  • 26、Now Sea World on the Gold Coast is the only dolphin park in Australia to continue keeping dolphins in captivity. This wouldn't have been possible without thousands of warm-hearted supporters being a voice for dolphins protection over many years.

In August last year, Ben Pearson, our head of campaigns in Australia and New Zealand, appeared before the NSW upper house inquiry into the use wild animals for entertainment to put forward our case for ban on captive Dolphin breeding in the state. “If a dolphin were bred today, it may still be alive in 2070. This regulation frees future dolphins from being kept in lockdown at a time when the public acceptability of keeping dolphins in captivity for entertainment is declining. As the tide turns against using marine mammals in captivity for entertainment, conversation about what will happen to the dolphins at Sea World needs to start now. First step is a ban on further breeding,” Ben Pearson said.

Major travel brands including Tripadvisor and Booking. com have already committed to stop selling tickets to dolphin shows and encounters. As well as these great changes for dolphins from the travel industry, Canada recently passed a ban on keeping dolphins and whales for entertainment. This is part of a global movement towards better treatment of these wild animals, which includes the nations of Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, India, Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland, and the UK.

Dolphins are magnificent, intelligent animals. They belong in the wild and should not be bred in captivity for entertainment. In their natural environment, dolphins swim freely in 100 square kilometres of ocean, sometimes more, but the average dolphin in captivity has a fraction of that space. Together, we can make this the last generation of dolphins in captivity.

【1】What makes Sea World on the Gold Coast the only dolphin park?

A.Dolphins take too long a time to feed.

C.Sea World on the Gold Coast has enough money.

A.More parks for dolphins will be built.

B.More dolphins will be kept in parks.

C.Wild animals will live a better life.

  • 27、Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new material that can move heat out of buildings and into space. The researchers say the material can cool buildings even on hot days. The cooling material is a very thin sheet with many layers that could be placed on a roof like solar panels(板). However, instead of turning sunlight into energy as solar panels do, the material turns heat into radiation.

Shanhui Fan is an electrical engineering professor at Stanford University. He says that the panels have a layer of material that is like sand. The panels act like a mirror. They take heat out of buildings and reflect the light from the sun. And he says both the heat and sunlight are sent 100 kilometers into outer space. "It's a structure(构造) that cools itself without electricity input, even under the sun. So, what it does is basically radiate heat to outer space and also reflect the sunlight so it doesn't get heated up by the sun. Mr. Fan says it is like having a window into space. The heat is sent directly into space without warming the air.”

He says buildings in developing countries that do not have electricity or air conditioning could use the panels. "In areas where electricity is out of reach for many people, there is a potential (潜在的) benefit for storing medicine or even food. In many of these situations, being able to reduce the temperature is important. And this would provide a way to do it.”

The researchers say the main problem is creating actual cooling systems using the high-tech panels. They say it may be possible to develop a cooling spray(喷涂) that could be used on present solid structures. They believe the cooling spray technology could be developed in the next three to five years. They say as much as 15 percent of the energy used in the United States is spent providing power to air conditioning systems.

【1】The first paragraph mainly tells us ________.

    A. living on hot days is no longer a big problem now

    B. a new material is created to cool the buildings

    C. researchers are developing new solar panels on roofs

    D. the new material is a very thin sheet with many layers

    【2】How does the panel work?

    A. It takes in the heat and cools it down.

    B. It uses a mirror to reflect the sunlight.

    C. It sends heat away right into space.

    D. It has a window to let out the heat.

【3】The new material is especially useful in areas that ________.

    A. suffer high temperature

    B. have poor air conditioning

    C. have plenty of food

    D. are short of power

【4】What can you infer from the passage?

    A. The appliance of the new panel is still under research.

    B. Some people got benefits from producing the panels.

    C. People may have problems in using the new material.

    D. The new panels may save 15 percent of the energy.

  • 28、October 15th is a Global Handwashing Day. Activities are planned in more than 20 countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap. For example, donors will give 150,000 bars of soap to schools in Ethiopia.

Experts say people around the world wash their hands, but very few use soap at so-called important moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.

Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap. Partners include the United Nations Children’s Fund, American government agencies, the World Bank and soap makers Unlever and Producer & Gamble. The organizers say all soap is equally effective at removing disease-causing germs. They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Rub for at least twenty seconds. Then rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in the air.

The partnership for Handwashing says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend in washing hands. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell. The Partnership for Handwashing also says washing with soap before eating or after using the toilet could save more lives than any vaccine or medicine. Handwashing could also prevent the spread of other disease. When people get germs on their hands, they can infect themselves by touching their eyes, noses or mouths. Then they can infect others.

【1】What’s the main purpose of this passage?

A.To explore new ways of washing hands

B.To find why washing hands carefully is so important

  • 29、After graduating from Ontario College of Teachers, I became a teacher at a one-room country school in Aldborough Township.

That first day of school as a 19-year-old female teacher was a frightening experience. It was one thing to have graduated as a successful student; it was another thing to face a classroom of little faces that were waiting for the “new teacher.” I had a classroom of 21 children of different shapes and sizes. The youngest was five going on six and the eldest was 16.

There were two doors for entrance in my school, one for the girls, one for the boys and just inside each door was a chemical toilet—no outdoor facilities for us! The heat in the building was a wood-burning furnace(火炉) down in the basement. Tending the furnace was one of my responsibilities. Luckily, I knew a bit about starting a fire, so the school didn’t burn down.

What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason. I had one Dutch family, whose father would keep the children out of school to help with the farm work. Finally, I got tired of this and sent an education officer to solve the problem. Needless to say, I was very unpopular with that father from then on, but the children came to school much more regularly!

In the classroom, the older students helped the younger ones with learning, as well as with putting on coats and hats. If someone’s lunch was forgotten, everyone shared a bit of their food. We were a family. We had good times and bad times, but we kept learning. Far beyond maths, social studies, reading, grammar and writing, we learned how to get along with each other.

I loved teaching at this small school and knew I was teaching the children about life as much as about subjects. I’d like to believe some students will have an influence on the world that will last long after I am gone.

【1】Why did the author feel her first day as a teacher frightening?

A.So many students were in class.

    B.The situations were quite different.

    C.No outdoor facilities were provided.

D.The students were curious about her.

【2】What do we know about the school?

    A.It was poorly equipped.

    B.The playground was large.

C.It was once damaged by a fire.

D.The students were of similar age.

【3】What was a headache for the author?

    A.A Dutch family hated her.

    B.The students preferred farm work.

C.The education officer offered little help.

    D.Some parents ignored children’s education.

【4】What can be inferred from Paragraph 5?

    A.They cared about each other.

B.They had an influence on the world.

    C.They laughed away bad times.

D.They did well in almost every subject.
