26、The images were shocking, and the reaction was completely predictable. The sight of a polar bear lying hurt on a beach - blood matting the fur of its neck, with one huge paw folded under its body - received immediate criticism globally. By the shore in the background stand a group of guides, talking to each other. One of them had a gun hanging casually on his shoulder. This is not something that is taken lightly. 【1】 .
This powerful image raises questions about the motivations (动机) of this kind of tourism or ecotourism. 【2】. Are there regions in the world where nature should be left completely untouched? Has our access to large animals in the wild, often driven by a desire for sensational images, led these animals to become accustomed to human contact? If so, the loser would surely pay a heavy price for such an approach.
Before we answer these questions, we would consider the events that are of global concern. For me, I was definitely shocked. I have recently returned from a trip to Svalbard, and indeed stood two weeks ago on the very beach where the bear was shot. 【3】. Was the beach examined from the ship offshore beforehand? Was there access to flares (信号弹) to scare off a bear that appeared suddenly? These are standard measures for a respectable operator, and the accident could be the result of a system failure.
However, images and events should not be used to criticize the concept of ecotourism. Ecotourism is an expanding market that brings benefits as well as challenges to the regions around the world in which it operates. 【4】. The key is responsibility and research before booking. If ecotourism is done properly, the benefits are immediate and lasting.
A.The bear's death should never have happened.
B.The reality, however, is considerably more complex.
C.Simply closing off these regions is not the answer.
D.Should we be in these environments at all?
E.Visitors often become ambassadors (大使) for the endangered polar bear.
F.This can be by making financial decisions to conservation groups.
27、It was early winter several years ago. I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year’s use. It was still in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters’ wear. I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift.
I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat every day. Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that there was someone who couldn’t afford a coat but could get my old one.
My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a while. I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover.” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have.
【1】Which word can best describe the author’s daughter?
A.Wealthy.
B.Thoughtful.
C.Easy-going.

A.It cost too much.
B.It was looking dirty.
C.There was not enough room for his new coat.
D.It was not sent to someone in need.
【3】What is the author’s decision after his second coat becomes old?
A.Telling his daughter.
B.Buying a new one soon.
C.Donating it to charity.
D.Sending something else to charity.
【4】What does the author want to show in the last paragraph?
A.Giving fills our wants.
B.Love is the key to joy.
C.The more you give, the more you lose.
D.A coat is large enough to cover our wants.
28、 If you’re not ready to keep a dog or a cat, Panasonic has introduced yet another companion robot that dutifully pays attention to you just like a real pet.
Nicobo isn’t easy to describe; it’s as if someone flipped a bowl over, gave it some lively eyes, a wagging tail, and then wrapped in an old sock. It has no ability to locomote—it won’t come when you call it-but it’s attached to a moving base so that it can turn from side to side and look up and down. Co-developed by robotics researchers from the Toyohashi University of Technology, Nicobo also includes a camera for recognizing faces, multiple directional microphones for recognizing voices and turning to pay attention, touch sensors (传感器)so it knows when it’s being touched or hugged, and a light sensor so that like a cat, it can enjoy a nap in bright sunlight.
Instead of picking up laundry or cleaning your floors, Nicobo is all about providing simple companionship. So when someone pets it, the robot’s tail starts wagging in appreciation. But it can also have days when its mood isn’t so cheerful and that’s probably when it won’t think twice about farting (放屁)around you.
Nicobo can also talk, but in the beginning, it only speaks a single word. But eventually, it can speak full sentences in katakoto-the Japanese word for broken language, or baby talk. You’re never going to have a long conversation with Nicobo, but is simple sentences will help reinforce (加强) the feeling that it’s truly attentive and listening to your feelings, even if it can’t do anything about them. Sometimes that’s all a human needs.
Getting your hands on Nicobo is a little complicated. For starters, Panasonic is only planning to initially(起初) make 320 units of the little robot, with a price tag of around $ 360. But it’s handing preorders through its own crowdfunding(众筹)platform with the goal of raising 10,000,000 YEN(about $ 95,000)before production actually happens. And it looks like all the preorders for Nicobo are already claimed.
