二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Tigers are faced with many threats, including poaching(偷猎), illegal trade and habitat loss to name a few. It’s little wonder that their population has declined from 100,000 a century ago to just 3,500 today.

But despite these challenges, Nepal’s wild tigers have successfully returned from the edge of extinction with a 190 per cent population increase since 2009. According to Nepal’s National Tiger and Prey Survey 2022, there are now 355 wild tigers in the country, compared to 121 in 2010. This amounts to a 190 per cent increase, meaning that the country nearly tripled its tiger population.

Ginette Hemley, Senior Vice President for wildlife conservation at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), said,“Tigers in Nepal and everywhere else that they live in Asia, about 10countries, were on a steady decline because of two key reasons. The most immediate reason was poaching for the illegal animal trade. The second reason was loss of habitat.”

To achieve this comeback in tiger numbers, Nepal laid ban on poaching, with anti-poaching groups patrolling protected areas. Another factor in the country’s success was the restoration of corridors to promote the safe passage and genetic distribution of tigers in protected areas.

Hemley said,“ Nepal really does stand out as a leader in conservation, especially for tigers. There is support for conservation of tigers at the highest level of government. That has translated into really effective habitat conservation, bolstering the protection of tigers in national parks, the wildlife reserves.” As well as government support, she pointed to community involvement in conservation projects as a reason for Nepal’s success. Hopefully, we will continue to see a recovery in the tiger population, as well as measures taken to protect local communities.

    A.It’s surprising.

    B.It’s puzzling.

    C.It’s expected.

【2】What do the figures in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.The success of tiger conservation.

B.Efforts made by a few Nepalese.

    C.The serious decrease of tigers.

    D.Challenges of protecting tigers.

【3】Which can best replace the underlined word “patrolling” in paragraph 4?

    A.guarding

    B.walking

    C.trapping

    D.judging

【4】What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A.The specific reasons for protecting tigers.

B.The government’s attitude to tiger conservation.

C.The author’s ambiguous attitude to tiger conservation.

D.The work local communities have done to protect tigers.

  • 22、One morning I noticed a woman sitting alone at the bus stop. She seemed not to go to work hurriedly. She wasn't going anywhere as well. Was she waiting for the bus? Did mall(商场)buses come this early when the stores wouldn't be open for hours? I felt puzzled. As I drove by, I heard a voice say, "Give her a bottle of water."

"She looks like she is sleeping. Why would I wake her? What is wrong with me? What is so hard about doing the right thing? It's just a bottle of water!"

So I drove by her again and again. Finally, I pulled my car into a parking zone, stepping out with a bottle of water in one hand and a twenty-dollar bill in the other. Each step seemed to fill me with purpose and focus. No words can describe what happened between us at that moment. I thought I was bringing her a cold drink, but instead I was bringing her a hope she needed. We sat together for a while as she talked. She had a sad story to tell, but she was no longer sad. Before we parted, I grabbed all the cash I had in my purse and found more water in my car along with some snacks. We stood at the bus stop hugging and said our goodbyes.

I still have a thousand questions as to why I struggled to act. Why did it take me many circles around the mall and an argument with myself? I was once torn between helping her and ignoring her. All I know for sure is that while walking toward that woman at the bus stop, a miracle happened.

There are opportunities for us to love every day. Maybe our doubts keep us from acting. Maybe we don't want to take the risk or be uncomfortable. That day, I learned how love answers when asked and how love both gives and receives.

【1】How did the author feel about the woman sitting alone in the beginning?

    A.Annoyed.

    B.Confused.

    C.Terrified.

    D.Amused.

【2】Why did the author drive by the woman over and over again?

    A.To observe the poor woman.

B.To search for a parking space.

C.To evaluate whether to help her.

D.To improve the terribly poor driving skills.

【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined word "torn" in paragraph 4?

    A.ready to accept

    B.unable to decide

    C.glad to receive

    D.illegal to choose

【4】What can we learn from the text?

A.The wealth of life is action.

    B.Love breaks down racial barriers.

    C.Actions speak louder than words.

D.The best act to love is taking action.

  • 23、   Many electronic parts are made of hard materials that break easily. That makes them tough to use in products that need to bend. Now, Sam Yoon and his team have developed a thin mesh (网状物) that can both bend and conduct electricity.

His team started out with something called acrylonitrile, a clear liquid often used to make thin plastic fibers. Yoon and his team mixed this material with another liquid, which acted as a solvent. A solvent is something that can make other substances into liquids. Then, they squeezed the mix through a very tiny pipe: As the mixture was sprayed through the air, the solvent evaporated(挥发)and the acrylonitrile molecules linked up to make long chains, creating a type of plastic known as PAN. The researchers continually squeezed the mixture through the pipe. A single long PAN fiber was created. The scientists moved the pipe back and forth as the PAN was squeezed out. It ended up creating a layer that looked something like a spider’s web.

