25、 Imagine having an ear made out of an apple. It seems like a crazy idea from a horror movie. But it could happen in the near future.
Canadian biophysicist, Andrew Pelling used an apple to grow a human ear. He thinks fruit and vegetables can be used to cheaply repair human body parts in the future.
Scientists have been trying to grow organs( 器官) in labs to replace our old ones. But it is a hard Job. For example, liver cells( 肝细胞)can grow in a lab, but the cells still need things like blood vessels( 血管) to actually work. These things have to grow inside a scaffold(支架) In the past, scientists have used manmade materials, animal parts and even dead people as scaffolds. But that has proved to be difficult and expensive.
Pelling and his team, however, found the apple to be a cheap and easy to use scaffold.
They first out an apple into the shape of an ear. Then they used a special way to take out the apple’s cells and make it a scaffold. The team then added human cells to the apple and watched it grow
You can implant these scaffolds into the body, and the body will send in cells and a blood supply and actually keep these things alive, “Pelling said during a Ted Talk speech.
The team put the apple scaffold inside a living mouse and the mouse’s cells slowly took over the pieces of apple.
Now Pelling is thinking of other fruit, plants or vegetables to use,
He says that the shape of flower petals could be perfect for repairing skin. And asparagus(芦苇) could fix a broken spine(脊柱).
Now, Pelling and his team are trying hard to put these crazy ideas into reality
【1】Pelling’s idea of manmade ear seems crazy because he used ________ as scaffolds.
A.animal parts B.dead people
C.manmade materials D.ordinary apples
【2】The underlined word “implant” in Paragraph 7 probably means ________.

【3】Which is the right order of making an ear out of an apple according to the passage
a. Put the apple scaffold inside a mouse.
b. Add human cells to the apple scaffold.
c. Cut an apple into the shape of an ear.
d. Make the apple ear a scaffold.
e. Take out the apple’s cells in a special way.
A.abcde B.bedae C.cedba D.cdaeb
【4】From the last three paragraphs, we can infer that Pelling will experiment with other fruit, plants or vegetables ________.
A.to make human ears B.to repair burnt skin
C.to fix a broken spine D.to make human body parts
26、Dear Audrey,
You are much older now, and hopefully wiser, although sometimes that’s not the case. You have probably forgotten about me.
I’m 12-year-old you feeling terribly nervous and stressed, hating online learning, in this horrible pandemic... I could go on and on. Does this bring any memory back to you?
Anyway, maybe there are time machines in the time where you are, but there aren’t any here, so I’m doing the next best thing: I’m writing you a letter that I hope you read every year on New Year’s Day, or New Year’s Eve.
I’ve come from 2020 to remind you not to forget. I’m sitting on my bed right now, tears still on my face from a fight with my mom ( I love her more than anything or anyone, but we’ve spent too much time together), and aware of the light blue masks hanging on the hooks next to the door in my kitchen. In a way, it still feels like March, when this whole crazy thing started. I’m sick of it.
I am begging you to remember. I didn’t get to spend Thanksgiving with my beloved grandparents, when I’d been waiting so long to act normally(正常地) with them and pod up. Now, it looks like I won’t be spending Christmas with them normally either. In America (where I live), the Coronavirus numbers are higher than they’ve ever been. I am hoping and am going to pray (祈祷) for a Christmas miracle (奇迹), but I have my doubts because I hoped for an Easter miracle and that didn’t happen.
I am having a hard time and would do anything to get out of 2020 and this pandemic, to see my friends and family normally. You are able to do that. You have what I want so badly. So please, I strongly advise you to enjoy your life, your friends, your family, your experiences.
Remember — everything is replaceable and unimportant, but people are the only true thing that matter in this modern-day world.
Love your life, and be filled with joy this year.
Sincerely,
You, age 12, Audrey in 2020, the Pandemic Year.

If you have ever had trouble doing things you should do or would like to do, you have experienced procrastination(拖延). When you procrastinate, instead of w【1】 on important meaningful tasks, you find yourself performing meaningless activities.
If you are a procrastinator, perhaps you spend lots of time watching TV, playing video games, eating, cleaning or walking back and forth through the room. Afterwards, you feel powerless and have the f【2】 of guilt and trouble. Once again, you end up doing n【3】. Sound familiar?
Lazy people don’t do anything and are just fine with it. Procrastinators, however, want to actually do something but can’t force themselves to s【4】.
Another fact about procrastination is that it is d【5】 from relaxation. Relaxing provides you with energy. But procrastination makes you not energetic. The less energy you have, the greater the chances of you putting off your responsibilities(责任), and, once more, you will a【6】 nothing.
My dad always used to say, “Peter, you need to learn how to give yourself orders.” I would always answer, “I tell myself what to do, but I just don’t listen to.”
Most likely, the main reason is self-regulation(自我调节). It is the ability to actively c【7】 your moods. The more developed this ability is, the more often you will do what you tell yourself to do.
Good news is that it is possible to have self-regulation by t【8】. You need to begin by setting the bar(标准) as low as possible. Creating habits isn’t about quantity; it’s about small steps and regular repetition.
Once you learn a new habit, you can exercise your willpower muscle. As you s【9】 raise the bar, your willpower will gain strength day by day.
Gradual changes are more pleasant than sudden, great changes. T【10】, bigger success can be made.
