二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、As a manager, Tiffany is responsible for interviewing applicants for some of the positions with her company. During one interview, she noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise.

He had a perfect resume and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy,” so she decided to offer the job to her second choice. “It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person.” Tiffany admits. What she hadn’t known at the time of the interview was that the candidate’s “different” behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding. He was an Asian-American raised in a family where respect for those in authority was shown by turning away your eyes. “I was just thrown off by the lack of eye contact, not realizing it was cultural,” Tiffany says. “I missed out, but will not miss that opportunity again.”

Many of us have had similar experiences with behaviors we describe as different. As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces more diverse, it is becoming essential to expand our understanding of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions (假设) .

    Hire Advantage

At a time when hiring qualified people is becoming more difficult, employers who can have no personal biases (偏见) from the process have an obvious advantage. My company, Mindsets LLC, helps organizations and individuals see their own blind spots. A real estate (房产) agent we worked with illustrates the positive difference such training can make .

“During my Mindsets coaching period, I was taught how to own a diversified workforce. I employed people from different cultures and skill sets. The agents were able to make use of their full potential and experiences to build up the company. When the real estate market began to change, it was because we had a diverse agent pool that we were able to stay in the real estate market much longer than others in the same profession.”

    Blinded by Gender

Dale is an account executive who attended one of my workshops in charge of a diverse workforce. “Through some of the lessons, I discovered my personal bias.” he recalls. “I learned I had not been looking at a person as a whole person, and being open to differences.” In his case, the blindness was not about culture but rather gender.

“I had a management position open in my department; and the two finalists were a man and a woman. Had I not attended this workshop, I would have automatically assumed the man was the best candidate because the position required quite a bit of extensive travel. My assumption would have been that even though both candidates were great and could have been successful in the position, I assumed the woman would have wanted to be home with her children and not travel.” Dale’s assumptions are another example of the well-intentioned but incorrect thinking that limits an organization’s ability to promote the full potential of a diverse workforce. “I learned from the class that instead of forcing my gender biases into the situation, I needed to present the full range of duties, responsibilities and expectations to all candidates and allow them to make an informed decision.” Dale sings high praise for the workshop, “because it helped me make decisions based on fairness.”

    A better Bottom Line

An open mind about diversity not only improves organizations from inside, it is profitable as well. These comments from a customer service representative show how an inclusive attitude can improve sales.” Most of my customers speak English as a second language. One of the best things my company has done is to contract with a language service that offers translations over the phone. It wasn’t until my boss received Mindsets’ training that she was able to understand how important inclusiveness was to customer service. As a result, our customer base has increased.”

Once we start to see people as individuals, we can move positively toward inclusiveness for everyone. Diversity is about coming together and taking advantage of our differences and similarities and about building better communities and organizations. When we begin to question our assumptions and challenge what we think we have learned from our past , from the media, peers, family, friends, etc, we begin to realize that some of our conclusions are imperfect or contrary to our fundamental values. We need to train ourselves to think differently, shift our mindsets and realize that diversity opens doors for all of us, creating opportunities in organizations and communities that benefit everyone.

  • 22、Exercise seems to be good for the human brain, with many recent studies suggesting that regular exercise improves memory and thinking skills. But an interesting new study asks whether the apparent cognitive benefits from exercise are real or just a placebo effect that is,if we think we will be “smarter” after exercise,do our brains respond accordingly? The answer has significant implications for any of us hoping to use exercise to keep our minds sharp throughout our lives.

While many studies suggest that exercise may have cognitive benefits, recently some scientists have begun to question whether the apparently beneficial effects of exercise on thinking might be a placebo effect. So researchers at Florida State University in Tallahassee and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign decided to focus on expectations,on what people anticipate that exercise will do for thinking. If people’s expectations jibe (吻合) closely with the actual benefits, then at least some of those improvements are probably a result of the placebo effect and not of exercise.

For the new study, which was published last month in PLOS One,the researchers recruited 171 people through an online survey system, they asked half of these volunteers to estimate by how much a stretching and toning regimens (拉伸运动) performed three times a week might improve various measures of thinking. The other volunteers were asked the same questions, but about a regular walking program.

In actual experiments, stretching and toning program generally have little if any impact on people’s cognitive skills.Walking,on the other hand, seems to substantially improve thinking ability.

But the survey respondents believed the opposite, estimating that the stretching and toning program would be more beneficial for the mind than walking. The estimates of benefits from walking were lower.

These data, while they do not involve any actual exercise, are good news for people who do exercise.“The results from our study suggest that the benefits of aerobic exercise are not a placebo effect,” said Cary Stothart,a graduate student in cognitive psychology at Florida State University, who led the study.

If expectations had been driving the improvements in cognition seen in studies after exercise,Mr.Stothart said, then people should have expected walking to be more beneficial for thinking than stretching. They didn’t,implying that the changes in the brain and thinking after exercise are physiologically genuine.

The findings are strong enough to suggest that exercise really does change the brain and may,in the process, improve thinking,Mr.Stothart saidThat conclusion should encourage scientists to look even more closely into how,at a molecular level, exercise remodels the human brain,he saidIt also should encourage the rest of us to move, since the benefits are,it seems, not imaginary, even if they are in our head

【1】Which of the following about the placebo effect is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. It occurs during exercise.

