21、People have always been dreaming of going to the moon. As long as the year 1901, H. G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book vividly describing a trip to the moon. On landing there, the explorers discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. Words failed to express their surprise when they spotted so many “moon people”. The “moon people” felt even more surprised. “Why,” they asked, “are you traveling to outer space when you don’t even use your inner space?”
H. G. Wells could only imagine a travel to the moon. In 1969, human beings really left their footsteps on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the “moon people” asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.
Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The “Channel”, a tunnel connecting England and France, is now complete.
But what about underground cities? Japan’s Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems, called “Alice Cities”. The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping, and so on. A solar dome (太阳能穹顶) would cover the whole city.
Supporters of underground development argue that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth’s space. The space, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H. G. Wells’ “moon people” would second it. Would you?

22、Do you ever see people building houses? To build a house, you need workers. They use their hands, tools and machines to put things together. Building the International Space Station is the same. The difference is that the workers are astronauts. They walk in space and use robots’ arms and hands to do the work.
In the space station, astronauts are comfortable. The temperature there is about 21℃. But outside of the station, it can be too hot or cold for people. In the sunlight, it’s about 120℃. In the shadow (暗处) of the station, it’s about -85℃. So when astronauts walk in space, they have to wear heavy clothes—spacesuits.
These suits also keep astronauts safe from flying rubbish in space. Each time people go into space, they leave rubbish there. So astronauts should be careful because there’s a lot of rubbish, and some rubbish goes many times as fast as a plane!
Space walking is not easy, and it can be dangerous. So getting ready for it takes a lot of time to learn. Astronauts will need to do 160 space walks to finish their work in the space station. That will take about 1,900 man-hour work.
【1】How do the astronauts build the space station?

23、What is love? Love can be a flower, a bottle of water, or a bus stop. Not long ago, a loving temporary (临时的) bus stop in Changde, Hunan Province, came to the attention of the public. It is a bus stop for one child.
Xuanxuan is a seven-year-old boy. His mother passed away when he was three years old. Since then, he has lived with his grandmother. When Xuanxuan started school, his grandmother took him to school every day. But shortly afterward, she couldn’t do that for health reasons. So now, Xuanxuan has to go to school himself. His home is a little far from the bus stop, and the road is narrow and busy. It is very dangerous for Xuanxuan to walk alone. Once, Xuanxuan even lost his way when going home. His grandmother was worried about him. Luckily, a group of warm-hearted people lent a hand. They wrote to the Changde Public Transport Company and hoped it could set up a temporary bus stop for this young boy. After a careful discussion, the company finally set up this temporary bus stop.
“My grandmother doesn’t have to walk so long to bring me an umbrella on rainy days. She can wait for me at our door,” Xuanxuan said happily at the bus stop.
