二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   People across the world use Airnbn to offer their homes to travelers usually for a nightly fee. The home-sharing service provides some people a way to make extra money while they work other jobs.

The company announced recently that one of its most popular professions among American Airbnb hosts is teaching. The information came from an Airbnb study to find out what industries its American hosts work in. the study found that almost 10 percent of U.S. Airbnb hosts in 2017 identified themselves as teachers or in the field of education. The home-sharing service estimated it has about 45,000 active teacher hosts in America. In addition, the study says there are an estimated 75,000 other hosts living in households with a teacher.

American teacher hosts earned more than $160 million dollars from Airbnb in 2017, the company said. That includes about $54 million earned during the summer alone. The average amount earned by teacher hosts individually was $6,500 in 2017. The study did not provide data from hosts about why they choose to become part of Airbnb. But the company noted that many teachers in America face difficult economic situations. Airbnb says additional earnings from hosting can help.

The U.S. Department of Education reported this year that 94 percent of public school teachers said they had spent their own money on some classroom supplies in the 2015-2016 school year. It also reported that the average pay for public school teachers in 2015-2016 was lower than in the 1990-1991 school year when the inflation rate was considered. Some states had even higher rates of teacher hosts than Airbnb’s estimated national average.

Airbnb spokesman Christopher Nulty told The Atlantic magazine that the home-sharing industry was not a total solution for the current problems facing many teachers. But he said he thought Airbnb could be an “important tool” to help teachers make extra money and give them “the respect and dignity” they had earned.

The report on the number of teacher hosts comes as Airbnb continues to face opposition by activists and officials in some areas. U.S. critics of the company say the service is driving up rental market prices in several cities. Elected officials in some areas have proposed or approved rules to limit the influence of the service. Hotel companies have also protested that the business presents unfair competition.

1Teachers choose to become part of Airbnb because of _____.

A.their economic difficulty B.respect and dignity

C.the lack of classroom supplies D.the high rental price

2Airbnb is opposed by some people or organizations except _____.

    A.officials B.the Department of Education

    C.activists D.hotel companies

3We can learn from the passage that Airbnb _____.

    A.can solve teachers’ economic problems.

B.drives up rental market prices in most cities

C.helps teachers find a new job

D.might be an “important tool” for teachers to make money

    4The writer’s attitude towards Airbnb is ______.

    A.approved B.indifferent

    C.neutral D.opposed

  • 22、The biggest house of cards, the longest tongue, and of course, the tallest man: these are among the thousands of records logged in the famous Guinness Book of Records. Created in 1955 after a debate concerning Europe's fastest game bird, what began as a marketing tool sold to pub landlords to promote Guinness, an Irish drink, became the bestselling copyright title of all time (a category that excludes books such as the Bible and the Koran). In time, the book would sell 120 million copies in over 100 countries— quite a leap from its humble beginnings.

In its early years, the book set its sights on satisfying man's inborn curiosity about the natural world around him. Its two principal fact finders, twins Norris and Ross McWhirter, moved wildly around the globe to collect facts. It was their task to find and document aspects of life that can be sensed or observed, things that can be quantified or measured. But not just any things. They were only interested in superlatives: the biggest and the best. It was during this period that some of the remarkable Guinness Records were documented, answering such questions as "What is the brightest star?" and "What is the biggest spider?"

Once aware of the public's thirst for such knowledge, the book's authors began to branch out to cover increasingly doubtful, little-known facts. They started documenting human achievements as well. A forerunner for reality television, the Guinness Book gave people a chance to become famous for accomplishing odd, often pointless tasks. Records were set in 1955 for consuming 24 raw eggs in 14 minutes and in 1981 for the fastest solving of a Rubik's Cube (which took a mere 38 seconds). In 1979 a man yodeled non-stop for ten and a quarter hours.

In its latest appearance, the book has found a new home on the internet. No longer restricted to the limits of physical paper, the Guinness World Records website contains seemingly innumerable facts concerning such topics as the most powerful combustion engine, or the world's longest train. What is striking, however, is that such facts are found sharing a page with the record of the heaviest train to be pulled with a beard. While there is no denying that each of these facts has its own, individual temptation, the latter represents a significant deviation from the education-oriented facts of earlier editions. Perhaps there is useful knowledge to be obtained regarding the tensile strength of a bread, but this seems to cater to an audience more interested in seeking entertainment than education.

Originating as a simple bar book, the Guinness Book of Records has evolved over decades to provide insight into the full range of modern life. And although one may be more likely now to learn about the widest human mouth than the highest number of casualties in a single battle of the Civil War, the Guinness World Records website offers a telling glimpse into the future of fact-finding and record-recording.

【1】As used in paragraph 2, which is the best definition for empirical?

    A.able to catch attention

    B.derived from experience

    C.recorded for nature

    D.easy to gain

【2】According to the author, the most significant difference between older editions of the Guinness Book of Records and the new Guinness World Records website involves________.

