二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A housing block in Wales has been fitted with a world-first solar system that connects all the flats to the same rooftop panels. The residents of Odet Court in Cardiff are set to save 50 percent off their energy bills thanks to the new technology, which can meet up to 75 percent of each flat’s electricity demand.

Australian manufacturer Allume Energy claims that its SolShare model is the only technology that enables solar energy from a single rooftop system to be shared by multiple homes in the same building.

The Welsh government funded the pioneering project with social housing landlord Wales & West Housing, as part of a nationwide retrofitting (改装) programme. And housing blocks across Europe could soon benefit from the eco-innovation. Allume Energy points out that 300 million Europeans live in low-and medium-rise apartment buildings with roof space for solar panels.

People’s appetite for solar panels is increasing greatly. Around 1.2 million UK homes have them installed, according to the latest MCS standards agency figures. But more is needed to speed up the solar roll-out, and make the green energy source accessible for everyone. Allume Energy General Manager for Europe Jack Taylor says he hopes the Welsh project will serve as a template for governments and social housing providers in the UK to upgrade multi-unit residences.

As well as saving money on hardware, the company says that SolShare has boosted solar use by more than 25 percent. The new system is suitable for retrofit projects as well as new buildings, as it does not require any changes to existing supply and metering infrastructure.

Based on the average use of 18, 000 kW·h to 2, 400 kW·h for a one-bed flat, Allume Energy estimates that this translates to an electricity bill saving of around 50 percent. Given current average electricity costs in the UK of 34 P/kW·h, that means each flat are likely to save between £390 to £530 a year, which is a significant amount off in a cost of living crisis.

【1】What is special about the rooftop solar system in Wales?

A.It is the world’s first solar system.

B.It is shared by all the flats in a building.

C.It is fitted on the roofs of separate flats.

D.It cuts the users’ electricity costs by 75%.

【2】Who could benefit first from the project funded by the Welsh government?

A.People living in flats with roof space for solar panels.

B.Rural residents eager for green energy.

    C.Villagers often experiencing power failure.

D.Rich people with their own separate houses.

【3】What does the underlined word “template” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Change.

    B.Goal.

    C.Model.

    D.Warning.

【4】In what aspect does the solar system benefit its users?

    A.Less power failure.

    B.Lower electricity bills.

    C.Reduced-price electricity.

    D.Less demand for electricity.

  • 22、   The secret to living longer could be as simple as picking up your walking pace, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Sydney found that walking at a brisk(快的) or fast pace was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent for any cause of death.

This effect was even more obvious in older age group, with fast walkers over the age of 60 reducing their risk of death by a surprising 53 percent. Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, who led the study, explained, “A fast pace is generally five to six kilometers per hour, but it really depends on a walker’s fitness levels; an alternatives indicator is to walk at a pace that makes you slightly out of breath or sweaty.”

In the study, the researchers looked at the results of 11 surveys from 1994 to 2008, in which participants recorded their walking pace, as well as age, sex and BMI. The analysis showed that walking at an average pace was associated with a 20 percent risk reduction for all-cause mortality(死亡率) compared with walking at a slow pace, while walking at a brisk or fast pace was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent.

The researchers hope the findings will encourage the development of public health message about the benefits of walking pace. Professor Stamatakis added, “These analyses suggest that increasing walking pace may be a straightforward way for people to improve heart health and risk for premature mortality--- providing a simple message for public health campaigns to promote.

“Especially in situations when walking more isn’t possible due to time pressures or a less walking-friendly environment, walking faster may be a good option to get the heart rate up--- one that most people can easily add to their lives.”

1Who benefit most from walking fast?

    A. Cancer sufferers. B. The elderly.

    C. Those who have heart problems. D. Those who have high BMI.

2What decides how fast a person can walk according to Professor Stamatakis?

    A. His/Her fitness levels. B. His/Her ages.

    C. His/Her will. D. His/Her BMI.

3Why can walking fast reduce death rate?

    A. Most people like doing it. B. It benefits the heart.

    C. It reduces cancer mortality. D. Most people can do it easily.

4What is the main idea of the text?

    A. Walking is easy exercise for people to do.

    B. Walking has received little attention until now.

    C. More and more people are walking fast for health.

    D. A fast walking pace can benefit people’s health.

  • 23、In this day and age, digital devices (数码产品) have become a significant part of our daily lives. 【1】

But while these devices do make people’s lives easier, there are things to look out for in using these technologies. One is how digital devices seem to be taking over people’s social relationships.

