24、 When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language. Take the sentence “How do you do?”as an example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what is your translation? It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.
Languages do not just have different sounds; they are different in many ways. It’s important to master(掌握)the rules for word order in the study of English, too. If the speaker puts words in a wrong order, the listener can’t understand the speaker’s sentence easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes. But sometimes the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change. Let’s see the difference between the two pairs of sentences.
“She only likes apples.”
“Only she likes apples.”
“I have seen the film already.”
“I already have seen the film.”

25、With the development of science and industry, great changes have taken place in China, especially transportation. Fewer people are expected to fly between the two cities—Beijing and Shanghai. With flights reducing, Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway has become very popular. But the cars on the high-speed railway will cause more environmental problems and increase carbon emission. Satellite cities of Beijing and Shanghai are growing and developing rapidly. So people working in the two big cities may choose to buy houses in a place like Langfang, Hebei Province, because it is less crowded and polluted, and houses there are a lot bigger and much cheaper. Besides, people living in such a city like Langfang would use more cars. The increasing cars increase carbon emission and the gases do harm to environment.

26、You either have it, or you don’t—a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map while others can lose themselves in the next street?
Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory(理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”
Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
If you are using a map, turn it to the way you are facing.
If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree—something easy to recognize(辩认). Note landmarks(地标) on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
The simple way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or wells in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tall buildings or hills which can help to find out where you are.
Now you will never get lost again!
