21、Thirteen years later, the memory of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake is still fresh. A new movie about the disaster(灾难) came out on May 15.
The film Wonder in the Temple is based on a true story. When the earthquake happened, most of the buildings in Shilang, Sichuan were destroyed(损毁). But a Buddhist temple(寺庙) stood and offered protection to many pregnant(怀孕的) women. In the temple, these women gave birth to 108 babies.
“After many people passed away, there were newborns,” said the film’s director Kong Jiahuan. “These 108 new lives brought hope to people who experienced the disaster.”
The film shows many touching moments during the disaster. At that time, some people worried that allowing pregnant women to stay would break the monks’ taboo(僧律). The abbot (住持) from the temple said, “The biggest taboo for us is to leave people in the lurch.” After the earthquake, the mothers made a robe for the abbot with 108 pieces of cloth from each of the babies’ clothes.
Ten years later, the film team came to Shifang. Again, the city showed its kindness. Over 4, 000 people there volunteered to appear in the movie, staying up all night in the rain to shoot. “No one complained. Everyone was serious about the filming,” Kong said.
“We wanted to make a film that helps people see that we need to understand each other and support each other in difficult times,” Kong added.
