二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It’s such a happy-looking library, painted yellow, decorated with palm-tree stickers and sheltered from the Florida sun by its own roof. About the size of a microwave oven, it’s pedestrian-friendly, too, waiting for book lovers next to a sidewalk in Palm Beach Country Estates, along the northern boundary of Palm Beach Gardens.

It’s a library built with love.

A year ago, shortly after, Janey Henriksen saw a Brian Williams report about the Little Free. Library organization, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit that aims to promote literacy and build a sense of community in a neighborhood by making, books freely available, she announced to her family of four, “That’s what we’re going to do for our spring break!”

Son Austin, now a 10th-grader, didn’t see the point of building a library that resembles a mailbos. But Janey insisted, and husband Peter unwillingly got to work. The 51-year-old owner of a ship supply company modified a small wooden house that he’d built years earlier for daughter Abbie’s toy horses, and made a door of glass.

After adding the library’s final touches(装点), the family hung a signboard on the front, instructing users to “take a book, return a book,” and making the Henriksen library, now one of several hundred like it nationwide and among more than 2,500 in the world, the only Little Free Library in Palm Beach county.

They stocked it with 20 or so books they’d already read, a mix of science fiction, reference titles, novels and kids’ favorites. “I told them, keep in mind that you might not see it again,” said Janey s stay-at-home mom.

Since then, the collection keeps replenishing(补充) itself, thanks to ongoing donations from borrowers. The library now gets an average of five visits a day.

The project’s best payoff, says Peter, are the thank-you notes left behind. “We had no idea in the beginning that it would be so popular.”

【1】In what way is the library “pedestrian—friendly”?

    A. It owns a yellow roof.

    B. It stands near a sidewalk.

    C. It protects book lovers from the sun.

    D. It uses palm-tree stickers as decorations.

【2】Janey got the idea to build a library from .

    A. a visit to Brian Williams

    B. a spring break with her family

    C. a book sent by one of her neighbors

    D. a report on a Wisconsin-based organization

【3】What can we infer about the signboard?

    A. It Was made by a user of the library.

    B. It marked a final touch to the library.

    C. It aimed at making the library last long.

    D. It indicated the library was a family property.

  • 22、   Scientists in New Zealand have found fossilized (化石的) leg bones from a penguin believed to have been about the size of an adult human. The previously undiscovered giant penguin species likely stood about 1.6 meters tall and weighed up to 80 kilograms.

The penguin existed about 60 million years ago. The bones are believed to be from the oldest of several species of giant penguins that lived after dinosaurs died out. A fossil hunter found the bones last year in the Waipara River bed near the city of Christchurch. The bones are from the animal’s legs and feet. Scientists confirmed that the bones came from a newly discovered species.

Paul Scofield is senior curator (馆长) at New Zealand’s Canterbury Museum. He co-wrote a paper on the discovery. He said that the bones are an important find. They show that the species is similar to another giant penguin found in Antarctica in 2000. The latest discovery, he said, helps show a clear connection between the two areas during the Paleocene period. This period lasted from 66 million to 56 million years ago.

Scofield said the penguins were able to grow larger after entering a new development period following the extinction of dinosaurs, sea reptiles and huge fish. Scofield added that the giant penguins became extinct within 30 million years, as large mammals began to rule the waters.

John Cockrem is a penguin expert at the country’s Massey University who was also not involved in the research. He said the discovery helps add to what we know about giant penguins. He said it also confirmed New Zealand as the penguin center of the world.

New Zealand is believed to have been home to many giant bird species that later disappeared. These included the world’s largest parrot, a giant eagle and an emu-like bird called the moa. Recently, Canterbury Museum announced the discovery of an unusually large parrot believed to have lived about 19 million years ago. Scientists say the bird stood about one meter tall.

1What is special about the penguin found in New Zealand?

A.The place it lived in. B.The age of its existence.

C.Its species and size. D.Its shape and habits.

2Why did the giant penguins die out?

    A.Large mammals controlled the sea.

B.They were killed out by huge fish.

C.Climate changes were not fit for them.

D.They grew too large to feed themselves.

3What do we know from the last paragraph?

A.All kinds of penguins live in New Zealand.

B.Many giant birds used to exist in New Zealand.

C.The world’s largest parrot lives in New Zealand.

D.New Zealand owns the most bird species in the world.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Similar Penguin Fossils Have Been Found Again

B.An Ancient Creature Has Been Found in New Zealand

C.Some Giant Penguins Appeared after Dinosaurs Died Out

D.Scientists Found Bones from Giant Penguin in New Zealand

  • 23、Imagine reading a story titled “Pursuing Success”. That would be an inspiring story, wouldn’t it? Maybe—but maybe not. It might well be the story of someone whose never ending chase for more and more success leaves them unsatisfied and incapable of happiness. Though it isn’t a conventional medical addiction, for many people success has addictive properties.

