  • 22、How Should School Education Be Reformed?

The state of public school facilities in the United States is a matter of great concern to educators and administrators. While the mission of public schools has expanded beyond education to include social support and extra-curricular activities, the academic schedule has changed little in more than a century. A report on time and learning released today by the state education committee says saving school time for academic teaching and moving away from the time-limited tradition of education are crucial steps in the school reform process.

The committee’s report, entitled Time Prisoner, described fixed clocks and calendars in American education as a fundamental design problem that urgently needs to be changed. “Time should serve children instead of children serving time.” the report says. The two-year committee found that holding American students to world-class standards will require more time for classroom instruction. “We have been asking the impossible of our students that they learn as much as their foreign peers while spending half as much as in core academic subjects.” it states.

The committee compared the relationship between time and learning in Japan, Germany and the United States and found that American students received less than half of the basic academic education received by Japanese and German students. On average, American students can earn a high school diploma if they spend only 41 percent of their school time on academics, says the report. American students spend an average of three hours a day on core academics such as English, math, science, and history, the committee found. Their report recommends offering a minimum of 5.5 hours of academics every school day.

The nine-member committee also recommended extending the daily school hours beyond the traditional six hours. “If schools want to continue offering important activities outside the academic core, as well as serving as a center for family and community services, they should keep school doors open longer each day and each year.” says John Hodge Jones, education official of schools in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and chairman of the committee. The typical school year in American public schools is 180 days. Eleven states allow school years of 175 days or less, and only one state requires more than 180 days.

“For over a decade, education reformers have been working excitedly to improve our schools,” says Milton Goldberg, executive director of the committee. “But... if reform is to truly take hold, the six-hour, 180-day school year should go into museums — an exhibit from our education past.”

1Compared with the academic courses more than a hundred years ago, the academic courses now ___________.

    A.include some extra-curricular activities

B.remain much of what they used to be

C.demand students’ more contribution of time

D.focus more on education of social support

2The researches by the committee mentioned in the passage are most concerned about __________.

    A.the fashion of education management

    B.the elements of school education

C.the changes in education in the recent century

D.the time devoted to academic learning

3As it is mentioned in the passage, schools in the U.S.A do the following except __________.

    A.provide important outside-academic activities

B.have competition with schools of other countries

C.arrange six-hour teaching and learning every day

D.serve social units such as family and community

4Executive director of the committee Milton Goldberg would most probably disagree that ___________.

A.the time of school day and school year should be reduced

B.what the education reformers have done is not good enough

C.visiting museums can improve students’ academic learning ability

D.social support and extra-curricular activities should be cancelled

  • 23、The skies over Latin America’s largest city are set to witness a futuristic aerospace revolution after the Brazilian airline Gol reached an agreement that could see it transport regular passengers around São Paulo in hundreds of low-cost zero-emission electric air taxis.

Dómhnal Slattery, chief executive of the Dublin-based firm Avolon, which will provide the aircraft to Gol and recently placed an order for 500 of the aircraft from their British manufacturer, admitted helicopters were the “kingdom of the wealthiest”.

But the Avolon boss claimed the introduction of VA-X4 eVTOLs (electric vertical(垂直的) takeoff and landing) aircraft to São Paulo would be a gamechanger for regular passengers once the taxis, which look like a futuristic cross between a helicopter and a glider, were delivered in late 2024 or 2025.

“Our basic estimate (估计) at the moment is that the operating cost here for this aircraft will be equal to $1 per passenger over a 25-mile trip,” Slattery told the Financial Times. “Which is almost equal to an Uber ride.”

Few cities are crying out for such a revolution more than São Paulo, a sprawling metropolis with more than 12 million citizens and choked by a fleet of 8.6m vehicles.

In the late 1990s, the congestion (拥塞) became so bad in what is now the world’s fifth biggest city after Tokyo, Delhi, Seoul and Shanghai that authorities were forced to introduce a number plate rotation (循环) system for vehicles.

Stephen Fitzpatrick, the head of the British aerospace manufacturer that produces the aircraft, Vertical Aerospace, said the flying taxis would be ideal for Brazil’s biggest city and will “transform how we travel around high population density cities that are crowded with traffic”.

The Bristol-based Vertical Aerospace was founded in 2016 and promises to pioneer “a new era in vertical transport”.

“We’ll be looking to Asia after São Paulo,” Avolon’s chief commercial officer, Paul Geaney, told Reuters.

【1】What did Dómhnal Slattery think of helicopters?

A.They could be afforded by all.

B.They could be mostly used by the rich.

    C.They provided convenience for travellers.

D.They showed the owners’ social status.

【2】What is the advantage of electric air taxis?

    A.Eco-friendliness.

    B.Traditional design.

    C.Zero noise.

    D.Free delivery.

【3】Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.The flying taxis will be ideal for Brazil’s biggest city.

B.More cities are eager for electric air taxis than São Paulo.

C.The Avolon will enter the Asian transportation market soon.

D.Travelling by VA-X4 eVTOLs can be more convenient but more expensive than by Uber.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.Uber Ride—a futuristic aerospace revolution

B.Advanced vertical aircrafts ordered by the Avolon Company

C.VA-X4 eVTOLs—a lifesaver for high population density cities

D.Electric air taxis to make their first appearance in Brazil’s most congested city

  • 24、“You get excited about everything because you were born in the summer!” Does that sound like something your grandparents used to say to you?

Of course, you’re a learned person who doesn’t believe in such things. But scientists now say that it might not all be superstition (迷信).

Researchers from Semmelweis University in Hungary recently asked 366 university students to fill out a questionnaire. The answers given included things like “My mood often changes for no reason”, “I love to deal with new projects, even if they’re risky ”, and “I complain a lot”. They then compared students’ answers to their birthdays. They found that the season of your birth may have some effect on who you are.

Researchers found that people born in the summer were more likely to quickly change between sad and happy emotions. People born in the winter, however, were less likely to become angry. Spring birthdays were more likely to make people overly positive, while people born in autumn were less likely to be depressive (忧郁的).

So, why could the seasons cause such differences?

“Biochemical studies have shown that the season in which you are born affects some monoamine neurotransmitters (单胺类神经递质),” lead researcher Xenia Gonda said in a written statement. “This led us to believe that birth season may have a longer-lasting effect.”

Monoamine neurotransmitters are given off from neurones (神经元细胞). They affect our emotions. So the researchers believe they might have an effect on the development of our personalities.

Different seasons also have different food and nutrients (养分) to offer. In addition, mothers usually get more physical exercise and enjoy more sunlight in warm seasons than in cold seasons. All these are “environmental factors ” which may influence a person’s personality, said Gonda.

But the research only included a survey and didn’t follow participants over time. More research is needed before a final answer can be given on the connection between season and personality.

Don’t worry, though. Even if the connection is proven, it won’t mean that your birth month completely decides who you are. Being happy or sad is up to you.

1The study from Semmelweis University in Hungary intended to prove that _________________.

    A. a person’s birth season might affect their monoamine neurotransmitters

    B. monoamine neurotransmitters might be connected to our emotions

    C. people’s personalities might depend on environmental factors

    D. the season of a person’s birthday may affect their personality

2According to the research, people with emotional instability are more likely to be born in    .

    A. spring B. summer

    C. autumn D. winter

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. The season of your birth decides who you are.

    B. Physical exercise can change your personality.

    C. You can change your personality regardless of your birth season.

    D. A lot of research has been done on how someones birth season affects their
