21、Affectionately known as Temple Town, Siem Reap (暹粒) in Cambodia has been rapidly developing over recent years to cater to tourists that stream through to witness the wonders of the Angkor Archaeological Park. Aside from these awe-inspiring ancient structures, there are plenty of other things to see and do, as well as countless places to eat and drink, and make the most of your nights out. Most people enjoy a night on the tiles of Siem Reap without incident, but street theft and cheats can never be completely discounted in any major tourist destinations in the region. Pick pocketing and bag theft are the most common incidents, but can easily be avoided by simple use of common sense. Be aware that locals are very proud people, and displays of anger or rudeness from a foreigner are never well received. You can guarantee yourself a great night by being cool and smart by following some basic rules:
※ Don’t carry more money than you need: there are plenty of ATMs across town, and most Siem Reap establishments are relatively accessible.
※ Try to keep to main roads and avoid walking alone, especially if you are lost.
※ Keep wallets, handbags, mobile phones and cameras close to you, and don’t leave your belongings unattended anywhere: reducing the opportunities for theft is the best way to reduce the likelihood of it happening.
※ Be careful (ladies especially) on motors or tuk-tuks not to leave bags hanging loosely over your shoulder. Keep them out of reach of passers-by — the same goes for cameras too.
※ If you hire a motorbike, try to buy your own padlock and never leave it unlocked, unless it’s in a ticketed parking place.
※ Be polite and friendly with local people, whatever the situation.
※ Negotiate your fare to avoid problems later.

22、Until 1964 most forms of gambling were illegal in the United States. Since then, however, more and more stales have legalized gambling in order to raise income. The U. S. gambling industry has gone from an attitude of “prohibition” to one of “promotion”, as all but five states have now legalized gambling as a solution to their depressed economies.
Most states in the United States now depend on incomes from state lotteries (博彩) and use them for good causes, such as improving public education, maintaining slate parks, and developing environmental programs.
State governments maintain that the voluntary contribution of funds through state lotteries is preferable to increase state sales or income taxes, and the residents of states using the lottery system tend to support this. The gaming industry has also benefited some of the nation’s poorest citizens: Native Americans. The U. S. government ruled in 1988 that slates could not tax the revenues earned by gambling on Native American reservations. Having taken advantage of this ruling an open cosmos (赌场) on their reservations, many Native Americans moved from a life of poverty to a life of wealth.
Although there are many advantages to legalized gambling, there has also been a good deal of criticism of state-supported gambling. As states increase their support of state lotteries, they seem to encourage commercial gambling in all its forms. About 50 percent of the U. S. population plays the lottery, according to a study by the University of Chicago. This trend has led to an increase in habitual gambling. More than 5 million Americans suffer from gambling addiction. Those most at risk of becoming addicted include the poor, young people between twelve and eighteen years old, and women over the age of fifty, who are looking for some entertainment. As a result, many of them will end up in prison or even homeless. The promise of winning big fortune has created big problems.
Perhaps the most important concern is the moral issue of legalized gambling. The lottery is the only form of gambling that is essentially a government control. Critics ask whether gambling is a proper function of government. Should the government be the spokesman for the expansion of gambling? Critics say state advertising of lotto emphasizes luck over hard work, instant happiness over careful planning and entertainment over savings. The traditional work ethic (道德准则) is being devalued by the pipedream of striking it rich, and this is sending confusing messages to young people.
In 1996, Congress created a commission to conduct a legal study of the social and economic impacts of gambling in the United States. After two years of study, the Commission recommended an end to the expansion of legalized gambling and a ban on Internet gambling. Some feel this will severely hurt the gambling industry. Others fear that it is not enough and are asking the government to take a tough stand against gambling.

24、Many retirees spend time playing games like crossword puzzles, and social games like chess. These games keep people thinking and give their brains a good workout. But can they really help improve memory?
The idea of using games that are specifically designed to brain training is very complicated, but research published in The Cambridge University Press has found that brain games certainly make people think and use acquired skills.
Brain games sharpen certain thinking skills like short-term memory decision making, planning skills, and reaction time according to Dr. Julie Brody-Magid, clinical director of the Memory Disorders Assessment Clinic at Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital. Many of these skills decrease as people age, especially after retirement,
“Learning to use your brain in response to other forms of stimulation can help strengthen valuable mental skills, which older people continue to need and rely on every day,” Brody-Magid said. The best way to build up cognitive (认知的) reserve is to stay physically active, especially when you age, by taking care of your health by eating right and managing chronic diseases like high blood pressure, and diabetes. All of these go hand-in-hand with playing brain games.“In this way, participating in brain games actually can help with cognition, but it’s a team effort,” said Brody-Magid. “You can’t do it by doing crossword puzzles alone.”
So, if you want to mix it up and combine different types of brain boosting games, here’s a selection from Very Well Mind. Sudoku, a number placement game, relies on short-term memory and concentration. Crossword puzzles are the classic brain game that revolves around long-term memory and knowledge. You can also find them in newspapers and books. If you prefer online games, you can check out Braingle, a free site that has over 15,000 puzzles, riddles, and more. You can even create your own puzzles to get your creative juices flowing too.
So, play some brain games to exercise your brain cells and harvest all of the benefits.
【1】What is the purpose of the games in paragraph 2?
A.To train brain.
B.To improve creativity.

A.By only staying physically active.
B.By exercising their brain frequently.
C.By participating in more team work.
D.By stimulating their cognitive ability.
【3】What does the author suggest doing to improve your creative ability?
A.Relying on Sudoku.
B.Doing crossword puzzles.
