二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important things to remember about reading rate:

    ● Knowing why you are reading or what you are reading to find out will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.

    ● Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, arithmetic problems, science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea.

    ● Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories meant for enjoyment, news letters from friends, pieces of news from local, or home-town, papers, telling what is happening to friends and neighbors.

    ● In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You will need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

1The underlined word "rate" in the first sentence means _______.

    A.fast. B.slow. C.speed. D.skill.

    2How fast should we read?

A.The faster, the better. B.The more slowly, the better.

C.Neither too fast nor too slow. D.It depends on what we are reading.

3According to the passage which of the following is NOT true?

A.Read slowly when you are reading something important to you.

B.Read fast when you are reading something unimportant to you.

C.Read the materials that you are interested in slowly.

D.Read the materials that you are interested in fast.

4Which do you think is the best title of the passage?

A.How to decide your reading speed

B.How to raise your reading speed

C.How to improve your reading skills

D.How to choose your reading materials

  • 22、Encouraging pupils to keep noise to a minimum should be a valuable component of all children’s education, according to new research.

Dr. Helen Lees, from Stirling University’s school of education, says that “enforced(强制的)silence” is seen as a punishment and often acts to suppress children’s natural ability. But she says that teaching children about the benefits of “enforced silence”,--- deliberate stillness that gives them the opportunity to focus and reflect in a stress-free environment--- can have a significant effect on pupils' concentration and behavior.

It is the latest in a string of researches to establish a link between the classroom environment and pupils’ academic ability.

A study almost a decade ago in London found that children’s exam results were cut by as much as a third if they were taught in noisy classrooms. Teaching unions have also called for a limit of 26℃ to be put on classroom temperatures because teachers and pupils struggle to work in hot conditions, and some educationalists claim that too much clutter(杂乱的东西)on classroom walls can prevent children from concentrating.

Dr. Lees said, “When we take some research on school settings and put it all together, what we see is that education without silence does not make much sense. In areas of better learning outcomes, better self-confidence and well-being measures, enforced silence in a person’s life and an individual's education is shown throughout the relevant research to be a benefit.”

Dozens of schools across Britain have already introduced periods of “reflective silence” into the timetable.

Kevin, head of Sheringdale Primary, has just introduced a minute’s silence at the start of twice-weekly meetings in which children are taught breathing techniques and encouraged to reflect. The school plans to introduce it into classrooms every day.

  • 23、A company called Neuralink has shared a video which shows a monkey playing a Video game. That's fairly unusual, but what makes the video even stranger is that the monkey is playing the video game with just its mind.

Neuralink owned by Elon Musk is working to develop devices(设备)that could allow People to control things using just their brains. It sounds like something from a science fiction movie, but it is already showing progress in doing similar work with other animals.

The monkey is called Pager, who has two of Neuralink's special “Link" devices inside his brain, planted by a surgeon. These devices are connected to 2,048 wires which lead to the parts of Pager's brain that control movements of the arms and hands. In the experiment, scientists taught Pager to play a video game.

Firstly, Pager controlled the video game using a joystick, which is a normal gaming controller. But as Pager played, his Link devices wirelessly sent out information about the signals his brain was using to control his arms and hands. Scientists recorded all of these signals.

Then they used computers to match up the signals from Pager's brain to the movements that his hands were actually doing. This was challenging work and the scientists counted on AI to help them decode (解码) Pager's brain signals.

The final step was to have a computer make moves in the video game as if Pager had actually moved the joystick. If Pager thought about moving the joystick up, the computer would send an “up" signal to the video game.

Even though Neuralink's work now focuses on animals and video games, there's a very serious purpose behind it. Neuralink wants to make it possible for humans who have lost the ability to control their bodies to communicate with the world. Mr. Musk says that in the near future Neauralink hopes to allow a paralyzed(瘫痪的)person to control a smartphone just by thinking, He believes they'll be able to do it faster than those who are using their hands.

【1】Why does the author mention the video in paragraph 1?

    A.To advertise a well-known video game.

B.To show the unusual behaviour of monkeys.

C.To give an update on the progress of a research.

D.To introduce a way to improve animals' intelligence.

【2】Which of the following is a tough step in Neuralink's experiment?

A.Getting Pager to keep pace with the Link devices.

B.Teaching Pager to play a video game with a joystick.

C.Interpreting Pager's brain signals as hand movements.

D.Recording all the brain signals Pager sends to his hands.

【3】What is Mr.Musk's attitude towards the future of Neuralink's work?

    A.Vague.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Cautious.

    D.Confident.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Monkey Plays Video Games with His Mind

B.Elon Musk: A Super Ambitious Businessman

C.Neuralink Explores the Field of Mind-Reading

D.The Paralyzed Control Their Bodies by Thinking

  • 24、Japan is getting tough with recycling— and not in the paper and plastic kind of way. Recently, the country requires that all electronic goods—TVs, VCRs, stereos, and more be recycled. But recycling will not be left to consumers, instead, the devices will be sent to the original manufacturer for proper disposal.

The new law poses a few challenges to manufacturers who are now rushing to set up collection networks and perfecting techniques to take apart and recycle older products. With an eye toward the future, they are also integrating easily recycled materials into new products. Plastics, a major component of most electronic products, pose a particular obstacle because their quality becomes worse and worse with age, losing strength and flexibility even if reprocessed. NEC Corp. overcomes this problem by creating a plastics sandwich, in which the filling is 100 percent recycled plastic and the outer layers a mixture of 14 percent recycled material. The resulting plastic has sufficient strength and toughness for use as a case for desktop PCs. The company, in cooperation with plastic maker Sumitomo Dow, has also developed a new plastic, which engineers claim keeps its mechanical properties through repeated recycling. NEC uses the plastic, which is also flame-retardant(阻燃的)in battery cases for notebook PCs.

Meanwhile, Matsushita Electric, maker of the Panasonic brand, is avoiding plastic in favor of magnesium(镁). Magnesium, says the company, is ideal for recycling because it retains its original strength through repeated reprocessing. Matsushita has developed molding techniques to form magnesium into the case for a 21-inch TV.

Unfortunately, the magnesium case and energy-saving features make the TV about twice as expensive as an ordinary model. The company hopes, however, that increased use of magnesium will eventually bring prices down.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words.Use your own words as far as possible.

    Are you a textaholic?

Do you spend over an hour each day texting your friends? Do you frequently neglect work, study and leisure activities to check your phone for text message? Are you moody and emotional if you are separated from your mobile phone? Do you hardly ever use your phone to talk any more, and do your thumbs from texting too much?

If you answered 'Yes' to any of the above questions, then the chances are that you are a textaholic.A textaholic can be defined as someone who is addicted to sending and receiving text messages. The main symptoms are strong will to text which takes precedence over (优先于) everything else, and withdrawal symptoms (戒断症状)if messages fail to come in, leading to anger, depression and a lack of self-respect.Other problems include sleeplessness, eye strain, and repetitive strain injury due to constant messaging, not to mention expensive phone bills. The root of the problem, as with many addictions, is the desire to escape from emotional difficulties such as stress, anxiety and relationship problems.Experts warn that text addiction is likely to become the most common form of addiction in the future, especially among the young.

So what can you do if you think you may be textaholic? The key is to get your life back in balance.Make sure you resist the urge to answer every message you receive, and consider leaving your mobile phone behind occasionally when you go out. Most importantly, make a point of spending quality time with friends and family, and make time to re — learn the art of face-to-face conversation instead of conducting your relationships by means of text messages. Not only will you save time and money, but you may also rediscover the pleasure of true communication.
