二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Staying up late doing homework is always tiring. And perhaps when we become tired, we feel the need to eat unhealthy snack food. Recently scientists have been investigating tiredness and snack food.

According to a study in The Journal of Neuroscience, people are more likely to take snacks when they don't get enough sleep.

For the study, researchers from University of Cologne in Germany gave the same dinner to 32 healthy men aged between 19 and 33. Half of the men were then sent home to bed, and the other half were kept awake in the laboratory all night.

The next morning, the participants were asked to consider how much they would be willing to pay for snack food items shown to them in pictures.

According to the researchers, all were similarly hungry in the morning, and had similar levels of most hormones(荷尔蒙)and blood sugar.

However, brain scans showed that when the sleep-deprived(缺少睡眠的)participants looked at the pictures of junk food, they released more of the "hunger hormone". This is the hormone responsible for increasing the appetite, and making us consume more.

Asked about how much they would pay for snacks, "Participants with sleep deprivation were more willing to overspend on food items than those with a good night's sleep," researchers told Science Daily.

Researchers also observed that among the people who hadn't slept, there was greater activity in the part of the brain where food rewards are processed.

The scientists think that sleep-deprived people experience changes to the hunger hormone and the brain's reward system that then leads to a stronger desire to eat snacks with high fat and calories.

"This brings us a little closer to understanding the mechanism(机制)behind how sleep deprivation changes food valuation," Professor Jan Peters, a co-author of the study from the University of Cologne, told The Independent.

    Some tips on this:

    * Listen to some soft music to relieve your tiredness.

    * Do some slight exercise for a short time when you're tired.

    * Eat yogurt or fruits to replace snacks with high fat and calories.

    * Distance yourself from snacks.

A.Less sleep leads to more snacks.

B.Staying up late does harm to health.

C.Tiredness is the cause of less sleep.

D.We need no snacks when we sleep.

【2】What makes people eat more junk food according to the study?

    A.Blood sugar.

    B.Food items.

    C.The hunger hormone.

    D.Fat and calories.

A.People who lack sleep usually spend less on food items.

B.Listening to soft music helps people feel relaxed.

C.Exercise as much as you can when you are tired.

D.People who sleep well can get food rewards.

【4】What's the author's attitude towards snacks?

    A.Positive.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Negative.

    D.Neutral.

  • 22、Young children from poor families are more likely to consume junk food and fizzy drinks(汽水) than their richer companions. A study of 1,800 four- and five-year-olds found more than half of those from poor backgrounds drank at least one a week, compared to just four in ten oofy kids. They also drank less milk and consumed more fruit juice which is also linked to child obesity (肥胖) caused by high sugar intake(摄取量).

The phenomenon also relates to children who spend more than two hours a day in front of a TV or playing computer games—whatever their social circumstances. A companion study also found children from poor families were more likely to eat chips, sweets and chocolate. Professor Kate Storey said, “when you are looking at that age group, and such a large percentage of very young kids in the study are consuming a large amount of soda(苏打汽水),it is quite concerning.

The researchers carried out the study by surveying the parents of their participants to find out their dietary habits. Professor Storey said, “If you are drinking a lot of soda and fruit juice, they can displace(取代)consumption of water and milk, which are important not just for ending thirst, but for developing healthy bones and teeth, and health and wellness in general.”

Co-researcher Dr John Spence said, “Dietary behavior and intake patterns are influenced heavily by what happens in the first few years with children, and they maintain those patterns throughout childhood and into adolescence(青少年时期).” In addition to basic health education, this study identifies a need in how we are dealing with poverty and recognizing there is more to poverty than simply the number of dollars people have.

Professor Storey said that shows how education can make a difference and lead to healthier eating habits, regardless of what is happening at home. “Many families live in places that might not be very healthy for them and, as a result, they make unhealthy food choices. You can start making a difference in different places. It calls for action in multiple settings, schools and communities, for example. That light-bulb moment can happen in a variety of places,” Professor Storey added.

【1】What does the underlined word “oofy” mean in Para.1?

    A. Wealthy.  B. Healthy.    C. Fat    D. Weak.

【2】According to the passage, Professor Storey thinks it helpful for children ______.

    A. to drink more coffee  B. to drink more milk

    C. to drink more soda   D. to drink more fruit juice

【3】 According to Dr John Spence, children’s habits in the early stage of life can even affect _____.

    A. their attitude towards life

    B. their living patterns of youth

    C. health in their old age

    D. living quality of all their life

【4】Professor Storey considers that healthier eating habits can be _____.

    A. finally determined by parents’ life habits

    B. gently changed by parents’ life habits

    C. suddenly changed by family situation

    D. gradually changed by education

【5】What’s the main idea of the passage?

    A. Young people like eating junk food.

    B. Junk food is bad for both young children and adults.

    C. Children from poor families are more likely to eat junk food.

    D. Junk food causes more and more children to become overweight.

  • 23、   Fantasy as a genre is often unfairly wronged. While there are plenty of authors who seem to be paid by the word and are only concerned with expanding volume, there are many authors producing fantastic works that are worthy of the word literature. While there were many worthy competitors, here are what we consider to be the great work of the greatest fantasy series of all time.

    1. The Dark Tower by Stephen King

The Dark Tower actually shares some similarities with The Wheel of Time. In both series the first four books are the strongest, and you also get the sense with both Robert Jordan and Stephen King that they didn’t quite know how to end their creation, which led to a very controversial ending in The Dark Tower’s case along with some questionable decisions by King like his self-insertion in the story.

King has created one of the most iconic fantasy characters of all time in the Gunslinger Roland and the world he creates, with all of its similarities to our reality, is a prosperous one. It’s too bad that Stephen King doesn’t dabble(涉猎) more in fantasy, because he clearly has a talent for world building. Not to mention everything he writes seems to be phone book sized, which would fit right in with the fantasy genre.

    2. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

When considering a ranking of the greatest fantasy series of all time, the question of Harry Potter is a tricky one. There’s inevitably opposition when something is as popular as Rowling’s work, and add to that the fact that the series is seemingly meant for children and you have a case that naturally inspires a lot of debate. I’m not sure I believe Rowling did anything particularly new with Harry Potter, but a work doesn’t necessarily have to be innovative for it to be great. Nearly every fantasy series owes a debt to Tolkien for instance, but that doesn’t mean Tolkien has written the only work of fantasy that matters. Rowling didn’t really come up with anything new, but the connection she made with tens of millions of readers is praiseworthy. People will be reading Harry Potter for decades to come, and I’m not sure a better introduction to fantasy could be found.

1What do we know about the two books?

    A. King’s work The Wheel of Time has a controversial ending.

    B. People have debate on J.K. Rowling’s book because of her innovation.

    C. King is blessed with a gift for world building.

    D. Tolkien has a great influence on J.K. Rowling.

2The passage is most probably taken from ________.

    A. a news report B. a book review C. a history book D. a research paper

  • 24、Brandon Smith, in Houston, Texas, turned 12 on April 11. It is a tough time to have a birthday. But he still had a socially distanced birthday celebration that he will always remember.

Celebrations in the age of the coronavirus(冠状病毒) have forced people to get creative. Brandon’s father, Jody Smith, went on Twitter with a simple request. He posted a picture of Brandon on it.
