24、 Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous (宽宏大量的); be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, or enjoy, like our hobbies and your interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike (相同). But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

Xia Boyu, 70, is the first Chinese double amputee(被截肢者) to have reached the top of Mount Qomolangma, the highest mountain in the world, Du Juan reports.
On May 14, 2018, Xia, who is the same age as the People’s Republic of China, made his dream come true by reaching the top of Qomolangma(Mount Everest) seven days after leaving Base Camp on the Nepal side of the mountain.
Success didn’t come easy. He had failed to reach the 8,844-meter peak four times before becoming one of the few double amputees to reach the top of the world.
The first climb by a Chinese team to the peak of Qomolangma was in 1960. Xia, who was born in Chongqing in 1949, was chosen by the Chinese mountaineering team in 1974. In 1975, the second mountaineering team set off. All the teammates finally reached the top, but Xia suffered bad frostbite(冻伤) in his legs, which had to be amputated at the knees.
“It’s beyond imagination how difficult it was to accept the fact that I would suddenly become a disabled person.” Xia recalls. “I could not imagine a fixture of sitting in a wheelchair, perhaps forever?”
When a doctor told him that with artificial limbs(义肢) he could live a normal life like anyone else, and he would even be able to do a lot of physical exercise, his hopes rose and he made up his mind to climb Qomolangma again.
To prepare for his fifth attempt(尝试) on Qomolangma, every day he got up at five in the morning and completed 90 minutes of strength training at home. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays he would ride a bike to Fragrant Hills, 30 kilometers from his home, walk to the top and then ride back home. 27、 For four years, Christopher Schacht lived a life on the go. He traveled 65,000 miles to 45 different countries. Around the world 50 Bucks( 元 )tells of Schacht’s great journey, from his town in northern Germany to some of the most faraway places in the world and back again. Thanks to a translation by Jane Gesme, this international bestseller in English is on sale now.
Reading Schacht’s book is like ping-ponging between worrying about your daredevil (胆大妄为的) son and being proud of your older brother. At parts, I was really frightened for his safety. In order to eat. he worked any job he could find -sailor. waiter, gold miner, model. He mostly slept in hammocks (吊床) on the street or else in his tent. He hitchhiked(搭车) everywhere, even across oceans as he found jobs on sailing boats in return for food and a bed.
However, Schacht’s book does not doubt people. He believes that many people in the world are kind, helpful and curious. This friendliness probably saved his life many times.
Though not perfect for everyone. Schacht’s ways of traveling force him to look for help from others. He meets a Canadian living on a boat in Colombia, who used to be an excellent cook. Schacht needs to learn how to cook in order to get a job on a ship to Panama. In these high-stress moments, Schacht only has a little time to find a way to his next destination ( 目 的 地 ). The relationships he makes along the way are life-changing. As he learns. “In most situations it is quite easy to help someone move forward when they would not have done it alone.”
From sailing across the equator (赤道) to speaking bad Korean in Gyeongju Schacht takes us around the world in surprising detail. Like Schacht, we are also thankful for the journey. We feel even more pleased that Schacht chose to share it with the world.
