21、People are motivated to do activities by many different factors. For me the main factors that are involved are competition, the desire for achieving greatness, the satisfaction of completing projects, and enjoyment.
Since I am a twin, a sense of competition is deep rooted in my brain. Healthy competition can push us to do fantastic things. It makes us strive for a certain goal and gets us to do things faster. However, I do not think competition should become harmful. When anger, frustration, and depression is a result of competition, it is not healthy. Yet, competition can bring about respect, friendship, and mutual gain. In the case with my twin brother, we have pushed ourselves to be good at sports, music, school, and even at work. This competitive spirit has leaked into my life without my twin around. In a sense, I reproduce my twin brother in other people. I always try to be number one at whatever I do—or at least in the top three. There are times this attitude becomes unhealthy, as I get frustrated if I give everything to a competition or activity and produce only average results. But as the years passed, I have gotten better at handling failure and defeat. All in all, I think I finish and do well in many areas of my life for the simple fact that I want to do well in them. The feeling of doing well against competent opponents is satisfying.
I enjoy the feeling of completing an important project. For instance, last year, I finished a poetry collection with my late father’s poems and my own poems. It was an honor to him and his work. In a way, I felt that his death was not in vain and that his work was proved even more through this collection. It is hard to describe the moment of knowing when such an important project is set to rest: it is almost like you are ready to die. You sense that a chapter of your life has closed and you are now a new person. These deep emotions motivate me to complete projects on a regular basis.
The simplest factor that motivates me to do something is enjoyment. There are people who do activities they do not enjoy for decades. I am not one of those people. I can work on tasks I do not like for a while, but in the end, my main focus should be on something that I enjoy. If I find joy in doing a certain work, I engage in it for a large part of the day, or even all day without tiring. Tiredness in most cases, in my life, is due to a lack of enjoyment in the work being done.
Each person has his or her own motivating factors. I hope this reflection has allowed you to dip deeper into your true nature.

22、For 20 years, two brothers living in the dirty neighborhood of Wazirabad in India’s capital, Delhi, have been treating wounded black kites (鸢) that fall from the city’s skies.
Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad rescue birds of prey—mostly injured by paper kite strings—and carry them to a basement garage at home. Here, they begin nursing them to health: cleaning and bandaging wounds, fixing wings and broken bones.
Small miracles happen in the basement. Here lives are saved, a living is made and there’s some happiness too. “You don’t care for things because they share the same country, religion or politics,” say the brothers. “Life itself is relationship. That’s why we can’t abandon the birds.”
The brothers talk about how a neighborhood bird hospital refused to treat the first kite they rescued because it was a “non-vegetarian bird”. At that time, they, were teenage bodybuilders and that’s how they “came to know about flesh and muscles”. They figured out ways to bandage the kites. They became passionate about birds. “We’d lie on the ground, watching the elegant flights in the sky,” they say. “The head would spin. Have you ever felt dizzy looking into the sky?”
The street outside the brothers’ home becomes a smelly pool of sewage water which comes into the basement during the rainy season. Pigs wander in a muddy channel. Air quality reaches dangerous peaks. Yet there’s life and. hope. Monkeys climb playfully over some electric wires that hang unsteadily over narrow streets. An airplane in the sky is reflected in a pool of quiet water.
When the weather clears, skies are filled with paper kites. And then the birds begin dropping, and the brothers are back at their job. Sometimes the birds fall after bumping against buildings in the smog or getting entangled (缠住) in overhead wires. At one point, there were more than 100 wounded birds in the basement. 23、British sculptor Jason Taylor has made it his mission to use his talent to conserve our ecosystems by creating underwater museums. Over the years, the environmentalist has put over 850 massive artworks underwater worldwide. On February 1, 2021, Taylor launched his latest work---The Underwater Museum of Cannes.
“The main goal was to bring attention to the fact that our oceans need our help,” Taylor told Dezeen. “Ocean ecologies have been destroyed by human activity in the Mediterranean over the past few decades, and it is not obvious what is taking place when observing the sea from afar.”
The Underwater Museum of Cannes contains 6 sculptures featuring local residents of various ages. They range from Maurice, an 80-year-old fisherman, to Anouk, a 9-year-old student. Towering over 6-feet-tall and weighing 10 tons, the faces are sectioned into two parts, with the outer part like a mask. The mask indicates that the world’s oceans appear powerful and unbeatable from the surface but house an ecosystem that is extremely fragile to careless human activities.
Though the waters surrounding the sculptures now appear a pristine blue, the seabed was filled with old boat engines, pipes, and other human-made trash when the project began about four years ago. Besides removing the trash, Taylor also restored the area’s seagrass. Just one square meter of the seagrass can generate up to 10 liters of oxygen daily. The seagrass also helps prevent coastal erosion and provides habitats for many ocean creatures.
“The idea of creating an underwater museum was to draw more people underwater and develop a sense of care and protection,” Taylor told Dezeen. “If we threw unwanted waste near a forest, there would be a public outcry. But this is happening every day in our surrounding waters and it largely goes unnoticed.”
【1】What are the underwater museums intended to do?
A.To make huge profits.
B.To raise awareness of protecting the ocean.
C.To show Jason Taylor’s talent.
D.To draw attention to endangered sea animals.
【2】Why does the outer part of the sculptures look like a mask?
A.To popularize the features of the locals.
B.To remind people to protect themselves.
C.To reflect people’s protection of the ocean.
D.To stress the sensitiveness of the ecosystem.
【3】What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.How the project was started.
B.How the seagrass was restored.
C.What recovery effort the project made.
D.Why the surroundings were improved.
【4】What can we infer from what Jason Taylor said in the last paragraph?
A.The situation of the ocean is easily ignored.
B.The destruction caused to the ocean is noticeable.
C.Forests play a more important role in ecosystems.
D.People have zero tolerance to damage done to nature.
24、 Many students have trouble sitting quietly. They play with pencils, talk out of turn, and jump to do things before thinking. Others can sit still but find it hard to focus on classwork. They may daydream, struggle to organize their work and forget to do assignments.
Most people feel restless or unglued from time to time, but some feel this way almost all the time. Nearly one out of ten kids have ADHD ( Attention-Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder ). But ADHD does not have to be a roadblock to achievement. Here, two professionals in their fields share the secrets of their success.
Astronaut Scott Kelly has flown on four space tasks, including one that lasted close to a year. But when he was growing up, he had trouble focusing in school. As a result, he earned low grades. I read a novel in college about the space program. The book motivated me to study harder and become a much better student and eventually, an astronaut. The lesson I learned was: Don’t give up on yourself. Find something or someone that motivates you and use that to help motivate yourself.
Figure skater Zachary Donohue placed fourth for ice dancing at the 2018 Winter Olympics. In elementary school, Zachary had a hard time making friends because his classmates thought lie was wild, overly excitable and lacking orderly continuity. “A lot of very successful people have ADHD, so wear it with pride. When I was 16, I realized that it was OK for me to be different than others. Now, at 27, I’m learning to understand my own feelings. I still struggle with ADHD, but I’ve learned that I’m responsible for more than just myself. I’ve learned how important it is to be organized and to be a step ahead. “