You might have noticed how everyone is engaged in their devices during family gatherings or get-togethers with friends. While they were constantly clicking on their portable devices, real conversations are becoming rare. 【2】

So if you want to spend quality time with each other, you and your friends and family need to sacrifice screen time.

【3】 When you’re hanging out with your friends, make it a policy that all devices should be turned off. Of course, everyone should agree on this ahead of time to avoid any misunderstanding. 【4】 This could also be a house rule when you have dinner with your family or during any other event with relatives.

Another option could be to turn devices on silent mode (模式), just in case someone is expecting an urgent call or important text. It sounds simple, but turning our eyes away from the screen may be more difficult than you think. 【5】 And while we may be able to carry on a conversation while playing a game, this is definitely going to cause a loss to the quality of the time we spend with others.

By removing digital devices in the background, you and your friends can concentrate on what’s really important—spending time with each other.

A.Turning off your digital devices is a good first step.

B.They’re also driving us away from people around us.

C.People can therefore concentrate on what they are doing.

D.Thus, the opportunity to strengthen connections might be disappearing.

E.It seems so natural to reach for your phone or device before doing anything.

F.They are used for a variety of tasks, whether it’s ordering food or booking a flight.

G.And everyone must be willing to obey the rule or else the purpose would be defeated.

  • 24、Today, many species of animals and plants are endangered. This means they are in danger of becoming extinct and living on only in the pages of history books. The famous dodo is a classic example of a creature that became extinct. A flightless bird that lived on the island of Mauritius, it was discovered by sailors in 1598 but was hunted to extinction by 1681.

Hunting has caused the Bengal tiger and the African elephant to be endangered today but habitat destruction can also lead to extinction. This is equally true for plants. Animals and plants disappear for other reasons too, but the main cause is often a disruption(打乱,破坏) in the natural food chain, whether due to hunting, habitat destruction, or even the introduction of alien species.

The natural food chain is the cycle that governs the existence of all life on this planet. It is a carefully balanced cycle and any imbalance that occurs can cause knock-on effects that have serious consequences. At the beginning of the natural food chain are plants which turn sunlight into energy and draw nutrients from the earth. Plants are called producers.

After the producers come the consumers. There are three tiers of consumers. First are creatures such as plant-eating animals, fish and insects which feed off the producers. These animals that only eat plants are called herbivores. The second tier of consumers are carnivores - animals that live off other animals. The third tier of consumers eats both other animals and plants. These consumers, including most humans, are called omnivores.

After animals and plants die, they become food for other smaller creatures, such as bacteria and some plants, such as fungi. As they feed, these creatures turn the dead bodies back into gases and minerals which are again food for the producers at the beginning of the food chain. And so the cycle continues.

All of nature is connected and governed by hundreds of these delicate food chains and if a single plant in the chain cannot survive, then the insects that live off the plant start to die and the animals that eat the insects also start to die.

When a food chain is disrupted, the consequences can be extremely serious. One estimate suggests that for each plant species that is lost, up to 30 animals and insects may also die out. One wonders how many species were affected by the extinction of the dodo?

Humans can have disastrous effects on food chains. We've already mentioned hunting but now let's look at travel. When people first started to explore the world they took plant and animal species from their home countries and introduced them wherever they went. They didn't realize that by introducing alien species they were disrupting the natural food chains of the areas they discovered. Although there are strict rules in place today controlling the import and export of alien species, some places are still fighting the effects of aliens introduced hundreds of years ago.

For example, Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean is a breeding ground for albatrosses that have been nesting there for centuries. But in the 19th century, mice from passing ships were brought to the island. Being a species alien to the island, they had no natural predators and have now grown to such a size that they are attacking and killing albatross chicks. If they are allowed to continue, they will wipe out the albatross population.

With import laws and people's rising awareness of how humans affect the natural environment, hopefully we can learn to fit better into the natural food chains that govern our world. Otherwise we need to accept that the loss of any more plants and animals could eventually mean our own extinction.

【1What do the first two paragraphs mainly tell us?

    A. Hunting and habitat destruction lead to extinction.

    B. Plants, herbivores and carnivores are the three tiers of consumers.

    C. If a bird becomes extinct, the relevant food chain will be disrupted.

    D. Animals and plants become extinct because alien species are imported.

【3】By mentioning the mice in Gough Island, the author intends to highlight ______.

    A. mice worldwide are growing all the time

    B. being aliens, they had no natural predators

    C. some places are still fighting the effects of aliens

    D. traveling can have disastrous effects on food chains

【4】What is the best title of the passage?

    A. Survival of the fittest.
