He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.

26、When I was a foreign teacher in China, every day I taught English to my students and they taught me about China. One day the topic turned to saying "I love you". I was shocked to learn that not one of my students had said this to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them. "Does your mom love you?" "Of course ,"they answered.
"How do you know ?"was my logical question. They responded that their moms cooked and always told them what they were doing wrong to show their caring. I was stunned. So mom's cooking and criticizing read out as "I love you ". "Then how do you say 'I love you 'to her?" They agreed that getting good grades, followed by good jobs would be how they showed their love.
I come from a country where most people are expressive enough, so I repeated these questions in classes over time. Gradually, I began to get different response. Some of them had exchanged those sentiments(情感) with their moms.
One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged(拥抱)her. This had never happened before, but her mom said, "Now that you have gone I have more time to myself. I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and I decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you."
In my family we all say "I love you" a lot .While it is true that we often say the words without having great depth(深度)of feelings at that moment, it is almost like a blessing(祝福) we give each other. Those three little words carry a world of meaning ,even when said as a greeting(问候), but most especially if they are the last words we say to or hear from those we love.
【1】The foreign teacher_______.
A. comes from America B. is a young woman
C. is expressive enough D. knows much about China
【2】The word “stunned ” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “___________”.
A. afraid B. bored C. surprised D. angry
【3】Chinese people prefer to show love by________.
A. saying "I love you" B. buying some food
C. doing wrong D. doing something helpful
【4】In Paragraph 4,what's the real meaning of the mom's hugging?
A. She is meeting her daughter at the door.
B. She loves her daughter and misses her.
C. She is glad that she has more time to herself
D. She finds it interesting to hug her daughter.
【5】What's the main idea of the passage?
A. Say "I love you"more to your family.
B. Say "I love you "a lot to Chinese people .
C. Say "I love you "as a greeting to others.
D. Say "I love you "without great depth of feelings.
27、What makes us who we are? This question has two typical answers. One is the environment around us when we grow up, and the other is our genes (基因). In English, this is called the “nature versus nurture (环境因素) debate”. Nature means genes, whereas nurture means environment, including the people around you.
There is a famous saying: “Give me a child until the age of 7 and I’ll show you the man.” The meaning is that the environment in the early part of our life has the biggest effect on our adult life. Now, there is scientific research to support this famous saying.
Scientists at the universities of Exeter, UK and Hamburg, Germany did studies on birds. They found that their personalities (性格) were affected most by the birds around them when they grew up—more so than genes. They watched small birds in new environments, and wrote down how much they explored. Birds that grew up with very curious birds were more curious themselves.
Nick Royle from the University of Exeter in the UK said the research was surprising because it shows that “for these birds, personality is mainly decided by environment”. However, human personalities are a lot more complicated, so there is much we still don’t know. The nature versus nurture debate will continue for a long time, if not forever.
【1】What does the saying in the second paragraph tell people?
A.Seven-year-old children don’t know much.

B.类似的

D.Scientific research done on birds.

Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other. Getting to know others may help you 【3】 why they do things differently. Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad. When you know the reasons, you will be able to think about things from other perspectives (角度). This way, tolerance 【4】 us to keep an open mind and an even temper(温和的脾气).
You need to remember an old saying, "Treat others how you want to be treated." You would like to be treated 【5】 by your classmates, so it is important to treat them the same way. If you tolerate 【6】, it does not mean that you have to like it. No one is asking you to change who you tolerate are 【7】 what you believe in.
