二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   It’s spring in Southern California, when leaving the house means getting faced with the sweet smell of flowers. It’s also wildflower season, and thanks to some nice rains, we’re surrounded by super flowers. It got me thinking about the one sense, and thanks to some nice rains, we’re surrounded by super flowers. It’s also wildflower season, and thanks to some nice rains, we’re surrounded by super flowers. It got me thinking about the one sense I usually take for granted: Smell. And that’s especially true when it comes to teaching my child about the world.

There are some blocks and toy cars for touching, learning and body development. The toys are mainly mirrors, lights, things that make noise. Through these, children are introduced to materials, sights, and sounds. We also offer out children a daily touching of flavors and tastes. But how can we teach smell? Out of all the senses, smell is most closely linked with memory, but it’s the one I often forget in my own life unless I’m faced with it – the sweet orange flowers of spring, the movie popcorn smell that remains on my clothes after I leave the theater, the sharp smell of onions, or the carpets in a house where someone smoked for decades.

I want to develop that sense more for myself, but also want to cultivate(培养) it in my child too. So last weekend I took my son on a smelly walk, and we walked around the neighborhood for flowers to experience and discuss. He’s only 2.5 years old, so I still have to remind him to smell by sucking the air in through his nose, not blowing the air out like a dragon. And it actually went really well! I think nest time we might walk through my training: Smells “cozy.” Smells “like morning.” Smells “like grandpa.” (Grandpa lives in Ohio and we haven’t seen him in more than a year, so I don’t know what this means.)…

1What does the author usually take for granted?

A.The timely rains. B.The sense of taste.

C.The sense of smell. D.The knowledge about the world.

2Children may develop other senses except smell by_______.

    A.playing toys B.smelling flowers

C.going to the theater D.buying some popcorn

3Why did the author remind the child to smell in a certain way?

A.It was the best way to smell.

B.The child was not old enough yet.

C.The child asked the author to do so.

D.The author dislike the child’s way to smell

4How did the author feel about the training of smell last weekend?

    A.Curious B.Worried

    C.Anxious D.Satisfied

  • 27、For many of us, our closest meeting with wild animals is at a zoo. These places allow us to observe the behaviours and characteristics of amazing creatures. It’s an enjoyable and educational experience for us, but is it the best environment for the animals? A long time ago, people could only see wild animals as stuffed dead exhibits in a museum. Later, live animals were caught by explorers, brought home and put on show to the public in zoos — animal protection was not a priority. But modern zoos and wildlife parks have transformed the conditions and environments for animals, making bigger enclosures (围场), removing bars, and, to some extent, copying their natural habitats.

Some people have questioned the cruelty of keeping animals and using them just for entertainment, but zoos are keen to show they are here to help wildlife by educating us about protection. In the UK, the introduction of The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 also required zoos to educate the public. Well-managed zoos are now also involved in supporting and funding protection programmes.

Probably the biggest claim from zoos today is that they help to protect species that are under threat in the wild due to climate change. Robert Young, Chair in Wildlife Protection at Salford University says: “We wouldn’t have a lot of different species today if it wasn’t for zoos.” Some zoos have breeding (繁殖) programmes which help to preserve the future of species. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently praised Chester Zoo in the UK for its protection work. It brought a rare fish species back from the dead after breeding and releasing a school of golden fish back into their native river.

While the debate about having zoos continues, new opportunities to meet wildlife are being explored, such as using virtual reality, and Jon Coe, a zoo designer, told the BBC: “Taking a walk through a group of elephants in the Serengeti, I think, is going to be possible pretty soon.”

  • 28、The British love word-play and they’re enthusiastic about defending the use of their language. In recent years, books about the grammar, pronunciation and punctuation (标点) of English have been written by the dozen, and sold extremely well, reflecting people’s love of the English language. People want to defend the “correct” use of their language, but also to preserve its ability to evolve along with society. Lynne Truss’s book Eats, Shoots & Leaves is an excellent example of these two opposite ideas. Its title shows the way that punctuation can change meaning in a sentence. “Eats shoots and leaves” is a perfectly normal description of a panda’s diet: he eats the shoots and leaves of bamboo trees. But the position of the comma (逗号) turns those nouns into verbs, and makes up a ridiculous little story: the panda eats (his dinner), he shoots (a gun), and he leaves (the building). It’s a silly joke, but it shows how changing something as simple as a comma can change the entire meaning of a sentence.

Published in 2003, Eats, Shoots & Leaves was an unexpectedly huge success. It is easy to assume the typical reader of this kind of book as the humourless type. However, the book has sold thousands and thousands of copies — it must be appealing to a wide range of people. The book’s winning secret is this: it makes some serious points about language and punctuation, but also has a light-hearted dimension, and uses stories and jokes to show its points. It has invited some tough criticism, too, especially from the US. On a broader range, Eats, Shoots & Leaves has opened up a lot of public debate on Truss’s ideas. Whether they agree with her or not, punctuation and grammar has become a popular topic to discuss.

