二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The human brain is the most complex and poorly understood biological structure known to man. Our human brain is relatively large for our body size and wrinkled in comparison to other animals’ brains. Across species, brain size and wrinkle number is related to intelligence.

University of Copenhagen researchers have made an incredible discovery seeking to learn more about the mammalian (哺乳动物的) brain. A vital enzyme, a special material, allows brain signals to be transmitted or transported. The enzyme is randomly turning on and off, even taking hours-long “breaks from work.” These discoveries could have a significant impact on our understanding of the brain and the development of medicines. The discovery is featured on the cover of Nature.

Millions of neurons (神经元) are constantly communicating with one another, shaping thoughts and memories and allowing us to move our bodies at will. Neurotransmitters are transported from one neuron to another by a unique enzyme when two neurons meet to exchange a message.

This process is necessary for neuronal communication as well as the survival of all complex organisms (extremely small living things). Until now, researchers all over the world assumed that these enzymes were constantly active, transmitting vital signals. However, this is not the case.

It is almost impossible to understand that the extremely critical process of loading neurotransmitters in containers is carried out by only one cell per container. Especially when we find that 40% of the time these cells are switched off.

Using a new method, researchers from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen closely examined the enzyme and discovered that its activity switches on and off at random periods of time, contradicting our previous understanding.

“Contrary to popular belief, and unlike many other proteins, these enzymes could stop working for minutes to hours. Still, the brains of humans and other mammals are miraculously able to function,” says Professor Dimitrios Stamou, who led the study from the research center at the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Chemistry.

【1】What is implied in the second paragraph?

A.The enzyme is continuously turning on and off.

B.Enzyme does not affect the transmission of brain signals.

C.No enzyme has been found in the mammalian brain so far.

D.Scientists used to think the special enzyme does not take a break.

【2】How could we move our bodies as we like?

A.The communication between neurons happens without stop.

B.We shape our thoughts though we may not have good memories.

C.The newly found unique enzyme is at the most time switched off.

D.Neurotransmitters transport a unique enzyme from one neuron to another.

【3】Why do the scientists think the discovery unbelievable?

A.There is enzyme in mammalian brains.

    B.Mammalian brains function as human’s.

C.One cell can have such an important function.

D.40% of the critical cells are actually switched off.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

A.A Surprising Significant Finding about Mammalian Brains

B.A Very Important Research Led by Professor Dimittrios Stamou

C.Researches on Brains of Animals Being Carried out By Scientists

D.A Completely New Method Employed by the Department of Chemistry

  • 23、Currently, New Zealand’s government announces it will help pay for poorer families to replace their old cars with cleaner hybrid (混合动力的) or electric ones. The government says it plans to spend $357million on the test program.

The move is part of a wider plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions(排放物). Greenhouse gases are believed to cause warming temperatures in the Earth’s atmosphere. New Zealand plans to provide aid for businesses to reduce emissions and have buses that run on environmentally safe fuel by 2035.The government also plans to provide food-waste collection for most homes by 2030.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardem said in a statement, “We’ve all seen the recent reports on sea level rise and its influence right here in New Zealand. We cannot leave the issue of climate change until it’s too late to fix.” The plan is a step toward New Zealand’s stated goal of reaching net-zero(净零)carbon emissions by 2050.

Reaching net-zero emissions means not creating more carbon in the atmosphere than oceans and forests can remove. Ardern said that reducing dependence on traditional fuels would help protect families from extreme price increases. The plan also sets a goal of reducing total car travel by 20 percent over the next 13years. The programs will be paid for from a $2.8 billion climate emergency response fund.

Officials said that over time, money collected from polluters would pay for the programs rather than taxes from families. Some critics of the plan say it continued to be less restrictive on New Zealand’s huge agriculture industry. Agriculture creates more than half of the nation’s total greenhouse gas emissions. But it is also important to the economy as the nation’s biggest export earner.

David Seymour is the leader of New Zealand’s ACT political party. He said that some of the announced programs were proven to be ineffective and had been tried and failed overseas. Seymour added that people should be able to choose how they reduce emissions through the market-based emissions trading plan.

【1】What does New Zealand government plan to do?

    A.Increase dependence on traditional fuels.

    B.Reduce expense on food-waste collection.

C.Offer businesses help to lessen emissions.

D.Buy cars for families and double car travel.

【2】What does Jacinda Ardem suggest doing about the climate change?

    A.Observing the sea level rise.

    B.Publishing the recent reports.

    C.Dealing with the issue instantly.

    D.Raising emergency response funds.

【3】What can we infer from the text?

A.The move has a goal of reducing the use of buses.

B.Agriculture plays a vital part in the nation’s economy.

C.The announced programs will be applied internationally.

D.Achieving net-zero emissions means creating no carbon at all.

【4】What is David Seymour’s attitude towards the programs?

    A.Tolerant.

    B.Unclear.

    C.Favorable.

    D.Doubtful.

  • 24、For many Americans, regular exercise is a complicated commitment—one made at the beginning of January that fades out within weeks or months. Busy work schedules, a lack of motivation and unease towards exercising in public all contribute to the discouraging statistics that only around a quarter of adults exercise enough per week.

This month, enterptiser Trent Ward and designer Yves Behar are uncovering their design for a mirror fitness system, Forme. Forme is reflective like a mirror, uses machine learning to heighten workouts, and offers attachments including ankle belts, rope handles and a heart rate monitor. When not in use, the two arms that form the resistance pulley (滑轮) system fold behind it and the display screen disappears, turning Forme into a simple full—length mirror.

Interest in home exercise has particularly increased recently around the world. Home workout apps have seen a significant uptick in downloads, and trendy brands like Peloton have rolled out free virtual workouts for everyone stuck indoors. One French athlete who was kept away from others chose to run an entire marathon on his 23-foot balcony.

But beyond the new restrictions affecting daily workout routines, Ward and Behar are tapping into the same concerns that have made every home workout appealing:the ability to save time and sweat in the privacy of one’s home. In an age of personal metrics (衡量标准)--where one can measure their heart rate and sleep cycles with smart watches and train for marathons with AI smart sneakers----Ward and Behar want to improve exercise through machine learning. Forme evaluates performance and adjusts weights accordingly. Easy access to one’s own performance data also makes it easier to track that progress and stay motivated.

Though it’s too soon to tell if mirror gyms will be the trend of the late 2010s to 2020s, Behar explained that having a screen in the home can become the basis for more than just fitness, such as shopping or telemedicine.

【1】What does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?.

    A.The ways to operate Forme.

    B.The features of Forme.

    C.The reasons to develop Forme.

    D.The theory behind Forme.

【2】How can Peloton benefit its users?

A.By offering them online workouts for free.

B.By raising their interest in marathon.

C.By keeping them far away from others.

D.By entertaining them with all kinds of downloads.

【3】What makes home workout appealing according to paragraph 4?

A.The better results than outdoor activities.

    B.The fresher air at home.

    C.The privacy of home.

D.The convenient access to mass data.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Can Forme Have More Powerful Functions?

B.Does Regular Exercise Keep up with New Technology?

C.Is the New Trend of Smart Machines at Home available?