Obviously, success goes with praise. To a certain extent, praise stimulates the neurotransmitter dopamine (神经递质多巴胺), which contributes to all addictive behaviors.

The desire for success may be born to human nature, but specialness doesn’t come cheap. Success is tough work, and it requires bearing the cost of losing. In the 1980s, the physician Robert Goldman famously found that more than half of ambitious athletes would be willing to take a drug that would kill them in five years in exchange for winning every competition they entered.

Unfortunately, success is endless. The goal can’t be satisfactory; most people never feel “successful enough”. The high only lasts a day or two, and then it’s on to the next goal. Psychologists call this the hedonic treadmill (享乐跑步机现象), in which satisfaction wears off almost immediately and we must run on to the next reward to avoid the feeling of falling behind.

People should get off the treadmill. But quitting isn’t easy for addicts. For people hooked on substances, withdrawal can be a painful experience, both physically and psychologically. Research finds that depression and anxiety are common among outstanding athletes after their careers end. Olympic athletes, in particular, suffer from the “post-Olympic blues”.

Just like wine, success in and of itself is not a bad thing. Both can bring fun and sweetness to life. But both become bossy when they are a substitute for—a instead of a complement (补充物) to—the relationships and love that should be the center of our lives.

【1】What can be inferred from the first paragraph?

A.Success doesn’t always bring positive results

B.A traditional, medical addiction leads to success

C.The passion for constant success is rarely praised.

D.Success addition has already drawn wide attention.

【2】Why did the author mention the research findings of Robert Goldman?

A.To stress the key to success lies in efforts.

B.To show success is a tough and cruel job.

C.To argue that athletes deserve more rewards.

D.To describe the routine training of an ordinary athlete.

【3】Which of the following is not part of the hedonic treadmill theory?

A.Enjoying the beauty and love around you.

B.Being offered a promotion at work.

C.Having the house you want to live in.

D.Eating the food you’ve been longing for.

【4】What can success bring to a success addict according to psychologists?

A.Satisfaction and a sense of pride.

    B.Anxiety and short-lived happiness.

    C.Relaxation and endless motivation.

    D.Confidence and permanent happiness.

【5】What does the author suggest people do about pursuing success?

    A.Stop chasing success.

    B.Chase success at any cost.

C.Reflect on what matters in life.

    D.Give up love and relationships.

  • 24、We all know the hard work that filmmakers and actors put in to provide us with entertainment, but it seems that even regular moviegoers like us have a big impact on how a movie turns out too. For decades now, film studios have used so-called test screenings to get feedback from members of the public before a movie comes out. While test audience members are usually asked to fill in a questionnaire after a screening, telling the film studio what they liked and didn’t like, media giant Disney has come up with a more high-tech solution.

According to a paper published this summer by the company’s researchers, Disney is measuring test audiences’ reactions by using special cameras placed inside cinemas. Pairing the cameras with custom software, the company can track what each audience member is feeling at any point in the movie, from anger to joy. This works by mapping 68 different points on each audience member’s face. The cameras can see in the dark, and the software can figure out a person’s mood based on the slightest of facial expressions.

It’s hoped that this new method will allow more detailed feedback from test audiences. Rather than relying on audience members to recall their feelings after the movie’s over, it can accurately read their reactions in real-time.

Test screenings are highly valued in the movie industry, and several well-known movies have been greatly altered following feedback. Viewers of E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), would have left the cinema feeling a whole lot differently if it weren’t for its test audience’s feedback. “In one cut of the film that was tested, E.T. died instead of going home in his spaceship. You won’t be surprised to hear that the test audience in question didn’t warm to this ending at all,” wrote media website Den of Geek.

But for those who are concerned about privacy, the cameras won’t be installed in public cinemas. After all, unless you’re part of a test audience, being in front of the camera is best left to the movie stars.

    1Why are test screenings necessary?

    A. To amuse us.

    B. To influence a movie.

    C. To get reactions of the audience.

    D. To spy on the audience.

2How does the high-tech method work?

    A. Audiences recall their detailed feelings.

    B. The cameras can read accurate feedback from the audience.

    C. The company can track each audience member.

    D. The company are measuring audience’s reactions.

3What do we know about E.T?

    A. It doesn’t warm the audience.

    B. It altered audience’s feedback.

    C. The original ending is different.

    D. E.T died in his spaceship.

4What can we infer from the passage?

    A. People worry about privacy.

    B. The cameras won’t be put in public cinemas.

    C. The technology of test screenings is reliable.

    D. You can be in front of the camera.