    B. It has cognitive benefits.

    C. It is just a mental reaction.

    D. It is a physiological response.

【2】Why did the researchers at the two universities conduct the research?

    A. To discover the placebo effect in the exercise.

    B. To prove the previous studies have a big drawback.

    C. To test whether exercise can really improve cognition.

    D. To encourage more scientists to get involved in the research.

【3】What can we know about the research Cary Stothart and his team carried out?

    A. They employed 171 people to take part in the actual exercise.

    B. The result of the research removed the recent doubt of some scientists.

    C. The participants thought walking had a greater impact on thinking ability.

    D. Their conclusion drives scientists to do research on the placebo effect.

【4】What might be the best title for the passage?

    A. Is it necessary for us to take exercise?

    B. How should people exercise properly?

    C. What makes us smarter during exercise?

    D. Does exercise really make us smarter?

  • 23、 Tests are not fun—but they’re necessary. But in places like Colorado, Connecticut and New York, we’re seeing a new and problematic movement within public education to convince parents to pull their children from participating in any standardized testing. They’re opting out of(决定退出)the exams designed to measure how well our schools are teaching our children.

Let’s look at why some parents are opting out.The most common argument is that standardized testing takes too much classroom time away from instruction.Yes, in too many schools and in too many districts, there is an overemphasis on testing. As a parent, I understand that problem. My daughter came home from public school one day and said class was easy now that “the test” was over. And I thought, “What are we communicating to our kids if they think the test is the most important thing—and once it’s over, learning ends?”

Those test-crazed districts need to change. But a new study by Teach Plus, an organization that advocates for students in urban schools, found that on average, in grades three and seven, just 1.7 percent of classroom time is devoted to preparing for and taking standardized tests. That’s not shocking at all. Most people spend a larger percentage of their waking day choosing an outfit to wear or watching TV.

We also shouldn’t accept the false argument that testing restricts educators too much, stifles innovation(革新) in the classroom or takes the joy out of teaching. That line of thought assumes that the test is the be-all and end-all—and if that’s the perspective, the joy is already long gone.Teachers enter this profession because they care about kids, believe each one has the ability to succeed and want to teach far beyond minimum proficiency. The most valuable teachers are those who impart knowledge, not just information, and do so in a way that engages students and makes school interesting.

“Okay,” the opt-out crowd replies, “what about kids who are stressed out and suffering from anxiety because of standardized tests?” You know what? Life can be stressful; it can be challenging. The alternative is to hand out prizes just for participating, give out straight A’s for fear of damaging a kid’s ego—and continue to fall further and further behind as a country.I reject that mind-set(心态).

Rather than encouraging parents to opt out of testing, it would be much more productive for the leaders of this distracting movement to help improve the assessments.Make the exams more reflective of student learning.Ultimately, students and educators need test data—opting out does harm to both. And it risks endangering the progress that all of our children need.

  • 24、IQ is set at around 20 years old and later effort will not improve it much, recent research finds. The complexity of people’s jobs, higher education, socializing and reading all probably have little effect on cognitive (认知的) ability.

Naturally, these activities have many other benefits, but little influence on IQ. However, education is particularly important at an early age when the brain is still developing. By early adulthood, though, most people’s IQ has settled down.

While some studies have suggested that cognitive activities in later life can improve IQ, Professor William Kremen, the study’s first author, thinks otherwise, “The findings suggest that the impact of education, occupational complexity and participation in cognitive activities on later life cognitive function likely reflects the opposite. In other words, they are largely the results of young adult intellectual capacity.”

The study included 1,009 men now in their 50s and 60s whose IQ was assessed when they were around 20 years old. They were given tests of abstract reasoning, verbal fluency and memory, along with other cognitive measures.

The results showed that most of the difference between the men’s IQs in mid-life was explained by the difference between them at around 20-years-old. In comparison, the complexity of the job they had, the intellectual activities they engaged in, and their education in the meantime hardly had any effect on their IQ. Brain scans also showed that IQ at age 20 was associated with the surface area of the cerebral cortex, which is the brain’s gray matter, the part that performs the higher functions of thinking, perceiving and language.

Most of the benefits of education for IQ likely happen before young adulthood, said Professor Kremen. “Our findings suggest we should look at this from a lifetime perspective. Improving cognitive reserve and reducing later life cognitive decline may really need to begin with more access to quality childhood and adolescent education.”

【1】What does Kremen’s study mainly focus on?

    A.Who has high IQ.

    B.How is IQ improved

    C.What determines IQ.

    D.When is IQ fixed.

【2】What is the key factor affecting a person’s cognitive ability according to the study?

    A.Higher education

B.The intellectual capacity around 20 years old

    C.Occupational complexity

    D.Cognitive activities in adulthood

【3】Why are the men in the study given the tests?

A.To evaluate their IQ in mid-life.

    B.To improve their cognitive abilities.

C.To introduce cognitive measures to them.

D.To find out reasons for their IQ differences.

【4】What does Kremen suggest people do?

    A.Get engaged in complex jobs.

B.Keep on learning for a lifetime.

    C.Have a high-quality adolescent education.

D.Join in as many cognitive activities as possible.
