二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from.

Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburger. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered. “We came from Hamburger.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburger ate. Then he put each between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “ hamburgers”. Today “hamburgers” are sold in many countries around the world.

Whether this story is true or not, it is certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. The reason, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary.

1According to the writer, English is .

    A. as old as Chinese   B. older than German

    C. not so old as Chinese   D. very difficult to learn

    2Hamburg is .

    A. a kind of food   B. a round piece of beef

    C. the name of a village   D. a city in Germany

3We know from the story that .

    A. few Americans like hamburgers

    B. hamburgers were made by Germans

    C. hamburgers are made with ham

    D. hamburgers were sold all over the world about a century ago

  • 27、After having more than a few acquaintances (熟人)online, _it might come a blow to keen social networkers like Barack Obama, or even Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg himself.

According to a research, the average person has in fact twice as many online friends as physical ones. Users of social-networking sites have on average 121 online friends as compared with physical ones. The study also claims that people tend to be more open, confident and honest with their virtual friends than their “real” ones.

“For most people , the Internet is a way of keeping in touch with loved ones and friends, but for people who are isolated due to illness, it plays a more vital role, and can often act as a lifeline.” says Helen Oxley, a psychologist at Wythenshawe hospital.

“People with illnesses often rely on the Internet to facilitate(促进) friendships, since they blog and use networking sites as a way of dealing with their illness. It can foster a sense of social connection for those who frequently feel isolated, which is important to psychological well-being.”

In wider society, the ways in which friendships are formed are changing, with people recognizing that they can develop deep and meaningful connections with others that they’ve never met, and may never meet. About one in 10 people has either met their best friends online, or believes they can make lifelong friends on the Web.

The findings highlight how social introductions are also changing. Only five percent would ask for someone’s phone number, while 23 percent are now likely to ask for an email address or a full name with the intention of adding the person to their social network.

At the same time, however, a questionnaire completed by 4,427 suggests that 20 percent of parents believe their children’s education is affected by surfing the Net. They think their children are doing poorly at the school due to the amount of time they spend on non-educational websites.

  • 28、Across the world, language and history are connected. As society and tradition change, new words or phrases are created to show the present cultural understanding. Some old phrases and words simply turn into the accepted usages with their backgrounds forgotten.

One such phrase “grandfathered in” has become a common one now. Although it often makes people think of the image of a gray-haired, older gentleman, who gets out of trouble because of his age, it actually means that one person or a business has the right to refuse the new rules.

A deeper look into the first use of the phrase shows an interesting story in history. It happened in a town in the 1980s. A new law was passed there not to allow illiterates (文盲) to participate in the making of rules as they couldn’t read or write and might not help in the process. The limit was potent because except for the old and children, there were close to 30 percent of young adults in the town who had little or no education. Being strong and energetic, they made up an important part of the town’s development.

Considering that, some officers in the town didn’t readily accept the rule. Instead, they carefully gave their advice to the head of the town. At the same time, they encouraged these young adults to pass the literacy(读写能力)tests. Thus a “grandfather clause(条款)”was added to allow illiterates to participate as long as they or their grandfathers had once been participants. The clause no doubt helped remove the unfairness and benefited all.

The phrase “grandfathered in” is of course still widely used today without being limited to a certain field. But even as culture and tradition change, whether we’re aware of it or not, language has the power to hold our history.

【1】According to Paragraph 1, what has happened to some old phrase with time going?

A.They have got lost in history.

C.They are rarely used in popular culture.

【2】The phrase “grandfathered in” is used nowadays when________.

A.an old man dislikes new rules

B.a person is free from new rules

C.a business has a long history and culture

D.a businessman fails to follow the market rules

【3】What does the underlined word “potent” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Unless.

    B.Powerful.

    C.Easy.

    D.Reasonable.

【4】What does the author think of the “grandfather clause” in the history?

    A.Funny.

    B.Incorrect.

    C.Positive.

    D.Disappointing.

【5】What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?

C.History plays an important role in communication.

D.Some phrases are created to show the present culture.

  • 29、Is there a Chinese soccer team at the Qatar 2022 World Cup? No. But one can’t miss Chinese elements(元素) in and around the stadiums in this desert state. One can take a nap in a “mobile hotel” built by Chinese engineers, drink water from ponds dug by Chinese engineers, charge one’s mobile phone with electricity produced at the photovoltaic(光电的) power stations built by Chinese companies, and take a bus made in China to move between hotels and stadiums.

Did we forget something? Yes, even some stadiums are built by Chinese companies, while the souvenirs(纪念品) one can buy there, too, are made in China.

That’s how China has taken part in this World Cup and earlier events, and may do so in the upcoming ones too: by providing products and services to the athletes and audiences alike, thus impressing the world with its technology and products.

While “Made in China” has left its stamp on earlier soccer World Cups and other sports events, what makes the Qatar World Cup unique is the kind of technology China is providing. For example, the Stadium 974, built by Chinese companies, is the first movable and redeployable(可重构体系的) “green stadium”. It can recycle rainwater for future use and turn the garbage collected from the stadium into fertilizer(肥料). Besides, China has built an 800 MW photovoltaic station that continually turns the rich sunshine in the Middle East into electricity for the stadium.

Another reason that has made it possible for Chinese firms to perform well in the World Cup is that China has achieved good economic growth despite a global economic slowdown. While the whole world suffers because of the COVID-19 pandemic and other reasons, Chinese companies have largely continued to function normally.

【1】What’s the function of the first two paragraphs?

A.To lead in the topic of the text.

B.To give an overview of the text.

C.To arouse readers’ concern in the topic.

D.To summarize the the main idea of the text.

【2】What is special about China’s influence on the Qatar World Cup?

A.The services offered are the best ever.

B.The products provided are of high quality.

C.The souvenirs are designed and made in China.

    D.The technology employed are environmental-friendly.

【3】What can the underlined phrase “has left its stamp on” in para 4 be replaced by?

    A.Has been the symbol of.

    B.Has become necessary for.

    C.Has made contributions to.

    D.Has left an impression on.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Qatar: A most successful World Cup

B.You can’t miss “China green” in Qatar

C.Another World Cup without Team China

D.Qatar World Cup—“Made in China” again
