She continued to teach at school for several years after her marriage, then began offering college lessons in her home to women students. Later she founded a school in New York State, which was the first school for higher education in the U. S. for women. Emma Willard also tried to persuade New York state to pass a law to allow women to attend public colleges and universities, though that did not come about until after her death. 27、 Humans don't know why the environment shapes the gender of some lizards, crocodiles and all kinds of sea turtles.
Sea turtle eggs that hatch below 81.86 degrees Fahrenheit produce males, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, while nests in the mid-80s create a gender mix. Anything higher than 87.8 degrees, though, is 100 percent girls.
A 2018 study on green turtles near Australia's Great Barrier Reef found 116 female hatchlings for every male. The study found that 99 percent of hatchlings from the warmer northern beaches were female while the share in the cooler south was much lower (69 percent).
NOAA researchers determined the gender gap in Australia started widening after the early 1990s,when the temperature started climbing. Female turtles that hatched before that period were more than males by a smaller rate-6 to 1.
A 2015 report from San Diego also showed a change after years of hotter nesting seasons: Sea turtles tested on the southern California shores had gone from 65 percent to 78 percent female.
And researchers at Florida Atlantic University guess that hatchlings on Boca Raton's beaches these days are at least 90 percent female.
Scientists have been testing methods to cool the nests. Gently digging up eggs and moving them to shadier parts of the beach has proved to work. So do sprinkler(洒水) systems and dividing eggs into smaller hatches.
Once replanted, the hatchlings burst from the ground some 50 days later in 1-by-1-foot area, moving in circles until someone puts them into a wooden box and carries them to the shore, where they climb into the waves.

28、 It’s that time of the year again, when Apple fans go crazy about the release (发行) of the new iPhone. The new model, which will be released in the Chinese mainland later this year, is a little bit longer than the iPhone4S.
Although the size changed, the model is actually thinner and lighter than last one. It comes with a high-resolution “retina” screen that’s sharper than the 4S, according to Apple.
So far, demand for the iPhone5 has been higher than expected (预计的), with 2 million pre-orders (预定) made in the first 24 hours. But while the new phone excited many people, it also left a lot of people disappointed (失望). Mat Honan called the iPhone5 “completely amazing and very boring”. “Though we’ve reached the sixth iPhone, things have got so good that Apple does not change very much any more,” he said. “And so you get the iPhone5, which looks like a longer, thinner one of the iPhone4.”
When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone back in 2006, it won praise from all over the world. Similar praise was given to Apple when it introduced the first iPad in 2010.
However, recent smart-phone designs have failed to satisfy people as much. Stephen Shankland said “it’s time to lower your expectations (期望).” This is because we have entered a time where it is harder for phone designers to come up with better ideas and changes. It could be some time before someone comes up with the next big idea.
【1】Apple fans are going crazy because of______.
A.the size of the new phone B.the release of iPhone5

B.The iPhone5 hasn't won the same praise as the first iPhone.

D.People don’t have any expectations for the coming iPhone6.

A.has not improved much B.has nothing amazing
C.is not as good as the iPhone4S D.looks more beautiful

D.Stephen Shankland thought the iPhone5 is good enough.
29、The world is full of tea drinkers. For many, they simply enjoy the taste. But new research suggests tea might help those who drink it live longer than those who do not. Tea is known to contain substances (物质) that can help reduce inflammation (炎症). Past studies in China and Japan have suggested several health benefits of green tea. Now, scientists say black tea may show similar benefits.
Scientists from the United States National Cancer Institute carried out the study. They examined years of data gathered about the tea-drinking behavior of almost 500, 000 adults in Britain, where black tea is the most common tea. The study found that high tea intake (摄取量)—two or more cups a day—was linked to a moderate benefit: a 9 to 13 percent lower risk of death from any cause than non-tea drinkers. Scientists say the lowered risk of death held true for study subjects with heart disease. However, researchers said there was no clear finding in connection with deaths from cancer.
Tea contains various elements, including polyphenols (多酚), Polyphenols are considered responsible for the health benefits that have traditionally been linked to ten, especially green tea. Green tea is reported to improve mental ability, alleviate digestive problems and head pain, and help people with weight loss. It has also been studied for possible protective effects against heart disease and cancer.
However, the study of British tea drinkers was based on observing people’s behaviors and health. This kind of method cannot prove cause and effect. “Observational studies like this always raise the question: Is there something else that makes tea drinkers healthier?” said Marion Nestle, a professor of food studies at New York University. “The study does not offer enough evidence to advise people to change their tea behaviors. If you drink one cup a day already, I think that is good,” said Inoue Choi, who led the study.
【1】What does the new study mainly focus on?
A.The effects of tea on health.
B.The popularity of tea culture.
C.The harmful substances in tea.
D.The right amount of tea intake.
【2】According to the study, people with high tea intake are likely to ______.
