27、Jo Cameron, a 71-year-old Scottish woman, has never needed to take painkillers after seeing the dentist and can eat spicy chilies without any discomfort.
She thought little of it until she sought treatment for an ankle problem at the age of 65. Doctors were astonished to find that she experienced no pain despite severe worsening in her ankle. A year later, she said she felt no pain after experiencing what's typically a very painful operation on her hand for osteoarthritis(关节炎). She doesn’t take any medication and is fit and active, with no medical conditions apart from arthritis.
Her doctors decided to analyze whether her lack of pain sensitivity was due to genetics and found it was caused by a mutation(突变) in a previously unidentified gene. Researchers found Cameron had two obvious mutations in her genetic makeup, one in the FAAH gene and the other in what the scientists dubbed (复制) FAAH-OUT, which has been little studied by scientists.
In a case study published Thursday, researchers explained the discovery could help guide new treatments for a range of conditions, from post-operative pain to anxiety. The study said that Cameron's mother and daughter appeared to perceive pain normally. However, her late father had little need for painkillers, and her son reported having some degree of pain insensitivity, but not to the same extent as her.
“Now that we are uncovering how this newly identified gene works, we hope to make further progress on new treatment targets,” Cox said. “We need to learn from people who are suffering from pain but also those who are less sensitive to pain,” said Keogh, who is also the director at the university's center for pain research.
“The implications of these findings are of great value,” said Dr. Devjit Srivastava, who diagnosed Cameron. “One out of two patients after surgery today still experiences severe pain, despite all advances in painkiller medications,” he added. “The findings point towards a novel painkiller discovery that could potentially offer post-surgical pain relief and also accelerate wound healing. We hope this could help the 330 million patients who have surgery globally every year.”
【1】How did Cameron find she was lack of pain sensitivity?
A.By seeing a dentist
B.By eating chilies
C.By taking painkillers
D.By seeking treatment
【2】What does the underlined word “perceive” mean?
A.understand
B.know
C.feel
D.see
【3】What can we conclude from what Keogh said?
A.More than one person is less sensitive to pain.
B.They have made great progress in this gene.
C.Their study merely focuses on the treatment targets.
D.They are uncovering the secrets of mutation.
【4】From the view point of Dr. Devjit Srivastava, we can know _______ .
A.The findings have discovered a new painkiller.
B.Patients who have operations no longer suffer pain.
C.The findings may be important to discover a new way to relieve pain.
D.Most patients after surgery today still suffer great pain.
28、 You are standing in a hall packed with friends, family, colleagues and peers. You are about to walk onto the stage and address theme. You’re expected to say something meaningful and profound and everyone is hanging on your every word. You need to be clearly spoken, confident and calm, maybe even funny. How do you feel?
If you’re shaking, sweating and looking for the exit, you’re normal. Most of us are scared of public speaking and yet, as a society, we’re becoming more obsessed with hearing what people have to say: we watch endless TED talks, download podcasts and screen hours of YouTube clips. Being able to address a crowd is no longer the domain of the brave—if you want to get ahead in your career, you need to master it. I’ve done enough public speaking to have picked up some tips and tricks, and these are the ones I rely on most.
The most important thing is to prepare. You don’t have to write out your speech word by word but get the headline, three key points and the concluding sentence on paper and put bullet points under each. Then run through it and note which of your bullet points made it in and what you added. Adapt your notes and try again. Keep going until you have a structure.
Now it’s time to watch yourself—yes, get out your camera and film yourself. This is how you will see the points that need work and where you can polish it up.
Most of the information the audience will take away will be from your energy and your tone, a little from your words. Once you have sorted out the words, focus on how to exude(散发) the right energy—do you need confidence or humor? I go for confidence so, five minutes before a talk, I try to recall a success I’ve had. I focus on the details and aim to bring that feelings of competence to life.
Finally, breathe. We cannot speak without breath, yet it is the first thing we let go of when we are nervous. Settle your breathing before you start. If you lose control of your breath in the middle, say “Let’s take a moment to think about that last point.” That gives you a pause to collect your breath. The only way to get over a fear of public speaking is to do it, again and again. You will have good and bad experiences but, if you do it enough, you’ll realize that, occasionally, it’s fun.
【1】According to the author, why is public speech important to the average?
A.Friendships can be established through it.
B.Public speeches can display our courage.
C.There are more occasions for pubic speeches.
D.It is beneficial to our way up the career ladder.
【2】Which of the following tips is recommended by the author?
A.Preparing and writing down every detail.
B.Displaying right energy during the speech.
C.Watching famous films of public speeches.
D.Telling key points and bullet points apart.
【3】What view does the author hold about public speaking?
A.It creates more and more fun if we stick to practice.
B.It is easier to practise at home than to perform outside.
C.Experiences of public speaking can delight us sometimes.
D.Attempts to give public speaking tend to fail in the end.
29、 The Renaissance marks a period of human awakening. In this article we are going to explore the inventions during this period which have helped change the life and progress of mankind.
Clock
The first mechanical clock was invented in the early 1300’s. Galileo, an Italian scientist, discovered the pendulum (钟摆) around 1602. The pendulum greatly improved the movement of the hands of a clock. The average error with the pendulum varied only by seconds each day. Before this the error was from 10 to 15 minutes a day.
Eyeglasses
In the late thirteenth century, paintings first appeared with people wearing or holding eyeglasses. From these paintings, we know that eyeglasses were invented in Italy. Around 1300 the Venetian Glassmaker’s Guild made it illegal for cheap glasses to be made. By 1352, eyeglasses were only worn by well-educated rich men. In 1456, the invention of the printing press allowed books to become widespread. Once people owned books, reading glasses began to be seen in the hands of common people. In 1623, the Spanish invented the first graded eyeglasses.
Flush toilet (抽水马桶)
Sir John Harrington, godson to Queen Elizabeth, made the first flush toilet for himself and his godmother in 1596. He was teased by his friends and never made another one.
In 1775, Alexander Cummings reinvented the flush toilet more commonly called the water closet. Two years later in 1777, Samuel Prosser applied for and received a patent for it.
Wallpaper
In 1496, the first paper factory came into operation in England. English artists soon make wallpaper for decoration. For the next 200 years England was a large producer of wallpaper for Europe. Before wallpaper was invented, only wealthy people could afford to decorate the walls of their houses.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 【1】 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.
Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 【2】.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 【3】 supporting.
The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 【4】 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 【5】.
If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 【6】 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 【7】 of all resources.
And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 【8】 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 【9】 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 【10】 human being.

THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
In Congress, July 4, 1776
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d【1】 the causes which impel them to the separation.

And when it went under the【3】 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an【4】 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.
From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?
The answer is yes. The first artwork【5】 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its【6】 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.
Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.
Art is a way in which human 【7】 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 【8】 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain【9】 traits of old master paintings be called art?
For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as【10】. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.
Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.
It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

40、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was Saturday afternoon. Martin and his sister Pam were looking at the beautiful old buildings of Cambridge for the day. Pam had a camera with her. She likes taking photos.
“Let’s have a last photo of you,” said Pam. “It’s the last one. I want to finish the film in my camera.”
“Oh, all right,” said Martin. He stood in front of the flowers.
“Look at me.” Said Pam and took a photo. A man with a big rucksack(背包) and a tent on his back walked between Pam and Martin.
“Oh no,” said Pam. “Now I’ve got a picture of that man, not of you, Martin.”
The man looked at Pam. He was angry. He went across the road without a word.
“That man isn’t very nice, is he?” said Martin.
“No,” said Pam. The man with the rucksack on his back went into the bus station. He had got sunglasses and a blue hat.
“Come on,” said Martin. “Let’s find our bus.”
They went into the bus station. “Look,” said Martin. “There’s that man again. He’s getting into that bus. He’s going to Aberdeen. That’s in Scotland.”
“Good,” said Pam. “Far from here and far from me!”
Three days later, Pam had got her photos from the shop. “Look at these photos of us in Cambridge,” she said to Martin. “They are all very good but this last one. Look, it’s that man with the rucksack.”
“Wait a minute,” said Martin. “I know that face. It’s in the newspaper. Have you got it?”
“Today’s newspaper?” said Pam. “Yes, it’s here. Why?”
“Yes, here he is. Look at this picture,” said Martin.
Pam looked at the picture in the newspaper. “Who’s that?” she asked.
“It says in the paper that his name is Alan Rook,” said Martin. “And he works in a bank in London. But on Monday morning - no Alan Rook! The people at the bank don’t know where he is. And they say he’s got a hundred thousand pounds with him. The police are looking for him, too.”
“Come on,” said Martin. “Let’s take the photo and the newspaper to the police.”
