22、A wooden ship reaches the shore after crossing the Atlantic Ocean to this remote spot. The explorers aboard hope to establish a settlement here, in what is now Newfoundland, an island in eastern Canada. They’ll build homes and repair ships-perhaps preparing for more voyages farther into this unknown land. So who are these mysterious travelers? They are Vikings.
The word “Viking” means “pirate” (海盗) in their Old Norse language, and they lived up to the name. They were fierce invaders who lived between A. D. 750 and A. D. 1050, attacking lands outside their native Scandinavia (modern-day Denmark, Sweden, and Norway). Their voyages were recorded in stories called the Norse sagas (挪威传说).
The sagas tell of Vikings sailing west, likely toward Newfoundland. “Newfoundland has always been a focus in the search for Norse settlements,” Viking expert Neil Price says. “It’s one of the closest points to Greenland, where Vikings were known to trade.”
In 1960 archaeologists followed descriptions in the sagas to Newfoundland’s L’Anse aux Meadows. There they unearthed several artifacts, including foundations of longhouses, a type of building found in European Viking settlements. This made L’Anse aux Meadows the first confirmed Viking site in North America.
Archaeologist Sarah Parcak became interested in the search for North America Viking sites after the 1960 discovery. “If the sagas are true, then there must be other sites,” Parcak says. “But where are they?”
After studying the Canadian coastline, Parcak zeroed in on Point Rosee, some 400 miles south of L’Anse aux Meadows. Parcak’s team conducted a magnetic scan, or an X-ray of the ground. It showed high iron levels. Turns out that Vikings used iron to make their tools. Parcak’s team has done some digging, but they’re still waiting on test results to confirm what they’ve uncovered.
One thing they haven’t found is any flint (打火石) or pottery, which the Vikings did not use. Those items would’ve instead connected the site to Native American tribes or other European settlers.
If Parcak’s work confirms that Point Rosee was a Viking settlement, it helps fill in the map of where these explorers staked their claims. “A settlement there would suggest the Vikings explored more of North America,” Price says. “It might have served as a rest stop for trips farther south and west.”

A.Its being mentioned in the sagas.
B.Its unusual ground.

23、The icy waters surrounding Antarctica have long been called the Southern Ocean by scientists, the media, and even the US Board on Geographical Names. However, it never received the official recognition it deserved—until now. On June 8, 2021, the National Geographic Society, which has been making maps since 1915, announced that from now on, there would be five oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian. Arctic, and Southern Ocean.
They had been considering making the change for many years. However, it is only recently that the geographers decided that the Southern Ocean was not just an extension of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. It had the unique characteristics required to deserve its own name.
Alex Tait, a geographer, says that the change reflects the Society's desire to draw public attention to protecting the Southern Ocean's unique and fragile marine (海洋的) ecosystem. "We've always labeled it, but we labeled it slightly differently than other oceans," Tait explains. "This change was taking the last step and saying we want to recognize it because of its ecological separation."
The new ocean will include most of the waters around Antarctica out to 60 degrees south latitude, excluding (排除) the Drake Passage and the Scotia Sea. Unlike the other oceans, whose boundaries are defined (界定) by the surrounding continents, the extent of the Southern Ocean is determined by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) — the Earth's longest and strongest oceanic current.
The ACC was established 34 million years ago when Antarctica broke off from South America, enabling the water to freely flow around Earth's southernmost tip. Its water is colder and less salty than the ocean waters to the north and provides a unique habitat for thousands of species, including whales, penguins, and seals. Extending from the surface to the ocean floor, the ACC also significantly impacts Earth's climate. The powerful current, which draws in water from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, acts like a carrier allocating heat around the planet.
【1】Why is the Southern Ocean recognized?
A.It has no clear land boundaries.
B.It extends into the Pacific Ocean.
C.It has been separated ecologically.
D.It is home to various marine species.
【2】How is the Southern Ocean defined?
A.By an oceanic current.

C.By its marine ecosystem.
D.By the surrounding continents.
【3】What does the underlined word "allocating" in the last paragraph mean?

B.Earth now officially has five oceans.
C.A new ocean is appearing on the earth.
D.You have to change your concept about ocean.
24、 China became the first country to clone a monkey using non-reproductive cells, reducing the need to keep lab monkeys and paving the way for more accurate, effective, and affordable animal tests for new drugs.
By December of 2017, Chinese scientists had created two clone macaques named "Zhong Zhong" and "Hua Hua" by nuclear transferring of somatic cells -- any cell in the organism other than reproductive cells. This was the similar technology used to create the famous clone sheep Dolly in 1996.
Tetra, a rhesus monkey born in 1999, is the world’s first ever-cloned monkey, but it was done using a simpler method called embryo splitting, but it could only generate four cloned offspring at a time and cannot be genetically modified to suit experimental needs, said Pu Muming, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the director of Institute of Neuroscience, CAS. "Cloning a monkey using somatic cells has been a world-class challenge because it is a primate(灵长类)that shares its genetic makeup, therefore all of its complexity, with humans." Pu Muming said.
"For drug and other lab tests, scientists have to purchase monkeys from all over the world, which is costly, bad for the environment and produces inaccurate results because each monkey might have different genes, " Pu said. "By cloning monkeys using somatic cells, we can mass produce large numbers of genetically same offspring in a short time, and even change their genes to suit our needs," he added. "This can save time, cut down experiment costs, and produce more accurate results, leading to more effective medicine."
Sun Qiang, director of the non-human primate research facility at the institute, said most of the drug trials are currently done on lab mice. However, drugs that work on mice might not work or even have severe side effects on humans because the two species are so different. "Monkeys and Humans are both primates, so they are much closely related and testing on Monkeys is supposed to be as effective as testing on humans," he said. This is especially useful in testing drugs for neural diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, metabolic and immune system disease, and tumor, he added. "This achievement will help China lead the world research in an international science project related to neural(神经的)mapping of primate brains,”he said. However, bio labs from the United States, Japan, and European countries are also very able, and they will quickly catch up to China after the monkey cloning technology is made public, Sun added. " This means we have to innovate continuously and work extra harder this year to stay ahead," he said.
【1】What is special about China's cloning monkey?
A.It transferred cells in the lab. B.It creates two monkeys at a time.
C.It adopts a method of embryo splitting. D.It uses non-reproductive cells.
【2】Why do scientists clone monkeys?

A.Cloning a monkey using somatic cells is easy.
B.Scientists have easy access to monkeys.
C.Using somatic cells is more expensive to clone.
D.Using somatic cells to clone monkeys makes it possible to produce more effective medicine.
【4】What Sun said in the last paragraph suggests__________.
A.they are determined to catch up to America
B.they try to avoid competition from other countries
C.they aren't satisfied with what they have achieved
D.they have to keep the monkey-cloning technology a secret
