二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Adults perform better when they have a lot to gain or lose. But scientists did not know whether teens did too. To find out, Insel asked 88 people between the ages of 13 and 20. She had them try a game. The participants looked at pictures of planets on a computer screen. They had to click as fast as they could when they saw a planet with designs. They were not supposed to click if a planet had no designs.

The participants could earn 20 cents for right answers but lose 10 cents for wrong ones. In other sessions, they’d get a dollar for right answers, and lose a half dollar for wrong ones. Players of all ages wanted to win the money, and cared more about bigger rewards than smaller ones.

As Insel expected, adults performed better when the stakes were high. But teens 13 to 18 played just as well whether they stood to win 20 cents or a dollar. Only 19- or 20-year olds stepped up their game for the higher stakes.

Insel’s team published this work November 28, 2017, in Nature Communications.

Brains change and mature during adolescence. And not all parts grow at the same rate. Insel was interested in two areas in particular. One is deep inside the brain and just above the ears. Called the ventral striatum (腹侧纹状体), it helps the brain calculate rewards. The ventral striatum becomes mature during the teen years.

The brain’s prefrontal cortex (前额叶) takes longer to mature. This area is important for planning and setting goals. It may not mature until early adulthood.

Nerve pathways - think of them as the brain’s “wiring” - connect the ventral striatum and prefrontal cortex. This lets the two regions communicate to make decisions. But because the prefrontal cortex matures later, the wiring between the two may not be complete until adulthood.

1Which of the following can explain Insel’s research?

A.Teens ignore key points in many aspects.

B.Adults behave better with higher rewards.

C.Teens give more attention to exams than usual work.

D.Adults behave more maturely than children in every way.

2What does the underlined word “stakes” refer to?

A.The final results of games or experiments.

B.The things that can be gained or lost in races.

C.The ambitions or energies that one experiences in games.

D.The powers that make one feel less pressure or pain.

3From the passage, we can know ___________.

A.the experiment aims to find out adults’ behaviour facing high stakes

B.teens have better performances in the first rounds

C.adults care less about the experiment at first

D.adults and teens show differently with high stakes

4Which is the best title of the passage?

A.Unlike adults, teens don’t perform better with high stakes

B.Who perform better, adults or children?

C.Stakes are the key points in promoting one’s passion

D.Whether low stakes or high stakes, one behaves similarly

  • 22、The British Library is holding a new exhibition named "Harry Potter: A History of Magic." The show coincides with the 20th anniversary of the publication of J.K. Rowling's first book.

The exhibit opened last Friday. It includes Rowling's outline for the book. It also includes her personal drawings of characters and a map of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

It also looks at magic and the nature of belief. It reveals that many of the things Harry Potter fans thought were imaginary were actually based in fact. Or they were based in folklore(民间传说). It includes rare books and manuscripts from around the world. It includes broomsticks and crystal balls. These offer insight into Rowling's inspiration and how the books came to be."I've taken liberties with folklore." That's what Rowling says in a video that opens the show.

The show is divided into rooms based on the subjects studied at Hogwarts. Hogwarts was the setting for Rowling's novels following the adventures of Harry. He is the orphan who learns at age 11 that he is a wizard. Each section touches on the legends and beliefs that Rowling wove into her stories.

Being hosted at the British Library meant the exhibition featured some amazing books. Their topics include palmistry(手相术) and tea leaf reading. And, of course, witches. Tanya Kirk, a curator, said working on the exhibit gave her a whole new appreciation of witches."I think all of the things I learned about witches is that they get quite a bad rap through history, and it was quite hard to find positive accounts," she said with a laugh. "The Harry Potter books have done a lot to change that."

The exhibition runs from Oct. 20 to Feb. 28, 2018 and has already sold some 30,000 tickets. The highest amount of advance tickets ever sold for a British Library exhibition. It will then travel to New York to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.” That is the book's title in the United States.

【3】The sections are categorized by ________

    A.different subjects in magic school

    B.different beliefs

C.different books of Harry potter’s stories

  • 23、Deep below the ground, radioactive elements break up water molecules(分子), producing ingredients that can fuel subsurface life. This process, known as radio-lysis(辐射分解), has sustained bacteria in isolated, water-filled cracks on Earth for millions to billions of years. Now a study published in Astro-biology shows that radiolysis may have supported life in the Martian subsurface.

Dust storms, rays in the universe and solar winds ruin the Red Planet's surface. But below-ground, some life might find refuge. "The environment with the best chance of habitability on Mars is the subsurface," says Jesse Tarnas, a planetary scientist at NASA. Examining the Martin underground could help scientists learn whether life could have survived there. And the best subsurface samples available today are Martin meteorites(陨石)that have crash-landed on Earth.

Tarnas and his colleague evaluated the mineral makeup and radio-active element abundance in the Martin surface using satellite and rover data. They input these data into a computer model that simulated(模拟)radiolysis to see how efficiently the process would have generated hydrogen gas and other chemical ingredients that can sustain the underground bacteria. The researchers report that if water was present, radiolysis in the Martin subsurface could have sustained life for billions of years and perhaps still could today.

Scientists previously studied Mars radiolysis, but this marks the first estimate using Martin rocks to quantify the planet's subsurface habitability. Tarnas and his colleagues also evaluated the potential richness of life in the Martin underground and found that as many as a million bacteria could exist in a kilogram of rock.

The most habitable meteorite samples analysed appeared to be made of a rock type called regolith breccia. "These are thought to come from the southern highlands of Mars, which is the most ancient area on Mars," Tarnas says.

Underground life, as described by this research, would require water and it remains unknown if groundwater exists on the planet, says Lujendra Ojha, a planetary scientist at Rutgers University. Determining whether the Martin subsurface contains water will be an important next step, but this investigation helps to motivate that search. Ojha says, "Where there is groundwater, there could be life."

【1】Scientists believe the Martian subsurface might be habitable probably because _________.

A.the Martin surface absorbs rays in the universe

B.radio-lysis may exist in the Martian underground

C.radiation combines ingredients for subsurface life to survive

D.cracks in Martian meteorites overflow with bacteria

【2】What's the purpose of using Martian meteorites?

A.To measure the Martian habitability below-ground

B.To simulate the process of producing hydrogen.

C.To help life find shelter from solar winds

D.To explore the source of hydrogen gas.

【3】What can be inferred from the last 3 paragraphs?

A.Tarnas was the first to study Mars radiolysis.

B.The Martian underground proved to be rich in bacteria.

C.The southern highlands of Mars are the most habitable.

D.The existence of groundwater is key to the investigation findings.

【4】The passage is mainly concerned with _________.

A.the reason for no life on the Martian surface

B.the source of data for the study of Martian habitability

C.the possibility of Mars sustaining life through radiation

D.the richness of radioactive elements below the Martian surface

  • 24、If boy wizard Harry Potter uses his magic to capture (迷住) the hearts of millions of teenagers, high school students Gabriella and Troy have charmed American boys and girls with their stories of campus life.

They are the leading characters in High School Musical, a series of hugely successful films in the US. The sequel (续集), High School Musical 3, came out on October 24 and has topped the American box office for two straight weeks.
