24、 How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and, old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities(责任) to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What's more, life is always giving new things to the child-things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well known. But a child has his pains; he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has wrongly done.
When a young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
【1】According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that________.
A.life for a child is fairly easy
B.a child is always loved whatever he does
C.if much is given to a child, he must do something in return
D.only children are interested in life
【2】Which of the following statement is NOT true according to the passage?
A.People are always happy with their life.
B.Life is more interesting for children than for adults.
C.Adults are freer to do what they want to do.
D.A young man has to work if he wants to live comfortably.
【3】The main idea of the passage is that ________.
A.life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
B.young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
C.childhood is the most enjoyable time in one's life
D.one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life
25、The story is told about two old people named Davide and Rosy Jackson. Both of them had very bad memory. For example, Rosy would forget to cook dinner, or Davide would show up for work on Sunday, thinking it was Monday. One winter they were to take a long plane trip. When they arrived at the airport, there were ten minutes left. In that situation anyone would get onto the plane right away, But Mr and Mrs Jackson did not do so. They went to buy some flight insurance (保险)first. After they put a two-pound note into a machine, their insurance policy came out. “Who would get the money if the plane crashed (坠毁), I wonder? ” asked Rosy. “My mother,of course.” Her husband replied, “we’ll post the policy to her, now quickly, give me a stamp, will you?” he said. “The plane is going to take off in another minutes.” Davide put the stamp on the envelope, dropped it into the postbox, and suddenly let out a cry. What do you suppose happened to him? He had posted their plane tickets to his mother!

26、TV was one of the greatest inventions in the 20th century. Nowadays, nearly every household has at least one TV set.
Television came into being(出现)based on the inventions and discoveries of many scientists. On April 7, 1927, the first public television programme was broadcast in the USA. The signals(信号) were received on a very small screen. It was only about the size of a business card. The pictures were reddish(微红色的) and not clear.
In the 1930s, bigger screens appeared with black-and-white pictures. However, a snowy picture was the best many TV viewers(观众) could hope for. Often, they could only get one station, and only when the weather conditions were good.
When World War Ⅱ(1939—1945) began, the development of TV stopped. There were a very small number of TV sets in the hands of the public. By 1945, there were fewer than 7,000 working TV sets in the USA. A TV set cost about half the price of a car at that time.
The time after World War Ⅱ is considered one of the golden periods of television. Families saved money during the war years, and wanted to buy a lot of things after the war. TV sets were soon put onto the ‘must-have’ list. 1950—1959 was an exciting period for television. Colour television and remote controls came out during this time. By 1955, the cost of TV sets came down a lot. Instead of being equal to half the price of a car, they were now just equal to the cost of a new set of tyres(轮胎). This marked the beginning of the booming age of TV.

27、In early November of 1503, during Christopher Columbus’ fourth and final trip to America, his ship was seriously damaged in a storm. Columbus and his men had to live on a small island for several months while they tried to repair their ship and return to Spain.
At first, the local people on the island were very kind to the European visitors, giving them all the food and clothes they needed to survive. However, as the months passed, the local people became more and more unhappy with their guests, who were tricking and stealing from them. Finally the locals decided to stop helping. Without food or any way to leave the island, Columbus’ group was soon in serious trouble.
Luckily for Columbus, he had a book about the stars and planets on his ship. It described the movements of all the objects in the night sky. The book, written by a well-known German scientist, said there would be a total lunar eclipse (月食) on the evening of February 29, 1504 and how long it would last.
Columbus worked out the difference in time between Germany and North America. He then had a meeting with the local leaders just before the eclipse would take place. In this meeting, Columbus told them his god was angry because the local people were no longer giving food. So his god would take away the moon to punish them. At the moment Columbus finished talking, just as he had planned, the moon began disappearing.
The local leaders grew frightened and quickly agreed to provide Columbus with food and anything else he wanted. But first, Columbus’ god had to return the moon. Columbus told them he would have to discuss the idea with his god on his ship. Knowing the moon would stay completely hidden for about 48 minutes, Columbus returned just before the moon began to reappear. From that day on, until they finally left, Columbus and his men no longer had any trouble getting the food they needed.

28、根据短文内容及首字母提示,填写所缺单词。
Why some people become lifelong readers?
They can be identified by the bound, printed stacks of paper they read on their lap. They are, in other words, readers.
Joining their groups seems e【1】: Get a book, read it and Voila! But behind that easy process is a question of motivation(动力)—of why some people s【2】 in getting great pleasure from reading while others don’t.
As Daniel Willingham e【3】 in his book Raising Kids Who Read, three points have a major i【4】 on whether someone becomes a lifelong reader or not.
First, a child needs to be a “fluent decoder”(流利的解码员)—that is, able to smoothly “go from print on the page to words in the m【5】.” This is something that school teaches, but parents can help with it t【6】 reading to and with their kids. Reading to and with kids at an early a【7】 can give them a good start when they start school.
S【8】, Willingham said, these fluent decoders usually have a lot of background knowledge about the world. “The main point of whether a child or an adult understands a text is how m【9】 they already know about the topic,” Willingham noted.
If those two things are in place, the final part will be “motivation - you have to have a positive opinion toward reading and a positive self-image as a reader,” Willingham said.
There are, as so many parents all understand, a number of advantages of being able to read about future life, but the focus should be on helping kids discover the inner v【10】 in it, in the moment. After that, other good things will come.
