21、 A new study showed evidence of how coal burning which was caused by a volcanic eruption resulted in climate change in Siberia. It discovered the first direct evidence of how extensive burning of coal in Siberia caused the Permian-Triassic(二叠纪至三叠纪)Mass Extinction Event. Their study was published recently in Geology. The research team looked at the volcaniclastic rocks found in the Siberian Traps. These eruptions lasted for about two million years more. The mass extinction almost extinguished life on our planet around 252 million years in the past.
Researchers calculated the temperature of marine waters at the time extinctions were at their peak, and results showed that the planet was in an extremely high temperature level, with ocean and sea temperatures around the equator(赤道)over 104° F. Ecosystems and plant and animal species needed millions of years to establish a new balance and recover populations.
One assuming cause of the event involves massive coal burning, which led to extreme global warming and extinguished most life forms. The team set out to look for evidence of this theory and began to study the region of the Siberian Traps, where magma and lava (岩浆和熔岩)are known to have burned coal and wood.
In the Angara River, the team found high cliffs of volcaniclastic rocks that line the river for many hundreds of miles. They studied the structures for six years, travelling far and wide to collect rocks. More than a thousand pounds of rock samples were collected and shared with a scientific team.
Upon analysis, they found strange parts that seemed to be burnt wood and coal.
Co-author Steve Grasby from the Geological Survey of Canada had previously found similar tiny burnt coal material on an arctic island in Canada, which also dated from the end of the Permian Period and were believed to have floated into the area from Siberia.
Similar events also occur today, with human burning of coal and other fossil energies. The team leader Elkins — Tanton says this is an extra incentive (动 因)for us to act now. Indeed? taking action may prevent or at least slow another mass extinction event.

22、Today I had to go to work with my crutches (拐杖). I was worried about using my crutches. People would think I was looking for attention, judge me because I was overweight or think I didn’t need then. I kept asking my husband, “Is this odd?” He replied, “I don’t know what kind of pain you’re in.” I accepted that. He didn’t know. I couldn’t assume anything. I had to do what was best for me.
Six months ago, I was in the emergency room twice for unbearable pain in my hips (臀部) and down my left leg. I couldn’t stand, walk or sit. The doctors declared it sciatica (坐骨神经痛) and ordered physical treatment, which did help.
But since the sciatic attack, I have been suffering from pain. I had to stay at home from work because I could barely get out of bed. I was not sure what was going on, but I knew that there were days when I needed help.
I used crutches because my hips ached with every move. The doctor agreed the crutches would keep me upright and would help me keep moving when I didn’t want to or couldn’t move.
On weekdays, I had to stand for hours sometimes, I spent the weekends packing boxes and carrying things down stairs because we were moving to another apartment. We didn’t get everything packed in time for the move, so now we had to finish up.
I overworked my body, so my crutches came with me to work today. Some people remembered my first sciatic attack and offered to help with stuff. Others forgot and were shocked that just yesterday, I wasn’t using crutches, but today I was. My boss assigned me tasks that I couldn’t do today, but my student assistant offered to help. At lunch, when I lay on the floor of my office and took a rest, no one laughed at me.
Tonight I have to do more packing and more loading. I’m grateful for my crutches. I can have an easy laugh and make jokes about the pain—oh, you know that sciatica, undiagnosed repeated pain!

23、Advanced technology brings with it a lot of benefits to us. You can now prevent the speech of a single target person from being recorded by using a device called voice jammer.
Voice jammers work much like noise-canceling headphones, which effectively remove unwanted background sound waves out of existence by playing back a copy of the unwanted sound with its wave pattern inverted (反向的).
Such voice jammers generally stop electronic eavesdropping (窃听) on conversations by broadcasting inverse sound waves that affect all microphones within earshot.
This can prevent nearby people’s phones from picking up their voices if they try to make a call, and can stop them interacting with smart assistants, warning that something strange is going on.
Now Qiben Yan at Michigan State University and his colleagues have created a voice jammer that can target a specific voice without causing interruption to anyone else. They did this by training an artificial intelligence called a neural network to isolate (隔断) a speaker’s voice, allowing the jammer to create an inverse sound matched to their speech.
Rather than sending an audible sound, their tool, called Neural Enhanced Cancellation (NEC), makes use of a bug found in all but the most expensive microphones. This bug introduces sounds at set distances above and below the microphone’s recording frequencies. NEC is able to play its inverse speech in the ultrasonic (超声波) range, so that humans can’t hear it. Doing this at the point of recording provides the necessary frequencies to secretly block an audible voice.
The team found that NEC blocked voices on a range of smartphones from Apple, Xiaomi and Samsung at a distance of up to 3.6 metres. And this technology could be useful.

24、 Why would human beings waste a third of their lives sleeping when they could be doing more important things like looking after their families or working? Some scientists believe sleeping helps recharge the body, while others think it is important for strengthening newly-formed memories. Now, there is new evidence which suggests that the purpose of sleep may be to forget some of the millions of new things we learn each day.
The neurons (神经元) in the human brain consist of fibers called dendrites (树突). These grow as we learn new things and connect the brain's cells to each other at contact points called synapses (突触). The larger the dendrites become and the more cells they connect, the more information we store.
In 2003, Giulio Tononi and Chiara Cirelli, both biologists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, suggested a new idea: The things our brains learn each day result in so many synapses that things start to get a little messy. Sleeping allows us to sort through the "noise" and dispense all the unnecessary information, leaving behind only the most important memories-
Recently, the university's research has provided direct evidence to support the theory. The experiment involved analyzing 6,920 synapses in the brain shavings from two groups of mice over a four — year period; one group had been allowed to sleep, while the other had been kept awake and entertained with toys. The researchers discovered that the brain shavings of the sleeping mice had nearly 20 percent fewer synapses than those that had been kept awake and entertained.
It was also evident during the study that the brain does not shave every synapse. 20% of neurons remained unchanged; these were most likely well-established memories. Therefore, although we may be sleeping to forget some of what we've learned, the brain "forgets" in a smart way.
Most researchers believe clearing our brains is not the only purpose of sleep. Resting our minds and bodies has also been found to help with other biological functions like strengthening our immunity. Though scientists may never agree on a single reason, they are all sure of one thing — a good night's rest is essential for our health. So try and spend at least a third of your day sleeping!
【1】What will happen when we learn new things?
