    answer, I , excite , kind , order , easy , different , help , luck , train

    Dear Miss Li,

I’d like to thank you for giving money to Animal Helpers. I’m sure you know that this group was set up to help disabled people like me. You 1to make it possible for me to have Lucky. Lucky makes a big 2to my life. Let me tell you my story.

What would it be like to be blind or deaf? Or imagine you can’t walk or use your hands 3.Most people would never think about this, but many people have these difficulties. I can’t use my arms or legs well, so normal things like 4the telephone, opening and closing doors, or carrying things are difficult for me.Then one day last year, a friend of 5helped me out. She talked to Animal Helpers about getting me a special 6dog. She also thought a dog might cheer me up. I love animals and I was 7about the idea of having a dog.

After six months of training with a dog at Animal Helpers, I was able to bring him home. My dog’s name is Lucky---a good name for him because I feel very 8to have him. You see, I’m only able to have a “dog helper” because of your 9!

Lucky is very clever and understands many English words. He can understand me when I give him 10. For example, I say, “Lucky! Get my book,” and he does it at once.

  • 21、   Have you ever walked along the Silk Road? Do you know the famous Silk Road? The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes (贸易路线) connecting the East and the West. People used to do business with others from different countries along these routes. Scientists and archaeologists (考古学家) believe people began to travel along the Silk Road centuries ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world, the Silk Road had covered almost 6,500 kilometers. It started from China and finally got to Rome.

  • 22、When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him doing lots of housework such as taking out the rubbish and sending newspapers. But when he grew up, he was better than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.

This is the finding of a 40-year study than followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who worked hard in childhood had a richer and a happier future. “Children who worked in the home in childhood got more abilities and came to feel they were important members of society.” said Daniel Brown, the psychologist (心理学家)who made the study. “And because they felt good about themselves, and others felt good about them.”

Brown’s study followed these children in great information. They made the study about the children at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Brown, the researchers compared (比较)the children’s mental-health scores with their childhood-activity scores. The children got more points for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.

Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and ability—the underpinnings (基础)of emotional (情感的) health. They also help him understand that people must work together and work toward common goals. The mast competent (合格的) adults are those who know how to do this.

Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live great in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”

【1】What do we know about Justin Tong?

    A.He enjoyed a happy life.

B.He felt sorry for the other kids.

    D.He hardly collected rubbish.

A.Children who enjoy happier and richer lives.

B.Children who work in the home in childhood.

C.Children who take part in Daniel Brown’s study.

D.Children who feel good about people around them.

【3】How did Brown follow the children in his study?

    A.By giving housework and praise.

    B.By interviewing and giving scores.

C.By setting goals and showing love.

D.By solving problems and testing them.

  • 23、   It’s late at night. A car stops in the middle of a forest. After dropping off their three teenagers, the parents say “good luck” and drive away. The teenagers, totally lost, have to find their way back home by themselves.

It may sound crazy to you, but this is a tradition with a long history for Dutch parents called “dropping”. Dutch people believe that children should not depend too much on their parents and should learn how to solve problems through activities like “dropping”.

However, for many other parents around the world, their top worry is their children’s safety. After all, why should they put their children at risk when there are many other ways to develop their independence?

People have many different opinions about parenting (育儿). All parents want their children to be happy, healthy and successful. In China, for example, many parents spend much money on summer vacation activities for their children. They want their children to enjoy their vacation as much as possible.

But some parents try too hard and become “helicopter ( ) parents”—just the opposite of “dropping”. They worry too much about their children and pay attention to everything they do—like helicopters flying over their children. In their eyes, children need to be protected all the time.

But this might not be a good parenting style either, according to American parenting expert Kenneth Ginsburg. As Ginsburg writes, parents should keep a balance (平衡) by “making sure their children don’t crash (碰撞) against the rocks, but allowing them to ride the waves (波浪).”

1For Dutch people, “dropping” can help children .

    A.good luck B.safety C.grades D.success

3Which one of the following pictures can best show “helicopter parents”?

    A.A B.B C.C D.D

4According to Kenneth Ginsburg, parents should   .

A.find a balance between keeping safe and letting go

B.depend a lot on their children in the future

C.let their children take risks all the time

    D.watch their children doing everything