A.a departure from book sales a promotion tool to the local bars

B.an end to the use of facts as a means to promote Guinness

C.a shift in focus from educational to entertaining material

D.a move from fact-finding to the recording of achievements

【3】It can be inferred that the author most likely believes reality television to be________.

    A.Sympathetic

    B.idiotic

    C.invaluable

    D.shallow

【4】Which of the following statements would best serve as the headline for this passage?

A.The encyclopedia of the extremes reflects the changing interests of modern society.

B.A book of simple origins makes it to the top as sales total a staggering 120 million copies.

C.The Guinness World Records website proves itself a valuable resource for insight into the full spectrum of modern life.

D.Where other books fall short, the index of superlative sciences never ceases to amaze.

  • 23、   Teacher burnout(倦怠) and student stress may be linked, according to a University of British Columbia study. The study is the first of its kind to examine the connection between teacher burnout and students' cortisol levels(可体松水平), which are a biological indicator of stress.

Researchers collected saliva(唾液)samples from over 400 elementary school children and tested their cortisol levels. They found that in classrooms in which teachers experienced more burnout, or feelings of emotional exhaustion, students' cortisol levels were elevated. Higher cortisol levels in elementary school children have been linked to learning difficulties as well as mental health problems.

"This suggests that stress spreading might be taking place in the classroom among students and their teachers," said Eva Oberle, the study's lead author. Indeed, the relationship between student stress and teacher burnout is a chicken and egg question. It is unknown what came first - elevated cortisol or teacher burnout. We consider the connection between student and teacher stress a cyclical problem in the classroom."

Oberle said a stressful classroom climate could be a result of inadequate support for teachers, which may impact teachers' ability to effectively manage their students. A poorly managed classroom can contribute to students' needs not being met and increasing stress. This could be reflected in elevated cortisol levels in students.

Alternatively, stress could originate from students, who may be more challenging to teach because of increases in anxiety, behavioural problems, or special needs. In this scenario, teachers could feel overwhelmed and report higher levels of burnout.

"Our study is a reminder of the systemic issues facing teachers and educators as classroom sizes increase and supports for teachers are cut," said Oberle.

"It is clear from a number of recent research studies that teaching is one of the most stressful professions, and that teachers need adequate resources and support in their jobs in order to battle burnout and alleviate stress in the classroom," said UBC education professor Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, the study's co-author and director of HELP. "If we do not support teachers, we risk the collateral damage(附带损害) of students.

1Which is the best title of the passage?

A.How to Relieve Stress in the class

B.A puzzling Question of Egg and Chicken

2Paragraph 4 and paragraph 5 are intended to make it clear that___________.

A.teacher burnout may be cause of the elevated cortisol levels in students

B.the connection between students and teacher stress is a cyclical problem

C.students with higher stress level are more likely to have learning difficulties

D.High cortisol level indicates high level of burnout.

  • 24、   When talking about the economics of online publishing, the first thing to remember is that job No. 1 isn’t to get the news to you. Rather, it is to monetize you, by selling you off, in real time, to the highest bidder. This happens every time you click on a link, before the page has even started to load on your phone. Once upon a time, if you and I both visited the same web page at the same time using the same web browser, we would end up seeing the same thing. Today, however, an almost unthinkably enormous ecosystem of scripts and cookies and often astonishingly personal information is used to show you a set of brand messages and sales links which are tailored almost uniquely to you.

That ecosystem raises important questions about privacy—the way that the minute you look at a pair of shoes online, for instance, they then start following you around every other website you visit for weeks. But whether or not you value your privacy, you are damaged, daily, by the sheer weight of all that technology.

Online ads have never got less annoying over time, and you can be sure that mobile ads are going to get more annoying as well, once Silicon Valley has worked out how to better identify who you are. The move to greater privacy protections might help slow the pace with which such technologies are adopted. But there’s no realistic hope that websites will actually improve from here. If you want to avoid the dreadful experience of the mobile web, you’ll only have one choice—which is to start reading your articles natively, in the Facebook or Apple News app. But it won’t be Facebook and Apple who killed the news brands. It’ll be ad tech.

1What will happen if two people click on the same link today?

A.They will immediately get the news that they want.

B.They will see the same thing whenever they browse.

C.They will see different brand messages and sales links.

D.They will be recommended to the same bidder.

2Why can the online ads send you the links unique to you?

A.Because the ecosystem knows who you are.

B.Because they know how to identify who you are.

C.Because you don’t care about your privacy.

D.Because you always use the same web browser.

3How could we protect our privacy against mobile ads?

A.By slowing the pace with such technologies.

    B.By improving the website functions.

C.By stopping using the mobile phones.

D.By reading articles in specific apps.

4What’s the author’s attitude to the ad tech?

    A.Negative. B.Positive. C.Unconcerned. D.Optimistic.
