21、Digital life reaches far beyond our screens into the real world. That means we must figure out how to live with the impact of technology in our backyards.
It isn’t always easy. Some residents of towns near e-commerce processing centers complain about traffic, pollution and safety risks from delivery vehicles. Communities where water is in short supply are worried about the needs of internet computer centers that use water to keep equipment cool. Neighbors sometimes complain about noise or garbage from nearby commercial kitchens and warehouses (仓库) for delivery services like Uber Eats.
Not so long ago, technology’s impact on our physical world wasn’t quite so obvious. What has changed is the rapid growth in demand. To meet demand, Amazon and other internet shopping companies have been opening warehouses and package distribution centers closer to where we live. Companies that deliver food to our door need to have real estate and transportation close to our homes and work. And the effects of climate change have made the competition for energy and water more urgent.
No individual or company is at fault for this situation on its own. Our collective demand for more online things is to blame, and the public, the government and companies need to face this new reality far more directly.
An article by The Information about conflicts over Amazon package operations in Milford, Mass., mentioned that the company formed a task force to address communities’ concerns about the impact of its delivery operations. Milford also appointed two officers to share residents’ concerns with Amazon. I don’t know if that s effective cooperation or window dressing, but it feels like a good first step to acknowledge that changing the places we live comes with tough questions about whether new neighbors are doing more good than harm.
Last year, I spoke with Richard Mays, the mayor (市长) of The Dalles, Ore., a town that is home to multiple computer data centers. Our conversation stuck with me because it got to the heart of the issue: Are these technology companies, many of them now in our backyards and on our streets, contributing more than they’re taking?
【1】What does the author try to stress in paragraph 2?
A.The serious problems of traffic and pollution.
B.The development of communities in urban areas.

【2】What does the author think of technology’s impact on our physical world?
A.It is under companies’ control.
B.It has to do with public demand.
C.It can be fought off effectively.
D.It goes unnoticed by the public.
【3】What is the purpose of Amazon’s task force?
A.To help Amazon serve more communities.
B.To promote Amazon’s delivery operations.
C.To ease the locals’ worries about Amazon.
D.To seek the government’s cooperation with Amazon.
【4】What is the author’s attitude to the benefits of technology companies close to communities?
A.Doubtful.
B.Positive.
C.Uncaring.
D.Contradictory.
22、A tender woman, or an independent one, which one would you prefer? Arecent research shows that most people would choose the latter.
This type of woman is called a nühanzi (“tough woman”). Experts believe these characteristics have social and psychological roots among young femalesin China. Su Hao’s friends all call her a tough woman, because she can finish tough tasks usually carried out by men. For example, she carries 10-litre water to her dormitory on the 5th floor. “I depend on no one but myself,” she says.
According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, tough women have become rather common in society. Of the 21,265 respondents, 78.5 percent said they are familiar with a tough woman. About 50 percent said they like women with tough characteristics, while less than 29 percent expressed the opposite view.
Why are tough women gaining popularity? Shen Meng, a psychological consultant, believes the fierce competition in society is contributing to this trend. “Women are often in a disadvantaged position compared to men,” Shen says. “In order to survive, they have to be independent, strong and tough.” Liu
Xiao lin, professor of psychology at Wuhan Mental Health Center, believes tough women are brought up this way. They are often on close relationship with their fathers, who teach their daughters to be brave and decisive,” he says. As a result, these women are more likely to be psychologically healthy and more tolerant to stress, according to Liu.
Though Liu believes that this is a good trend, Hu Shenzhi, a psychologist at the Guangdong Sunflower Counseling Center, says the popularity of tough woman indicates an unclear line between gender identities, which can lead to relationship problems. “Some women with characteristics that differ from the traditional female image may have a difficult time finding Mr Right,” he says.“Even if they get married, their manly characteristics might cause family conflicts.
【1】Which of the followings does NOT belong to the characteristics of a tough woman?
A. She is soft and tender to others.

A. about 16,700. B. 21,265.

【3】Why are there more tough women nowadays?
A. Because tough women are more lovely.
B. Because of the fierce competition in society.
C. Because more women want to be independent.
D. Because girls often love fathers more.
【4】What problems may tough women have in their life?
A. It’s difficult for them to be friends.

24、In the blue-green depths of the sea off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, an unusual seafloor sculpture park is defending its watery setting.
Since fisherman Paolo Fanciulli’s teens, he has been heading out daily to fish in these coastal waters along the Maremma coastline. It was in the 1980s that he began to notice the clear signs: a seabed that was becoming barren (贫瘠的), with exhausted fish stocks. Until recently, he has been forced to share catches with a threatening part: illegal “bottom trawlers (拖网捕鱼的人)”, who randomly spoil a large quantity of ocean life as they fish, dragging a weighted net along the seafloor behind their boats.
Fanciulli’s style of artisanal fishing (手工捕鱼), in contrast, needs to be friendly to nature as damaging the ecosystem could reduce fishermen’s income. Fanciulli understood that the success of his fishing activity was linked to the good state of the environment. The underwater “House of Fish” sculpture park, which was started in 2015 was encouraged by this fisherman. “One of the most effective solutions is to physically prevent trawling through artificial reefs…so I started working on this project, trying to combine the protection of the seabed with something that could also give an added value to our environment, something as beautiful as a sculpture,” he said.
Rocks or sculptures can break weighted trawler nets. They can also play a role as artificial reefs, giving corals and other sea life a place to live. Thanks to the underwater sculptures, some species not seen in a long while such as groupers and lobsters have returned. The sculpture park represents both an artistic statement and a physical barrier to seafloor trawling.
Today, 39 huge stone sculptures dot the seabed along an area of Tuscan coastline near the town of Talamone. In the immediate future, Fanciulli hopes to continue his great solution in coastal waters. “Man is still destroying the seas,” he says, “and my task continues.”
