Though insignificant, small talk still has great power. When talking with fellow humans, much of our soul is exposed through non-verbal communication. The length of their response might indicate their level of self-confidence; the tone of speaking might show how agreeable a person is; their slightly lowered head, as if protecting themselves from attack, a possible sign of a regrettable history of bullying.
As more of a person's character is revealed, we have the insight needed to determine whether to put forward more significant topics—the things that we actually want to talk about. Conversation is a great educator, and deep conversation establish lasting bonds with our fellow humans, forming precious friendships that paint our lives with vivid colors. 22、NASA has flown an aircraft on another planet for the first time. On Monday, April 19, Ingenuity, a 1. 8-kilogram drone (无人机) helicopter, took off from the surface of Mars, flew up about three meters, then hovered for 40 seconds and took photos above with one of its two cameras. The historic moment was livestreamed on YouTube. “We can now say that human beings have flown a drone helicopter on another planet,” said MiMi Aung, the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, at a press conference. “We, together, flew at Mars, and we, together, now have our Wright brothers moment,” she added, referring to the first powered airplane flight on Earth in 1903.
The details: The flight was a significant technical challenge, thanks to Mars' s bone-chilling temperatures (nights can drop down to -130 °F / -90 °C) and its incredibly thin atmosphere — just 1% the density of Earth' s. That meant Ingenuity had to be light, with rotor blades (螺旋桨) that were bigger and faster than would be needed to achieve liftoff on Earth (although the gravity on Mars, which is only about one-third of Earth's, worked in its favor). The flight had originally been scheduled to take place on April 11 but was delayed by software issues.
Why it's significant: Beyond being a significant milestone for Mars exploration, the flight will also pave the way for engineers to think about new ways to explore other planets. Future drone helicopters could help astronauts by scoping out locations, exploring inaccessible areas, and capturing images. Ingenuity will also help inform the design of Dragonfly, a car-size drone that NASA is planning to send to Saturn's moon Titan in 2027.
What's next: In the next few weeks, Ingenuity will conduct four more flights, each lasting up to 90 seconds. Each one is designed to further push the limits of Ingenuity's capabilities. Ingenuity is only designed to last for 30 Martian days, and is expected to stop functioning around
May 4. Its final resting place will be in the Jezero Crater as NASA moves on to the main focus of its mission: Getting the Perseverance rover (毅力号火星探测器) to study Mars for evidence of life.

23、Farmers and runners have a lot in common. There is the drive to struggle in tough conditions. There is the ability to do hard labor, outside in any condition. There is also the restlessness, which, however, might be unique to Elle Purrier St. Pierre, a farmer and a professional runner, who admits she has a tough time sitting still, as a result of her growing up on a dairy(奶制品)farm, where she developed a working attitude that is hard to change. "Cows need to be fed; they need to be milked. And if something breaks, you have to figure out a way to fix it, and you have your responsibilities no matter what," she says. "That attitude really helps me in my career now."
Purrier St. Pierre will run for Team USA in the Olympic Games in Tokyo this year, where she’ll compete in the 1,500-meter run. In February 2020, she broke the American record for fastest indoor mile, with a time of 4:16.85. A year later, she broke the American record for the indoor two-mile, at 9:10.28. And sure, she trains hard, and is diligent and naturally athletic. But according to Purrier St. Pierre, farming is what initially set her up for success on the track.
"Runners and farmers are similar in their lifestyle. It’s just something that they do every single day. They’re kind of addicted," says Furrier St. Pierre. "It’s just who you are."
While farming is a central part of who Furrier St. Pierre is, running is a more recent addition. She started running in high school, despite the school not actually having a track. Instead, she trained on the dirt roads near her farm or the mountain biking trails that surround the hilly town. They proved to be good training grounds. It was in college that she started to identify as a runner and pursue it as a career. Now, running is what she’s known for, and there are high hopes for her to bring home a medal from Tokyo.
Whatever happens at the games, Furrier St. Pierre is excited to come home to the support of her husband, who is unsurprisingly, also a dairy farmer. As much as running is her life and career at this moment, Furrier St. Pierre keeps one eye on her future, and that’s on the farm.
