二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Earth is lighted up by bioluminescence(生物发光)but, for many of us,seeing the natural phenomenon is a rare treat:Catching the glow(光)of a firefly or witnessing a dolphin swimming through electric blue waters is a thrill.

Researchers are currently engineering glowing flowers and decorative plants that can cast a green light onto our living rooms. Observing plant’s health via its glow can be a way to instantly measure its health, and the side effect is anybody who wants a healthy glowing plant in their living room can have one.

A study published on Monday in Nature Biotechnology shows that this goal is well on its way to being a reality. The study authors announce they’ve created a method that causes plants to glow much brighter, and for a longer period of time, than previous efforts.Plants adapted by this method should be available for purchase within a few years.

The research was conducted through a teamwork between three scientific institutions and Plant,a biotech startup in Moscow. When this team examined a poisonous mushroom, they discovered that caffeic acid is responsible for its bioluminescence. In this new study, the team employed that information and inserted(嵌入)enzymes(酶) —which are specific to the mushroom —into the DNA of tobacco plants. In turn, the enzymes were able to interact with the caffeic acid in the tobacco plants, and cause them to glow both in the dark and in the daylight.

This method, the scientists claimed, made the plants 10 times brighter than previous efforts and the continuous light production didn’t harm the health of the plants. Interestingly, the light decreased as the leaves aged—but it also increased when the leaves were damaged. In turn, the team suggested this method could also help other researchers monitor plant responses to various pressures and changes in the environment. If a plant is short of water or a hungry sheep is harming a plant, bioluminescence could warn of this damage before it’s too late.

【1】How can people quickly identify a decorative flower’s health condition?

    A.By monitoring its glow.

    B.By making it greener.

C.By testing the chemicals in it.

D.By putting it in the living room.

【2】What can we expect of the adapted glowing plants?

A.They may take the place of lamps.

B.They will appear on the market.

C.They can light up a whole living room.

D.They glow less bright than previous efforts.

【3】What did the team do with the mushroom in the new study?

A.They inserted caffeic acid into it.

B.They made it give out brighter light.

C.They grew it on the tobacco plants farm.

D.They put its enzymes into the tobacco plants.

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Warning of potential damage from glowing plants.

B.Increasing light when glowing plants receive damage.

C.Effects of continuous light production on the glowing plants.

D.Benefits of combining specific enzymes with caffeic acid in plants.

  • 23、At least 12 other murders since 1997 have been linked to an addiction to violent video games. This year, the parents of a 14-year-old murder victim in the UK blamed the killer’s addiction to the game Manhunt, causing a government review of legislation(立法)to protect children.

But is there any scientific evidence that mere games can make children and young adults more aggressive, or possibly have the desire to murder? There is no doubt children are being exposed to more games violence than ever: around a quarter of all games released in the US contain some violence. And the violence is becoming more obvious as increases in computing power make the games look ever more realistic.

Psychologists think there may be many reasons why violent games are more harmful to children than violent movies. Firstly, players are actively involved in violence, and may begin to use weapons as second nature. Secondly, violent games provide repetitive aggressive experiences that are rewarded by more killing.

Many studies have shown that people who play violent games regularly are more likely to show high levels of aggression. For instance, in 2000, Craig Anderson of Iowa State University in Ames and his colleague Karen Dill found that people who played violent games were more likely to admit to aggressive behaviour, including attacks or robberies.

Earlier this year, Krahe and her colleague Ingrid Miller reported a study of 13 to 14-year-old children. More than half had played games recommended only for over-18s. The more violent the games they played, the more they considered physical aggression to be acceptable. Other authors in the same edition report that children who play violent games more likely to argue with teachers and fight with others.

Experimental studies have also pointed out a possible link. In one, Anderson and Dill asked a group of students to play a violent game, Wolfenstein 3D, while another group played the non-violent Myst. Those who played the violent game were faster to react to aggressive words flashed on screen and appeared more aggressive.

The issue is controversial, however. Jeffrey Goldstein, a psychologist at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and a consultant to some video games publishers, agrees that there is good evidence that children, who are exposed to violent media, including video games, are more aggressive. But he warns it might not be a simple case of cause and effect: aggressive kids might be most attracted to violent games.

1What will be probably discussed in the paragraph following the passage?

    A. Further research on the harm of violent games.

    B. The results of more experimental studies.

    C. Ways to protect children from violent games.

    D. Further research on the advantage of violent games.

2Violent games are more harmful to children than violent movies because ________.

    A. violent movies are not so attractive to children

    B. the viewers can’t take part in violent movies

    C. violent movies are not popular with children

    D. children can win awards in violent games

3What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. There are at least 12 murders in 1997 linking with violent games.

    B. Children who play computer games often quarrel with their teachers and parents.

    C. The more violent games kids play, the more aggressive behaviors they are involved in.

    D. The number of violence is increasing as a result of violent video games.

4What would be the best title for the passage?

    A. Games and Murder   B. Should Computer Games Become Lifelike?

    C. How to Play Violent Games   D. Violent Games or Non-violent Games?

  • 24、More than 140 sign languages are used today, primarily by deaf communities around the world. Like spoken languages, each sign language has its own grammar, vocabulary and other special features. For example, American Sign Language is unintelligible(无法了解的)to British Sign language. In fact, American Sign language has more in common with French Sign Language, largely because French educators played a key role in helping get deaf schools founded in the United States during the 19th century.

There haven’t been a lot of comparisons of sign languages. University of Texas, Austin linguist Justin Powers and his colleagues aim to address that information gap. In order to study the question of sign language evolution, they first collected a database of manual alphabets from dozens of different sign languages around the world. So a manual alpha-bet is kind of a subsystem within a sign language that is used to represent a written language. And there’s a hand shape that corresponds to each letter.

To uncover relationships between the alphabets% the researchers used the same methods that biologists use to figure out relationships between different species, based on their DNA. The methods grouped sign languages in this study into five main European lineages(谱系). And those were Austrian origin, British origin, French origin, Spanish and Swedish. Power says manual alphabets from Austria, France and Spain could date back to one-handed manual alphabets from 16th- and 17th-century Spain. But each of those lineages evolved independently of each other.

The study also confirmed the French origins of American Sign Language and those of other countries, including Mexico, Brazil and the Netherlands. Surprisingly, the Austrian manual alphabet influenced sign languages as far away as Russia. But while this lineage has largely died out, remains of it live on in Icelandic Sign language today.

Power says future research comparing the vocabularies of different sign languages could provide even more clues about how they’ve changed over time. Understanding how sign languages evolve would tell us a lot about the way that language, in general, evolves.

【1】What can we know about American Sign Language?

A.It was created by French educators.

B.It is less related to French Sign language.

C.It was further developed before the 19th century.

A.Every letter means a hand gesture.

B.It is used to replace the written language.

C.Every letter is the same as the normal alphabet.

D.It is used together with the shape of mouth.
