ate breakfast at school. About one in every 10 kids ate breakfast both at home and at school. Eating habits changed as the kids got older. For example, fifth graders were more likely to eat breakfast. But 22 percent of the seventh graders often didn’t eat breakfast. Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight. This was true even for those who ate breakfast at home and at school.

The study found no evidence(证据) of greater weight gain among students who ate double breakfasts.

Why should eating two breakfasts not lead to weight gain? The researchers don’t know yet. But one explanation may be that school breakfast is very healthy and controlled in size. So eating that along with the home breakfast may not be bad for most active and growing middle school students.

1According to Paragraph 1, why do some people NOT want to eat breakfast?

A.Because they are worried about putting on weight.

B.Because they don’t consider it to be important.

C.Because they are tired of eating breakfast at school.

D.Because they don’t have time to eat breakfast.

2Among 600 students that were studied, we can find that ___________.

A.most kids ate breakfast at school B.the kids eating breakfast twice were getting fat

C.more than half of the students didn’t eat breakfast D.seventh graders skipped breakfast more often than fifth graders

3What does Schwartz think about eating two breakfasts?

A.All the girls should stop doing it. B.It can be good for most teenagers.

C.We should try our best to eat a second breakfast. D.Eating two breakfasts is just right for the boys.

4What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Eating breakfast twice will make people put on weight.

B.Giving up breakfast is more likely to help lose weight.

C.Having two breakfasts has little to do with being overweight.

D.Having breakfast at home can make kids stay healthy and thin.

  • 27、   The founder of Huawei seldom spoke to the media, while he let his company's fast growth do the talking. That's changing as Huawei finds itself in a dangerous situation in the US. Ren, 74, tells CNN in an interview that the challenges Huawei faces are just so common for him. "There are always difficulties for me. I never had smooth sailing because when I was young, my family background wasn't good. I had to work really hard to get even just a little bit of opportunity to work."

In 1974, Ren joined the PLA (中国人民解放军) as an engineer. During that period, the country was suffering from terrible food and clothing shortages (短缺). "I had been to college, and people like me could play a role." he said. After the PLA, Ren worked for an oil company before founding Huawei in 1987. It was set up in Shenzhen, which was just a fishing village then.

To get market share, Ren suffered serious depression (抑郁) during the darkest days of the company. Ren pushed staff to work long hours and do whatever it took to save business. Unable to compete in the big cities, Huawei worked on China's small towns and villages. All the time, Ren devoted a lot to research and development, pushing Huawei to create its own technology that would make it compete with its competitors.

Ren worked long hours leaving him little time to build strong relationships with his three children. He has said that while in the PLA, he spent just one month a year with his family. After starting Huawei, "I had to spend 16 hours a day in the office," he said. He once asked his kids whether they’d like him to spend more time with the family or work to "build a platform (平台)" on which they could grow. His children chose the latter (后者).

1What is the meaning of the underlined word "smooth sailing"?

    A.自由航行 B.一帆风顺 C.风平浪静

2Which is the correct order of the following events?

    a. Ren built up Huawei in Shenzhen.

    b. America made some trouble to Huawei.

    c. Ren joined the army and worked as a soldier.

    d. Ren went to college.

    e. Ren worked for an oil company.

    A.c-d-e-b-a B.d-c-e-a-b C.b-c-d-a-e

3In Ren's opinion, what can make Huawei compete with its competitors most?

A.Having its own technology B.Being more hardworking C.Finding proper places

4From the last paragraph, we know that __________.

A.Ren's children preferred to see Ren build a platform for them.

B.Ren tried to spend time with his kids although he was very busy.

C.Ren felt sorry for his children and regretted working long hours.
