  • 24、Uluru is the world’s second largest sandstone rock. It is 348 meters high, 3.6 kilometers long and nearly 2 kilometers wide. It is believed that the rock has been there for 600 million years. The Aborigines (澳大利亚土著居民) began living in the area 10,000 years ago.

Many tourists can’t help climbing Uluru when they see it. But climbing it is not a good idea because it’s very dangerous, especially after rainfall. Over 30 climbers have died since the 1950s. What do you know about William Shakespeare? Have you ever read any of his works? Do you think teenagers should spend time trying to understand Shakespeare’s works? Why or why not?

    Yes ! — Linda

Shakespeare is regarded as one of the best writers in history. He produced many great works. While we enjoy these stories, we can learn many things.

First, Shakespeare teaches us history. Of course, this was not the writer’s intention. However, Shakespeare liked to talk about his own society in his plays. Through the reading of his works, we can find out what was going on when he was alive.

. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, words like “rival” and “hostile” all first appeared in Shakespeare’s plays. We can get a better understanding of the English language through these works.

Moreover, few writers in history have been able to describe the human condition as well as Shakespeare had. By exploring different human conditions, we can learn how to relate to one another better.

In conclusion, I think schools should teach Shakespeare.

    No ! — Louis

I don’t think schools should teach Shakespeare. The biggest reason is that it is not useful. Let’s be honest: When do you need to use Shakespeare outside of school?

Many of my classmates consider studying Shakespeare to be a waste of time. If we didn’t study Shakespeare, we could spend more time learning things that are more useful.

In addition, Shakespeare is too boring. The stories don’t deal with modern problems. The language is old. It is difficult for students to understand it. Some young people will lose interest

in literature all together if they are required to study Shakespeare.

【1】Which of the following sentences can be put in the  in Paragraph 4?

A.Shakespeare also teach us the ways of learning English

B.Shakespeare also helped create thousands of English words

C.And the words in Shakespeare’s works are easy to understand

D.And Shakespeare teaches us how to express ourselves in English

【2】Louis thinks schools shouldn’t teach Shakespeare mainly because .

A.Shakespeare is seldom used outside of school

B.some stories in Shakespeare’s works are not real

C.stories in Shakespeare’s works don’t deal with modern problems

D.the language in Shakespeare’s works is difficult for students to understand

【3】According to the article, Linda and Louis are mainly talking about .

    A.why Shakespeare’s works are great

    B.what Shakespeare’s works are about

    C.how Shakespeare’s works influence people’s life

D.whether Shakespeare should be taught in school or not

  • 26、Many people use their mobile phones as the alarm clock and are more used to checking e-mails before sleeping. However, these habits are becoming sleeping problems.

Several years ago, my boss used to stay up working on her mobile phone and got badly ill because of that. Now she always leaves her phone in another room at night. And she encourages friends to do so. “I sent each of my friends the same christmas gift an alarm clock so that they could stop using their phones as the alarm clock,” she said.

If your mobile phone wakes you up in the morning, it may also be keeping you up at night. A study in 2008 showed that people in mobile phone radiation(辐射)mostly had sleeping problems. And according to a Swedish study, a quarter of young people in this country feel like there must be phones around them. Most of them feel sorry for not returning messages. So they even have to reply to their friends before sleeping.

So what kind of people prefer to use mobile phones in their bedrooms? A recent study has shown that three-quarter people aged between 18 and 34 prefer to sleep with their phones near them. That number falls off a little in middle age, but only people aged 65 and older are used to leaving the phone in another room while sleeping.

【1】The underlined word “that” refers to “_____”.

    A. using the mobile phone as the alarm clock

    B. checking e-mails

    C. staying up working on the mobile phone

    D. leaving the mobile phone in the bedroom

2According to the Swedish study, ____ of young people in Sweden always put phones around them while sleeping.

    A. 25% B. 50% C. 75%   D. 100%

3According to the recent study, people _____ prefer to sleep with their phones near them.

    A. aged 12 and 18   B. aged between 18 and 34

    C. in middle age   D. aged over 65

  • 27、   Teachers say that the digital(数字) age has had a good influence and a not-so-good influence on American teenagers. More than 2,000 middle and high school teachers took an online survey. Researchers also spoke with teachers in some groups. Most teachers think the Internet and digital search tools have had a mostly positive influence on their students' research habits and skills. But at the same timesome teachers also point out some problems in teenagers' using digital search tools.

The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the College Board and the National Writing Project. Judy Buchanan is the director of the National Writing Project and a co-writer of the report. She says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster. "Both teachers and students really welcome these tools because they make learning exciting. And the goal is to really help students become creators of something meaningful, and not just users of the online information.”

But one problem the survey found is that these technologies make teenagers have short attention spans(持续时间). As there is huge amount of information about different subjects on the Internet, teenagers' attention is easily drawn away from their research.

Another problem the survey found is that many students trust the information they find on the Internet too much. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills to judge the online information. They need to learn a lot to tell if the information is believable. It's something that really has to be paid attention to.

One more problem the survey found is something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online. Many students think "doing research" now means just doing a quick search on Google. Teachers say the result is a drop in the wish and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. That is, they are overly dependent on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research librarians.

Many teachers also say that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

1The result of the survey shows   .

A.digital search tools need to be greatly improved

B.digital search tools are generally good for teenagers

C.teenagers have difficulty in using digital search tools

D.American teachers enjoy using digital search tools

2Using digital search tools makes teenagers   .

A.less trusting of online information B.more independent in doing research

C.more willing to work hard to find answers D.less able to pay full attention while searching

3To do better in research, teenagers should   .

A.spend more time searching online B.ask their teachers for more advice

C.make better use of printed materials D.learn more knowledge of search tools
