  • 27、As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.

Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains(窗帘) seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination (想象) would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the "enemy(敌人) " would not discover me.

Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn't let the leaders out of my sight.

Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.

One of the processes(过程) growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

1The author had ________kind(s) of fears when she was a child.

    A. one      B. two

    C. three   D. none

2_________ would scare the author at night.

    A. Streetlight and car lights

    B. Wild animals and enemies

    C. Moving curtains and wind

    D. Strange sights and sounds

3When she went to some other places, she would _________.

    A. walk away without others

    B. take a bus by herself

    C. follow others closely

    D. make sure not to take a wrong bus

4Which of the following would be possibly true when she was a child?

    A. She was usually popular among people.

    B. She was always the leader of the others.

    C. She always' got poor grades.

    D. She was not at all liked by others.

5The underlined word "overcome" means "_________" in Chinese.

    A. 接受   B. 忍受

    C. 信服    D. 克服

五、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 28、根据下面短文内容,在短文的空格处填上一个恰当的词,使短文完整、通顺。

Does speaking on the phone make you nervous?

Speaking with people on the phone is becoming less common these days. Many people prefer to use email or messaging apps when they need to communicate with someone. But sometimes it’s hard to 【1】 making a phone call. But this simple act can actually be an unpleasant experience for some people. Their hearts may race at the very thought. If this sounds familiar (熟悉的) to you, you might be among those with telephobia—the 【2】 of speaking on the phone.

Telephobia is a form of social anxiety. People who feel perfectly comfortable in social situations may also experience telephobia. When 【3】 face to face, we have lots of facial expressions that help each other follow the conversation. This is not the case over the phone. Very often the idea of speaking on the phone makes some people so scared that they will freeze up or lose control of the conversation. 【4】, there are things that they can do to stop this fear.

One thing that those with telephobia can do 【5】 making a call is smiling. It may sound silly, but smiling can help you feel more 【6】. It won’t get rid of (消除) the anxiety altogether, but it will take the edge off (使……缓解) it.

Similarly, imagining how the call will go before you make it can also help things go more smoothly. Just run through a positive conversation in your head. That will make you feel less nervous and may help you predict any possible problems.

Well, you don’t always have to pick up the phone at once. There’s nothing wrong with calling the person back 【7】 when you feel more comfortable. So the next time your phone starts ringing, remember—speaking on the phone doesn’t have to make you nervous. The important thing is to realize your fear and take steps to deal with 【8】. Over time, you will learn that using the phone need not be a terrifying experience.