PAN, like most plastics, doesn’t conduct electricity. So the team’s next step would normally be to add a coating of metal so that electricity could flow through it. But it could be tough sticking such coatings on PAN. So the researchers added an extra step. They sprayed a thin coating of an inert metal onto the PAN. Inert metals, like gold, typically don’t react with other materials. The researchers then added another layer of PAN fiber at the top of the first, web-like layer. They provide temporary support, helping the metal-sprayed base resist sinking during the next step.

The researchers connected the fiber-covered frame to a negatively changed electrode. Then they dipped the fiber-covered frame into a solution that included the liquid copper. The team turned on the electric current for about one minute to make it run through the solution. The copper in the solution was attached to all of the fibers. But it stuck only to those that wore a metal jacket. Besides adding a thin layer of copper that conducts electricity, this process helped bond the PAN strands together at places, where they touched each other, Yoon notes.

The researchers then attached all of the fibers to a thin, clear layer of plastic, which had sticky backing, like a Band-Aid. Finally, the team dipped all of these into a liquid that made any of the PAN fibers that lacked a copper jacket into liquids. Only those that can be used to conduct electricity were left. Because the fibers were very thin and widely separated, light waves easily travel through the mesh. The copper coating acted just like a wire, permitting electricity to flow freely across it.

1The team used another liquid in the process to  .

A.make acrylonitrile evaporate B.turn acrylonitrile into plastic fibers

C.make acrylonitrile conduct electricity D.conduct electricity instead of acrylonitrile

2What should the team do first when using PAN?

A.Make it easy to break. B.Make it react with other materials.

C.Make it conduct electricity. D.Find a way to make it into a liquid.

3What does the underlined word those in the last paragraph refer to?

A.The thin plastics. B.Just the copper coatings.

C.All the PAN fibers. D.All the copper-coated fibers.

  • 24、Most parents will tell you that travelling internationally with kids is no day at the beach.

“For families with young children, spending a long period of time in an airport terminal can be a kind of pain, partly because of all the waiting around but also because the airport is just a stop — usually the first stop — in a long journey,” said Suzanne Rowan Kelleher, a family travel expert and managing editor of MiniTime.cn.

But a new beach-themed play area for children in the international terminal at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) gives kids a chance to have some fun and burn off some of their energy before they get on a flight.

First opening on Thursday, in the new Tom Bradley International Terminal with a party featuring the LAX therapy dogs, some gift bags and cupcakes, the 971-square-foot, post-security play area is titled “LAX Beach.” Open to kids aged 2 to 8, the play space has soft, sculpted foam pieces that resemble waves, surfboards, beach toys and dolphins and is keeping in with the terminal’s overall architectural theme, which was inspired by the Pacific Ocean to the west of the airport.

“I think it is safe to say that happy children make better flights,” said Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey. “And with the opening of LAX Beach, we are going to see a lot more happy children on our international flights.”

There are likely going to be a lot more happy adults seated around those children on international flights as well with LAX Beach appearing in the international terminal.

The play space — the first children’s play area in any LAX terminal — was built for the Los Angeles World Airports by terminal management company Westfield for $350,000. In addition to the beach-themed foam pieces, there’s a slide, an interactive light table and lifesavers for children to crawl through.

The nearby seating overlooking the space offers a place for parents to relax and keep an eye on their kids.

“Having a kid-centric place where kids can work off a bit of energy can be a real lifesaver,” said Rowan Kelleher. “The beach theme attempts to offer a sense of place, too, which is nice.”

【1】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Most parents with their children around prefer to travel by air.

B.Children who play in LAX Beach always sleep in the plane.

C.Usually parents waiting in an airport with kids can’t feel relaxed.

D.Parents with kids can’t enjoy the time on the beach any more.

【2】What do you know about LAX Beach?

A.It opens to people just on every Thursday.

B.It’s designed with some oceanic features.

C.Dogs are intended to play with the kids there.

D.Adults are not allowed to get into it but parents.

【3】We can infer from the passage that LAX ________.

A.will build more similar theme beaches.

    B.expects to attract more passengers.

C.will open to people living in the city.

D.does a favor to parents with kids there.

【4】Why did the airport design and construct a beach-themed play space?

A.To help parents with kid have enjoyable flights.

B.To help make children more energetic.

C.To offer little kids a place to rest well.

D.To offers parents a place to play with kids.

【5】What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.LAX Beach changed the style of Los Angeles airport.

B.Los Angeles airport gets beach-themed kids’ play area.

C.Los Angeles airport will provide LAX Beach for kids for free.

D.LAX Beach is the most popular place for kids in Los Angeles.
