21、 John James Audubon was curious about some birds he saw near his Mill Grove home in the early 1800s. He caught a few of them, tied a thin silver string to their legs, and released them. The next year, the birds returned. Audubon realized that his feathered neighbors returned to the same nesting spot each year.
People had tried attaching bands to birds' legs before Audubon's experiment. More than 2,000 years ago, Rome officers sent messages attached to birds to keep their armies informed. Audubon's experiment, however, is the first example of banding used to learn more about the movements of the wild birds in North America.
Today, only trained scientists are permitted to band birds. An organization known as the Bird Banding Laboratory(BBL)supplies official aluminum bands. Each band is stamped with a unique identification number. Researchers collect information about banded bird's species, weight, sex, age, wingspan and general health. That information is shared with the BBL.
Modern technology has taken bird banding to a new level. Today, transmitters(发射器)that come in all kinds of sizes are used. They can be attached to the leg, the neck, the back, or even a bird's feathers.
Researchers can learn many things from a banded bird, such as patterns in nesting, feeding and migration. Banded information also gives researchers a sense of the general health of a group of birds. And information about the general health of birds helps scientists understand the general health of the environment, which is good for humans too.

22、In Los Angeles, drivers spend sixty-one hours every year stuck in traffic. These drivers know all too well how bad the traffic can be. “There're too many cars, and you can't move around a lot.”
Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams. He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles. He is always late even with the help of a navigation (导航) system.
He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that. He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house. “What’s unique is that we use a lot of data that’s currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what's going to happen in front of you when you leave home.”
Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just respond to current traffic conditions. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give the fastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahabi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.
“I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this. ”
Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple.

23、 My brother and I were like most people, I imagine, who find themselves trying to do the right things for a parent suffering from the symptoms of dementia (痴呆). Though there was useful advice available from various online sources, nothing prepared us for the reality or the effects the symptoms had upon Mum's loving, kind, caring nature.
The greatest shock for me was seeing Mum being violent and aggressive with a carer. At times the aggression was directed at me too and I never really knew what to expect as Mum could go from being a loving Mother to this violent stranger in a flash. It was as though Mum had been possessed at times and all I could do was to constantly attempt to distract her from her fears at any moment.
One of the many challenging aspects of the dementia symptoms is that the sufferer often doesn't know that they're ill. In Mum's case, the main thing was to carry on as though everything was just as it always was. Many were the nights where she'd be convinced that friends and relatives were coming round for a party and she'd rush around setting the table, preparing snacks and getting everything ready until she was exhausted. I got to see first hand just how the anxieties that came with the illness would really stay with her until she fell asleep.
Mum longed for reminders of her early life in Liverpool and once travelling there had become too difficult, we found great comfort in local history books and a DVD about many of the places and landmarks Mum remembered from her childhood.
I learned to go with whatever experience Mum was having. I would always be with her. If I could pass on any guidance for those about to care for a loved one, it is the above I found that really helps.
【1】How was the writer when her mother suffered dementia?

A.Her mother's longing for her childhood photos.
B.The sudden distinct shift in her mother's temper.
C.Her mother's sufferings from fear and anxiety.
D.Her mother's failing to deal with daily chores.
【3】Why does the author tell the story of Mum's preparing for a party?
A.To prove her mum is not aware of her illness at all.
B.To explain how to help her mum come over her anxiety.
C.To regret that she failed to help her mum with her problem.
D.To look for a better medical treatment for her mum.
【4】What may the author suggest to those who have a parent with dementia?
A.Hard work pays off. B.Where there is a will, there is a way.
C.Company is the best medicine. D.Look before you leap.
24、I kept it in a special box and pulled it out when my brother was to arrive with his wife for New Year. I carried it to the dining room and unfolded the white tablecloth. Its colorful embroidery (刺绣) popped to life. The signatures of all the family and friends who’d ever shared a New Year meal at our table were hand-embroidered on top.
I’d started my embroidery New Year tradition 20 years before, since I wanted something that was uniquely ours — something we could look forward to.
The first time I laid out the clean white cloth and asked the kids to sign it, my family looked at me as if I were crazy. Write on the tablecloth we hoped to protect from jam and tea? Yes! And these days, I have grandkids to carry on the tradition. Each year I used a different color embroidery thread, so we could relive the highlights of particular gatherings. I saw my grandkids’ signatures go from scribbles (潦草的字) to print. We added drawings for milestones, such as a baby’s handprint.
The doorbell rang, and I ran to let in my brother, Tom, and his wife. They’d traveled from North Carolina for their first New Year with us. After greetings and hugs, I led them into the dining room. Tom looked wide-eyed at the tablecloth he had seen only in pictures. He gently touched our mom’s signature, and I put my hand on his, “I’m thankful to have started this while she was alive.”
More than something to look forward to, our tradition holds memories to look back on. Everyone we love is at our table when we sit down for New Year.

A.On her brother’s visit.
B.In New Year celebrations.
