  • 22、   Many science fiction stories tell about explorers arriving in a new world. The explorers then use some kind of high-tech device to test for breathable air or signs of life. But here on Earth, science fiction is becoming reality through a new sampling technology called environmental DNA, or eDNA for short. Scientists can use it to identify rare species or estimate fish populations with just a little air or water.

“Essentially we can take a sample of soil or air - and in our case-water, and we can sequence the DNA out of it and tell you what is there.” says Ryan Kelly, an ecologist at the University of Washington .

Environmental DNA can be used in two ways. One is to identify the creatures that live in a certain place. The other is to confirm the presence or lack of a specific creature.

“It is extremely useful for species that are really hard to find. I have spent many hours looking for species that I was pretty sure were there - looking under rocks, looking in water, doing all kinds of surveys.” says Caren Goldberg, one of the first biologists to take the technology from the testing stage to actually using it. She sees eDNA as a way to get answers more efficiently and with less destruction compared to traditional survey techniques. Until recently, scientists depended on snorkeling (潜水), netting or using an electric current to temporarily catch fish.

This newer way to identify what lives in the environment is becoming popular around the world. Animal experts in Vietnam are using the eDNA to find the last, wild Yangtze giant softshell turtles. One researcher on the Caribbean island of Trinidad is using the sampling technology to find endangered golden treefrogs. In Mad a gas ear, it is being used to identify amphibian(两栖动物) diseases.

Ms Goldberg has used eDNA testing to confirm the local extinction(灭绝) of a leopard frog in the American state of Idaho. She has also been asked to document the spread of the New Zealand mud snail in the state of Washington. The creature has been found in lakes and other waterways across the state.

Scientists working with the technology say they do not expect robots to replace field biologists anytime soon. But the old-fashioned fieldwork could soon be more targeted.

1Environmental DNA can not be used to___________.

A.identify what creatures live in a certain place.

B.make clear when a certain creature disappeared

C.prove the a specific creature exists

D.warn the lack of a specific creature

2Compared to traditional survey techniques, eDNA is more___________.

    A.time-consuming B.eco-friendly

    C.dangerous D.convincing

3By using eDNA, Caren Goldberg has___________.

    A.succeeded in catching many fishes

B.found the existence of golden treefrogs

C.documented the spread of softshell turtles

D.confirmed the disappearance of the leopard frog in Idaho

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A.Robots will replace scientists soon.

B.Some scientists are against using eDNA.

    C.The old-fashioned fieldwork may disappear.

D.Many biologists are unwilling to do the fieldwork.

5What is the best title for the text?

A.Science Fiction Becomes Reality for Species Surveys

B.Biologists Explore Space with the Help of eDNA

C.Scientists Found Methods to Test for Signs of Life.

D.New Technologies Are Presented in Science Fictions

  • 23、As Americans cut the cord(电线), Europeans sign up for more pay-TV. The biggest television drama of the past decade has been the story of how people watch it.

Ten years ago nearly nine out of ten American households subscribed to cable or satellite. Today little more than half do. The collapse of pay-TV, with the advance of online streaming(流媒体), has turned over the television industry. And the pace at which consumers are "cutting the cord" from cable providers is only increasing.

But not everywhere. On the other side of the Atlantic, cord-cutters are outnumbered by cord-knotters. As Americans tear up their contracts, Europeans are signing up for cable and satellite in greater numbers than ever. Why has American media's trend missed Europe?

One reason is price. America's cable industry may look competitive, but it is highly regionalised, so most homes have few options. The result is an average monthly cable bill of nearly $100. British homes pay less than half as much.

A second factor is content. American cable TV is running out of shows as studios move their best ones to their own streaming platforms. In Europe, Pay-TV firms keep the rights of many of the most popular programs. Britons seeking the third season of Warner Media's "Succession", for instance, must go to Sky, a satellite firm, since Warner Media hasn't streamed outside the Americas.

The last reason why Europe still favors cable is that American streamers have collaborated with European pay-TV firms rather than competing with them. The latter are the ones with access to consumers and the ability to handle local marketing and ad sales.

Will cord-cutting at last cross the Atlantic? As long as film studios continue to license their programming to local players, consumers will have every reason to stick with pay-TV. In the long run, though, studios would rather bring viewers onto their own platforms, as in America. By the time the fourth season of "Succession" is out, audiences may be watching it online.

【1】What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

    A.The fall of American households.

B.The decline of pay-TV in America

C.The rise of TV industry in America

D.The start of online streaming in America.

【2】Why is the third season of "Succession" mentioned in Paragraph 5?

A.To indicate the life in Europe is much more colorful.

B.To tell us there is no streaming platform in Europe.

C.To show TV contents in Europe are more appealing.

D.To introduce a very interesting TV program to us.

【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined word "collaborated"?

    A.cooperated.

    B.contradicted.

    C.communicated

    D.consulted.

【4】What do we know from the last paragraph?

A.The pay-TV will remain the first choice of people in Europe.

B.People in Europe may turn to online streaming in the future.

C.Studios will license more programs to pay-TV firms in Europe.

D.Nobody in Europe will subscribe to pay-TV in the future.

  • 24、“Your skin’s a bit dry,” one user commented on a video posted by Angie, a popular influencer who first appeared on Chinese social media last fall. “You should apply a face mask.” In the video, uploaded to Douyin, Angie’s skin looks not smooth. A yawn shows slightly crooked teeth.

Typical influencers might respond back with a comment, but Angie is not a typical influencer—she’s not even a real person. Unlike China’s other virtual influencers, Angie doesn’t pose in designer clothes or promote new songs. Instead, she wears simple white tees, drinks Coca-Cola and yawns on screen. Sometimes she can be seen with zits. And her down-to-earth image clearly relates to people on Douyin, where she has attracted over 280,000 followers to date.

Virtual influencers are nothing new in China. The country’s first digital personality Ling was created in 2020. With her sharp jawline, thin face and rosy lips, Ling reflects a traditional Chinese beauty ideal. But Angie offers a refreshing alternative in a country where demand for plastic surgery is increasing and beauty apps compete to create filters that show users more beautiful versions of themselves.

Angie is the creation of Jesse Zhang, director of a Shenzhen-based CGI animation company. Zhang thought it would be fun to create a virtual character with imperfect features who could help people relax and feel more positive about themselves. Angie started taking shape in 2020, and within three months Zhang had posted his character’s first video to Dyinbe December, she had already gained around 100,000 fans. “I didn’t think she would take off so quickly,” he said, attributing her popularity to her calming, casual videos.

Some fans have credited Angie with cheering them up or helping them reduce life’s pressure. Angie, last time I left you a message saying I was feeling really sad. Now, I’m doing much better,” The follower said they were preparing for the upcoming semester, and that they would try to work hard in school. “Keep pressing on,” Angie wrote in response, adding that sad moments will become things of the past.

【1】What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 imply?

    A.Angie is facially damaged.

    B.Angie is not beautiful enough.

    C.People don’t like Angie.

D.Angie doesn’t have the face of a celebrity.

【2】What is the major difference between Ling and Angie?

    A.The image they have.

    B.The app they use.

C.The social media where they appear.

    D.The way they were created.

    【3】Why did Zhang create Angie?

    A.For fame.

    B.For money.

    C.For work.

    D.For entertainment.

【4】What can be learned from this passage?

A.Virtual influencers are quite new and strange in China.

B.Zhang predicted Angie would succeed on the social media overnight.

C.This imperfect virtual influencer is challenging beauty standards in China.

D.Angie’s popularity results from her humorous and easygoing character.