In every generation there will be people who think that the standard of language is in decline, and who are more than happy to write to the newspapers to express their concern and opinions. Truss’s book also appeals to those who think that texting and blogging is lowering the standard of literacy. Whether the standard of the English language is decreasing, or simply evolving into new forms, the success of Eats, Shoots & Leaves proves that this is a subject that many English speakers find interesting and important.

【1】The title of the book Eats, Shoots & Leaves is a joke which shows ________.

D.it presents the new research on English

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The English language was better in the past.

B.The English language is being improved by technology.

C.There is often dissatisfaction with the standard of English.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.The Problem Punctuation Created

    B.The Difference a Comma Made

  • 29、English is full of funny expressions that don’t always make sense. Idioms are phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word, you may not understand the idiom because you don’t understand the culture behind it. Here are some English idioms based on animals.

When children jump around and act silly, their parents may tell them to stop “monkeying around”.To “monkey around” means to do things that are not useful or serious, or to simply waste time.

Many American families have and love pet dogs. But for some unknown reason, Americans use “dog” in a phrase that means to feel unwell. If you are “as sick as a dog”, you’re really, really sick.

Sometimes you may also hear cats mentioned in conversations, “I told you to keep that secret, but you have just ‘let the cat out of the bag’!” You probably guessed it — that idiom means to reveal a secret or tell facts that were previously unknown.

Dogs and cats don’t always get along, but they appear side by side in a commonly used idiom. When it rains heavily, people might say it’s “raining cats and dogs”.

Heavy rain often ruins people’s plans for outdoor activities. But on a lovely day, you can have a picnic. If a swarm (一群) of tiny bugs love your food and start to hover (盘旋) around you, it would be really annoying. That experience perfectly explains why people often tell someone who keeps bothering them to “stop bugging me”.

Idioms are very common in both spoken and written English. If you want to have a better understanding of English, you have to learn idioms.

【1】According to Paragraph 1, which is right about idioms?

A.Expressions which are based on animals.

    B.Expressions with rich cultural background.

    C.Expressions that always make sense.

D.Expressions which are easy to understand.

【2】What can “monkeying around” be used to describe?

A.Children jump around and waste time.

B.Children do something useful and serious.

C.Children play with monkeys with their parents.

D.Children spend time playing with their family pets.

【3】What can be learned from the text?

A.Dogs and cats always get along nicely.

B.Bugs can be used to show your annoyance.

C.Americans believe cats can give away secrets.

D.Americans use the idiom “as sick as a dog” to describe a healthy man.

【4】How does the text mainly develop?

    A.By sharing experiences.

    B.By making comparisons.

    C.By giving examples.

    D.By listing figures.

  • 31、

If you can’t seem to catch enough Z’s during the week, you’re not alone. But bad things happen to your body when you’re sleep-deprived, not least of which is weight gain. Well, here’s some good news: Sleeping in on the weekend to make up for sleep lost during the week is 1 with lower body mass index (BMI), according to a study published in the Oxford University Press journal Sleep.

The researchers, a collaboration of scientists based in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Republic of Korean, sought to determine if what they refer to as “catch-up sleep”2 body mass index (BMI) in the general population. To do so, they conducted face-to-face interviews of a random sampling of 2,156 adults, comparing their sleep habits with their BMI scores. The 932 participants who slept in – “catch-up sleepers” (people who sleep longer on the weekend than on weekdays by approximately two hours) had a(n)3lower BMI than the other subjects. What’s more, every additional hour of catch-up sleep was linked with a decrease in BMI.

As to why sleeping in on weekends can lead to weight loss, one of the study co-authors, Robert Thomas, MD, MMSc, of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston,4 Reader’s Digest of the “substantial(大量的) experimental and epidemiological(流行病学的) data that short sleep contributes to weight gain.” He notes, “our best 5as researchers are that there are balances to be kept, and the body can adjust and 6 within reason. Catch-up sleep allows the basic balance to be maintained.”

Although the study showed significant differences in BMI with the 7of two or more hours of catch-up sleep, Dr. Thomas points out that there are “substantial individual differences,” such that the benefit we get from those extra hours will vary 8 on how much sleep each of us generally needs. “To determine your optional sleep, you can track the time spent sleeping on nights when there is no need to wake up to an alarm,” suggests Liza Baker, a health coach at Simply Health Coaching. That tells you about how many hours of sleep your body likes to get, since it 9greatly across the population, from just 4 to 5 hours to 9 to 10 hours.

So can you actually lost weight by sleeping in on the weekend? Only if you’re paying off a sleep 10from the week, according to the result of this study. It helps if you’re also eating less, Dr. Thomas adds.
