四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Just hearing the name of the great white shark makes people afraid. In fact they have more to fear from us than we do from them. For many years lots of great white sharks were killed.

But thanks to people’s efforts the population of these sharks is rising again in the US according to two recent studies.

Why is their growing population something to celebrate? Great white sharks play an important role in the ocean ecosystem. As the biggest predators they help keep the population of other creatures from growing too large. If the population of an species(物种) gets too big it will affect the food chain.

Although they are very important great white sharks had been hunted for their meat and fins for a long time. In 1997 a law was passed in the US to stop the hunting of great white sharks. Gradually the numbers of sharks started to increase.

The law wasn’t the only thing that has helped great white sharks. Environmental protection groups have also played a part. The research group OCEARCH puts an electronic device(装置) on a shark’s fin and then tracks(追踪) its movements. Just as important they let the public follow each shark as it travels the world’s oceans. OCEARCH also gives each shark a name. The group’s most famous shark is a shark named Katharine. Thousands of people have tracked Katharine’s movements on the website. This helps people see sharks in a new way --- not just as the dangerous killers seen in movies. Learning about sharks makes people want to do more to protect them.

1 What is the good news mentioned in the second paragraph?

    A. People can track sharks’ movements on a website.

    B. The population of great white sharks is increasing.

    C. Some new kinds of fish were found in the ocean.

    D. Two recent studies show that great white sharks are not dangerous.

2Why are great white sharks important to the ocean ecosystem?

    A. Their meant and fins are very valuable.

    B. They can keep other ocean species away from danger.

    C. Other Ocean species cannot live without great white sharks.

    D. They can stop the population of other ocean species getting too big.

3The underlined word “predators” in the third paragraph probably means “_________” in Chinese.

    A. 捕食性动物 B. 素食性动物

    C. 海洋生物 D. 陆地生物

4Which of the following statements is NOT true about OCEARCH?

    A. It works hard to make people want to do more to protect sharks.

    B. It helps thousands of people find their pets.

    C. Its most famous shark is called Katharine.

    D. If fixes a small device on a shark’s fin.

  • 25、   Years ago, I went to visit one of my dad's friends with him. The host poured a cup of tea and placed it in front of us. Then he thought of something suddenly and hurried into the inner room, leaving the thermos (热水瓶)on the table.

My dad remained sitting still in the living room while I was looking at the flowers outside the window. My father just about to take his cup when the crash came, right there in the sitting room. Something was hopelessly broken.

It was the thermos, which had fallen to the floor. I looked over my shoulder suddenly, shocked, staring. It was mysterious! neither of us had touched it, not even a little bit. Undoubtedly, it hadn't stood steadily when the host placed it on the table. But it hadn't fallen then.

The crash of the thermos caused the host, with a box of sugar cubes in his hand, to rush back from the inner room. He looked at the steaming floor and said at once. “It doesn't matter! It doesn't matter!” I thought Dad would explain something about that. But I just heard his words, “Sorry I touched it and it fell.” I was puzzled and thought Dad was a little bit stupid.

“It doesn't matter,” the host said again.

Later, when we left the house, I said, “Daddy, did you touch it?”

“No. But it stood so close to me.”

“But you didn't touch it. I saw your reflection in the window. You were sitting perfectly still.” Father laughed. “Then how would you explain the cause of its fall?”

“The thermos fell by itself. The floor is uneven. It wasn't steady (平稳的)when he put it there. Daddy, why did you say that?”

“That won't do, girl. It sounds more acceptable when I say I knocked it down. Sometimes, the more you defend something, the less people can accept it.”

I was lost in silence for a while. Then I said, “You can explain it only this way?”

“Only this way.” my father said.

I didn't understand my dad's words at that time. But now I do---the host has been Dad's life-long friend. Maybe it was wise for Dad to take the responsibility in such a situation.

1We can know that the host ________.

A.didn't expect the author and her father to visit him

B.poured two cups of tea for them and left

C.was a person who easily got angry

2The thermos fell to the ground perhaps because ________.

A.the author's father knocked it down B.the table wasn't smooth at all

C.the host hadn't placed it on the table well D.the author touched it by accident

3The author was puzzled because she wondered ________.

A.how the host knew the fact in the inner room

B.why the host behaved so politely

C.why her father didn't tell the truth

D.how her father broke the thermos

4What can we learn from the passage?

A.The host was angry with them because of the accident

B.The author's father didn't think his friend would believe the truth

C.The author understood why her father said so from the beginning

D.The host didn't want to make them feel embarrassed though he knew the truth

5What does the passage mainly want to tell us?

A.It's no need to find out truth around us.

B.If we defend ourselves, people will believe us.

C.Children should be educated to tell lies.

D.Sometimes, to take the responsibility is another kind of wisdom.
