四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、FOR people who are interested in space, nothing is more exciting than the idea of living on other planets. That might be why the movie The Martian (《火星救援》) is so popular. It shows an astronaut struggling to live on Mars. But would it actually be possible to live on the Red Planet?

While the idea of living on Mars is great, the reality does not look as good. Mars does not have a friendly atmosphere for humans. There is very little oxygen there. And because of its distance from the sun, it is also very cold. The temperature on Mars can be -62 degrees on average. This is much too cold for humans.

However, scientists say it might be possible to live there even without a good atmosphere. Daytime on Mars is almost the same as Earth’s. It means there’s enough sunlight to grow plants inside safe buildings. However, they would have to grow in soil from Earth. Mars does not have a strong enough atmosphere to stop the radiation coming from space, which makes it dangerous to grow things in the soil.

The radiation is also bad for our health. If we want to live there healthily, we need to build our homes under the ground or within the rocks on the planet. This would protect humans from the radiation and also some heat.

When could we actually live on Mars? NASA is hoping to make some progress within the next 20 years.

【1】The film The Martian is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to _____.

    A. introduce the topic of living on Mars

    A. Its atmosphere is not good for humans.

    B. It has very little oxygen.

    C. It’s colder than Earth.

    D. It’s closer to the sun than Earth is.

【3】It’s possible to grow plants on Mars because _____.

    A. there is enough sunlight

    B. the soil is good on Mars

    C. it has a good underground atmosphere

    D. its temperature changes very little

【4】What does Para. 4 mainly talk about?

    A. What problems the radiation causes.

    B. How to avoid bad conditions on Mars.

    C. How to build homes on Mars.

    D. How to protect Mars.

  • 26、   The term “multitasking” was firstly used to describe a computer’s ability to do several tasks at one time. For many people, multitasking has become a way of life and even a key to success. Although checking e-mails while talking on a phone and reading the newspaper may be second nature for some people, multitasking can sometimes make us less productive(富有成效的), rather than more. Studies show that too much multitasking may bring anxiety and memory loss.

In order to multitask, the brain uses an area known as the prefrontal cortex(前额叶脑皮层). A research from volunteers performing multiple tasks shows that as they move from task to task, this front part of the brain actually takes a moment of rest between tasks. You may have experienced a prefrontal cortex “moment of rest” yourself if you’ve ever dialed(拨电话) a phone number and suddenly forgotten who you dialed when the line is answered. What probably happened is that between the dialing and the answering, your mind moved to another thought or task, and then took that “moment” to come back. The research has also shown that for many volunteers, job efficiency(效率) drops while multitasking, compared to when they perform only one task at a time.

Multitasking is easy when at least one of the tasks requires little thought. Most people don’t find it difficult to eat and read the newspaper at the same time. However, when two or more attention-requiring tasks are tried at the same time, people sometimes make mistakes.

We often don’t remember things as well when we’re trying to manage several details at the same time. We may not notice new information coming in, so it never makes it into our memory. That is one of the main reasons we forget people’s names – even sometimes right after they have introduced themselves. Multitasking can also affect(影响) our relationships. If someone checks their e-mail while on the phone with a friend, they may appear absent-minded or disinterested. It can also cause that person to miss key information being passed on to them.

1Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “anxiety”?

    A.Stress B.Development C.Death D.Confidence

2The writing purpose of this passage is to________.

A.describe the problems of multitasking B.discover the secrets of multitasking

C.tell the stories about multitasking D.explain the importance of multitasking

3What can we learn about multitasking?

A.It is a way of life and the only key to success. B.It can be done easily by smart people.

C.It helps build a better relationship between friends. D.It has a close connection to our brain.

4What can we infer(推断) from the passage?

A.Multitasking helps people remember things better.

B.More mistakes are made when tasks require little thought.

C.People get low job efficiency while managing several details at the same time.

D.People forgetting who to dial need to have a good rest.

  • 27、   You may see some herons () in the park using bread or insects as a tool to catch fish. This is just one of the ways in which birds have changed their living habits because of humans. Now, a new study has found that birds that are able to change their behaviors in this way are less likely to die out. These changes may include adding new food to their diet, developing new hunting skills, or living in a new environment. These new behaviors have long been considered advantages in avoiding extinction(灭绝).

To test this on a world level, scientists studied reports of new behaviors among bird species. The study includes more than 3,800 new behaviors among8,600 species of birds. They concluded that the more new hunting skills the birds master, the larger population they will have. In other words, extinction risk reduces as the number of new skills increases.

However, it is stressed that innovation (革新) can only protect birds from changes in their living place, but not from over-hunting or harm from other species. It should be noticed that some animals are very dangerous to some birds: snakes can attack little birds, some hungry mice stole birds' eggs. Above all, humans often mean the greatest danger to birds. They always take up too much space, cut down millions of trees and even cause various kinds of pollution.

This shows that, unlike what is usually believed, the ability to innovate protects animals from some but not all of the rapid changes in the environment.

1Why do birds change their living habits?

A.Because they like their new habits. B.Because they want to use tools.

C.Because humans ask them to do that D.Because human activities affect them.

2According to the passage, birds that ____________ may not die out soon.

A.feed on fewer kinds of food B.have a little food every day

C.get enough food in some new ways D.dislike to live in a noisy place

3Which of the following shows the result of the study in Paragraph 2?

    A. B.

    C. D.

4Which paragraph shows the harm from other species to birds?

    A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2. C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4.

5What's the main idea of the passage?

A.Humans often help birds to change themselves.

B.Innovation in hunting skills has an effect on birds' living.

C.The ability of innovation can protect birds from all danger.

D.Birds can change their hunting skills in the new environment.
