  • 21、   When a friend comes to you after a stressful day, how do you comfort them? Do you let them complain? Do you pour them a glass of wine? Those could work. But a new study finds that a very effective technique is also simple and easy — hugging.

Michael Murphy is a psychology expert at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He wanted to know if people who received hugs regularly could handle stress and conflict belief. " Individuals who report perceiving the availability of a network of supportive individuals lead to show better adaptation when faced with stress. But your just having a support network does not mean that you definitely feel that support, he said. "So some researchers have argued that many of the behaviors we use to support others who are stressed might actually be counterproductive, because  behaviors might unintentionally communicate to others that they're not able to manage stress."  he added.

Murphy and his team interviewed 404 men and women every evening for two weeks. During these interviews, the participants were asked a simple yes — or — no question — whether somebody had hugged them that day — and a simple yes or no question of whether they had experienced conflict or tension with somebody that day.

They also were asked questions about their social interactions — how many socialinteractions they had that day and responded to questions about negative and positive mood states . And the researchers found that individuals who experienced a conflict were not as negatively affected if they received a hug that day as were participants who experienced conflict and didn't get a hug. Murphy and his team also saw that people who received a hug didn't carry the negative effect to the next day, while those who did not receive a hug would. The findings are in the journal PLOS ONE.

Murphy does include this warning: "So our findings should not be taken as evidence that people should just start hugging anyone and everyone who seems distressed. A hug from one boss at work or a stranger on the street could be viewed as neither agreeable nor positive. " The idea is to relieve stress. Not add to it.

1What does the first paragraph serve as?

    A.A lead-in B.A background

    C.An argument D.A summary.

2Why did the researchers interview those people?

A.To test the influence of hugging.

B.To find out causes of their conflicts.

C.To ask for advice on relieving stress.

D.To seek ways to comfort troubled people.

3What do Murphy's words warn in the end?

A.The interview results prove their findings.

B.A boss should comfort workers by hugging.

C.There are some limitations of their findings.

D.People should hug others regularly and actively.

4Which can be the best title for the text?

A.Everyone Needs Hugs B.A Hug Could Do Anything

C.How to Comfort Your Friends D.Hugs Seem to Reduce Stress

  • 22、Few sick people consider the quality of the food when choosing a hospital. Even in America, a country where private hospitals have long provided individual rooms with such comforts as personal cable television, patients are often still fed institutional food. “Mystery meat” and processed-cheese slices are common; everything gets cooked in a microwave.

More hospitals are starting to feed their patients better food. Intermountain, a non-profit group based in Utah that runs 32 hospitals across the Mountain West, has since 2019 served freshly made meals to patients. Chefs in proper kitchens now source local ingredients to serve in cafeterias. Doctors are consulted to meet patients’ dietary needs. Christopher Delissio, the head chef at Intermountain, describes creating a meal for a Mexican child who was being treated for cancer. “He would not eat,” Mr Delissio recalls, and that was making it harder for him to recover from chemotherapy. “I was able to go up on the floor and speak to this boy’s parents and him and kind of figure out what he wanted,” he says.

The link between eating well and good health has long been clear, says David Eisenberg, a nutrition specialist at the Harvard School of Public Health. Heart disease, which has a direct connection to diet, is America’s biggest killer. Roughly two-fifths of American adults are clinically obese, and over 14% suffer from diabetes. The right food can help patients avoid going back to hospital. Yet doctors themselves have often been slow to recognise the need to encourage healthy eating, says Dr Eisenberg. Most health care remains curative, rather than preventive.

A decade ago Henry Ford Hospital in West Bloomfield opened a teaching kitchen where staff could help patients plan affordable, healthy meals and learn how to cook them. The idea is now spreading widely. In October a conference for health and food professionals in Los Angeles will encourage the adoption of such kitchens. Participants will tour a new one that has just opened at UCLA’s hospital.

  • 24、For the first time, scientists have grown plants in the moon soil collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts. The scientists had no idea if anything would grow in the moon dirt. They wanted to see if it could be used to grow food by the next generation of moon explorers. The results surprised them. Plants actually can grow in lunar (月球的) soil.

The researchers planted thale cress (芥蓝), a small flowering plant, in moon soil returned from the Apollo missions. The good news was that all of the seeds grew. The bad news was that after the first week the lunar soil stressed the plants so much that they grew slowly. Most of the moon plants ended up stunted—meaning small or not fully developed.

The longer the soil was exposed to radiation and solar wind on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to do. The soil collected by the Apollo 11 mission was the least helpful for growth. It was exposed a couple billion years longer to the elements.

Scientists said, “This is a big step forward to know that we can grow plants. The real next step is to go and do it on the surface of the moon.”

Moon dirt is full of glass particles from micrometeorite (微小陨石) impacts. One solution might be to use younger geologic spots on the moon, like lava flows, for digging up soil. The environment also could be changed by adding special nutrient (营养物) mixtures or artificial lighting.

Only 382 kilograms of moon rocks and soil were brought back by the six Apollo erews that landed on the moon. Most of them are still locked away, forcing researchers to experiment with soil made of volcanic ash on Earth.

Early last year NASA finally gave out 12 grams of soil to the University of Florida researchers for the planting experiment. NASA said the timing for such an experiment was finally right with the space agency looking to put astronauts back on the moon in a few years.

【1】What is the result of the planting experiment with lunar soil?

    A.The plants couldn’t grow normally.

B.It was difficult for the seeds to grow.

C.They were struck by some diseases.

D.The soil was too stressed for the plants to grow.

【2】What is the final purpose of this experiment?

    A.To create a new crop.

    B.To improve lunar soil.

    C.To plant on the moon.

D.To find the right amount of light.

【3】Why did the scientists use volcanic ash for testing?

A.Lunar soil cannot be brought back by humans.

B.Lunar soil was difficult to obtain for testing.

C.Lunar soil is not suitable for planting.

D.Lunar soil is the same as volcanic ash.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Future Astronauts Will Grow Food on the Moon

B.It’s Time to Study Growing Crops on the Moon

C.Lunar Soil Consists of Tiny Glass Particles

D.Scientists Grow Plants in Dirt from the Moon
