  • 22、Myth: If you cut your hair, it will grow long faster.

Truth: That’s not true. “Your hair isn’t like a lawn or a rosebush, where cutting can stimulate fresh growth,” says Phillip Kingsley. The length of your hair is genetically determined. When it reaches a certain length, it stops growing. When you clear up the dead split ends, this make your hair look healthier, but not necessarily longer.

Myth: If you skip meals, you lose weight fast.

Truth: There’s no truth in this advice. Not only will you not lose weight by starving yourself, but according to Carol Ann Rinzler, this may actually cause you to gain weight. Rinzler reasons that missing a meal causes your metabolism(新陈代谢) to slow down so that you burn food more slowly. This only makes you feel hungrier and by the time you finally do reach the table you will probably eat more food. Strange as it may seem, studies show that eating several small meals and snacks throughout the day is a more healthy way to lose pounds.

Myth: If you swallow gum,it will stay inside your stomach for seven years.

Truth: Actually, it takes just a few days for gum to make its exit---not seven years, says NeiIzenberg, M. D., editor of Kids Health Organization. But because gum is made of the same thing as rubber, it cannot be fully digested in your stomach--- so if you gum up the works on a regular basis, you might find yourself in a sticky situation.

Myth: The best way to stop a nosebleed is to lift your head back.

Truth: Now that’s bad advice. Bloody noses are caused by broken blood vessels, so while lifting your head back might stop the fluid from rushing out of your nose, it won’t stop the bleeding; you’ll just end up swallowing lots of blood. Your best bet “Rest quietly. Don’t poke or pick, and the blood will naturally clot (凝结成块) within a minute or two”, suggests Dr. Izenberg.

【1】The length of your hair is determined by ________.

    A. cutting it often

    B. your gene

    C. the food you eat

    D. clearing up the dead split ends.

【2】According to Carol Ann Rinzler, skipping meals will __________.

    A. help you lose weight fast

    B. help you lose weight slowly

    C. cause you to become fatter

    D. make you burning food more quickly

【3】 Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. Gum cannot be fully digested in the stomach.

    B. Gum can stay inside your stomach for seven years if you swallow it.

    C. Gum can leave your stomach after you swallow in a few days later.

    D. If you often swallow gum, you might find yourself in a sticky situation

  • 23、   Growing up in Arizona’s rodeo (竞技) country, I was familiar with the events that come with traveling rodeos: bull riding, dressing and mutton busting. Mutton busting is like bull riding, but instead of bulls, they use sheep. And in place of the men, it’s children between six and ten years old who try to hang on for eight seconds.

It took me all of five minutes to say yes to the idea of riding a sheep. Being seven years old, my decision-making ability was pretty limited. I figured I could ride a sheep as well as the next kid. Little did I know that I was in for a world of pain and embarrassment.

My nerves were shaking the day of the rodeo. I hated being in front of crowds. I didn’t like getting dirty; I didn’t even like sheep, which I thought of as just dirty and smelly. Yet there I was, getting ready to ride one for eight seconds in front of hundreds of people. I wanted to run out of the field and hide in the hot car until it was over. But by the time this idea occurred to me, it was too late. I was lifted away from my mother by a rodeo trainer and placed onto a platform.

My feet went into the narrow pen (羊圈) first. I felt my shoes touch the dirty floor of the pen. Once I was balanced on the top of the sheep, the trainer let go and told me to lean forward. I did as he said. I could feel the animal’s heart beating faster than mine. I realized that the poor sheep was even more frightened than I was.

Then the gate opened, and I quickly discovered that my hold was too weak. Within three seconds I had fallen off the sheep, and found myself face-down on the sun-baked earth. The sheep thought this was its time to take revenge (复仇), and attacked me from behind. There I lay, hat down, covered in dirt, with tears streaming down my face. I looked behind me to see my mother running to comfort me. “Stand up and show them you’re okay,” she told me as she wiped the dirty tears from my face. I stood up, dirty and upset, waved my little hand, and walked out with my mother.

Sadly, I didn’t win anything, not even the respect of these rodeo animals. I did find a new admiration for those little balls of wool, though.

1Which of the following is TRUE about “mutton busting”?

A.It is a dirty and terrible game. B.Only strong adults can ride a sheep.

C.It is intended to pick the fastest sheep. D.It’s a game for 6-to-10-year-old children.

2The author decided to take part in the competition because ________.

A.it was part of growing up B.he thought he could do well

C.mother made him do so D.he found it very interesting

3What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

A.Why the author lost the competition.

B.Why a mother should comfort her child.

C.How the author failed in the sheep riding.

D.How the sheep hurt the author when it attacked.

4We learn from the article that ________.

A.sheep riding is as difficult as bull riding

B.sheep riding is not popular because the pen is very dirty

C.the author wanted to give up before the competition

D.the author kept trying until he succeeded in riding a sheep

  • 24、Expertise is what separates amateurs from true masters in almost any field. You might wonder whether experts are “born” or “made”. Experts in the field prove that expertise is acquired through dedicated practice, but how exactly do people go about becoming experts?

People who become experts tend to get a body of knowledge that makes them one of the most informed individuals in their field. They also possess the skills that they need to determine when and how to utilize their knowledge. Recently, a popular idea has emerged that the key to becoming an expert is devoting at least 10,000 hours to the study and practice of a subject. In the study, researchers found that the most accomplished violinists at a music academy had spent an average 10,000 hours practicing their instruments. Pop psychology author Malcolm Gladwell coined the phrase “the ten-thousand-hour rule”. Gladwell also suggested tech-entrepreneur Bill Gates had devoted 10,000 hours to practicing programming before he created Microsoft.

Anders Ericsson of the University of Florida, who is a world-renowned expert, has studied experts from all walks of life and pointed out the deficiency of “the ten-thousand-hour rule”. Ericsson believes that what separates amateurs from experts is what is referred to as deliberate practice. Ordinary practice can help people become skilled at a task, but deliberate practice needs to improve other things, such as your current skill level, setting goals, and receiving training and instruction from a qualified teacher.

While Ericsson believes deliberate practice is the key to becoming an expert, not all researchers agree with his conclusion. Some recent studies have found deliberate practice isn’t the only factor that explains the differences between the skilled and the unskilled. While psychologists are not sure exactly which factors might also play a role, personality traits, physical characteristics, and overall intelligence may matter as well.

Practice is essential for developing a skill, but becoming an expert requires constantly challenging yourself to do better, learn more, and acquire new knowledge and skills. Simply practicing the same skills over and over again will make you better in those areas, but it will not lead to true expertise.

【1】What’s the main role of the first paragraph?

    A.To lead to the topic.

    B.To analyze the popular idea.

    C.To describe the background.

    D.To introduce a phenomenon.

【2】Gladwell proposed the example of Bill Gates to illustrate ________.

    A.patience matters a lot

B.hard work will finally pay off

    C.the importance of repeated practice

    D.the difficulty of becoming a well-known expert

【3】What does the underlined word “deficiency” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Feature

    B.Influence

    C.Significance

    D.Shortcoming

【4】Why do some researchers disagree with Anders Ericsson’s idea?

A.Because his research range is quite limited.

B.Because he ignores some related factors.

C.Because he introduces some conflicting factors.

D.Because his research mistakes some definitions.

【5】What does the last paragraph indicate?

A.People should develop different skills in life.

B.Simply practicing is not enough to attain true expertise.

C.People shouldn’t only focus on challenging themselves.

D.Constantly challenging is essential for learning new knowledge.
