24、The rules of athletic track events (田径竞赛) are simple: the athlete who crosses the finish line first is the winner. There are rules for starting, running and finishing.
●Starting
In races of 1, 500 meters to 10, 000 meters, the athletes do not begin running on tracks, and the start line is curved (弯曲的). This means that all athletes begin the same distance from the finish.
When an athlete is getting ready to run in an event like the 100 or 200 metre sprint, they bend down and touch the track with their hands in the “set position”.
After taking the set position, the athlete must wait for the starter’s gun to be fired. If the athlete starts before the gun, it is a false start and the athlete will be disqualified (取消资格).
●Running the race
In all races that use lanes, each athlete must keep inside his lane all the time or be disqualified. An athlete who affects another athlete’s race is disqualified.
●The finish
An athlete finishes the race when his chest (胸部) or stomach reaches the finish line, but the head, neck, arms, legs, hands or feet are not included.

26、 As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, do people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder(文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location(位置)better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory(交互记忆)”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
【1】What can we learn about the first experiment?
A.Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C.The first group did not try to remember the information.
D.The second group did not understand the information.
【2】In transactive memory, people ________.
A.keep the information in mind
B.change the quantity of information
C.organize information like a computer
D.remember how to find the information
【3】What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?
A.We are using memory differently.
B.We are becoming more intelligent.
C.We have poorer memories than before.
D.We need a better way to access information.
27、Everybody makes decisions in daily life. They can be as important as what you will do in the future or as simple as what you will eat for breakfast. Any decision could be the turning point of your life.
I made an important decision when I was in Junior 3.
Before I made that decision I wasn’t a good student. I didn’t listen to my parents or teachers, and my grades became poor. Then came the high school entrance exam.
At the turning point of my life, my mom wanted to have a conversation with me. I felt impatient but when I looked at her eyes, I felt I couldn’t refuse. Instead of asking me to study hard, to my surprise, Mom just asked what I wanted to do in the future. Without thinking too much, I just said I would like to study hard.
Mom smiled and asked again: “I asked: what do you WANT to do?”
I had never seriously thought about the question before. So, I kept silent.
“Whether you want to go on studying or enter the society,” she went on, “it is your own decision. It should be made by yourself, not anyone else, including me. ” After saying that, she had tears in her eyes.
For the first time in my life I was asked to make my own decision. I sat in my chair and thought about my life, my future and what kind of person I wanted to become.
It took me what seemed to be ages to make the biggest decision so far in my life—I wanted to be a man who makes a difference in the world. To achieve that, I needed to study hard.
The path to my future became clear to me. I didn’t act rebelliously(叛逆地) any more. With passion (激情) in my heart, I studied hard.
