二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、No one dances like you. Your mom knows it. Your friends know it. Even computers know it. Now, before you get too excited, keep in mind that it doesn’t mean you’re a particularly good dancer. Only that the way you throw your arms in the air is entirely unique.

In fact, according to a recent study, the scientists, from a research center in Finland, discovered a computer could magically identify your moves to whatever type of music. “We actually weren’t looking for this result, as we set out to study something completely different,” lead study author Emily Carlson explained in the interview. “Our original idea was to see if we could use machine learning to identify which type of music our participants (参与者) were dancing to, based on their movements.”

Unexpectedly, they built dance-recognition software. Thus, you may say, they moonwalked into the discovery.

For their study, the researchers asked 73 participants to dance to various types of music—while computer software tried to determine what kind of music they were listening to. Was it Blues? Jazz? or Metal? It turned out the computer wasn’t so good at telling styles of music. It made the right guess only about one in three times. But it did surprise the researchers with its impressive ability in another aspect: it knew exactly who was dancing 94% of the time.

In their introduction to the paper, the authors suggested that, “One of the most significant features of music is its tendency to make us move. The majority of people respond to hearing music with some kind of movement, from simply clapping to a beat to making complex (复杂的) dance movements.”

Of course, we don’t dance the same way to every song. That would be, well awkward. As the authors note, dance moves are changed according to the volume (音量) of the bass drum (低音鼓). Not only that but “the presence of kick drum uniquely related to the speed of head movements.” That’s a very technical way of suggesting that we dance to the music we’re given. The thing is, at the heart of the dance are movements—and whether they’re gentle taps or all out booty-shaking, they could function as identifiable biometric data (生物特征资料).

“It seems as though a person’s dance movements are a kind of fingerprint,” study co-author Pasi Saari noted in the paper. “Each person has a unique movement signature that stays the same no matter what kind of music is playing.”

【1】What was the original idea of the research?

    A.To discover music features.

    B.To recognize the dancer.

C.To identify the type of music.

    D.To tell dancers’ response.

【2】The underlined words “moonwalked into” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ________.

    A.firmly supported

    B.seriously reported

    C.unexpectedly made

    D.unreasonably questioned

    【3】According to Paragraph 6, ________.

A.dancing technique is decided by the given music

B.the volume of drums may be determined by dance moves

C.drum players’ head movements change the speed of playing

D.dance movements could function as identifiable biometric data

【4】Which might be the best title for the passage?

A.Is It Necessary to Carry Out Such Research?

B.The Way We Dance Is Kind of like a Fingerprint

C.The Tendency of Music to Make Us Move Is Complex

D.Why Do People Dance in the Same Way to Different Music?

That all changed when Blume attended a study program abroad. With the help of the staff at the Office of International Programs and the Veterans Resource Center (退伍老兵资源中心), he was able to take seven study trips abroad, visiting 19 countries in just three years.

Blume’s first stop was Leipzig, Germany for a German language program in the summer of 2018. Later that summer, Blume visited Australia as part of the stars and galaxy (星系) course. “There was a major eclipse (日食) in Australia that summer and it was an amazing thing to see,” Blume said. “We also visited Wyoming after leaving Australia for the same course to see the sky.”

  • 23、 Strawberry (草莓) fields dotted with hunched-over workers picking and packaging, then pushing the delicate red fruit to waiting trucks it is a typical winter scene embedded in the patchwork of homes and farms that make up eastern Hillsborough County.

That scene is changing, though, as the labor pool shrinks and technology comes knocking. Wish Farms owner Gary Wishnatzki and his engineer partner Bob Pitzer are banking on technology.

As strawberry season wrapped up in February, their driverless strawberry-picking machine drove into the fields for some test runs. The results were impressive and enlightening(有启迪作用的), Wishnatzki said.

For some three years now, farmers have been forced to abandon millions of dollars worth of strawberries in fields, mostly in Hillsborough and Manatee counties, because they lacked laborers, industry experts say. The problem has been just as serious in California, Arizona and other farm communities.

The reasons for the shrinking worker pool are numerous. Migrant(移民)workers who have picked the fields for years are aging. Young adults in migrant families already in the United States are getting better educations and have more choices these days, including the construction industry, which again is on the upswing. Stricter security is allowing fewer undocumented workers to cross the border from Mexico. And Mexicans are having much smaller families now  just over two children per family, compared with 7.3 per family in 1960, according to a Pew Hispanic Center report released in 2012.

And since Mexico’s economy bounced back faster than that of the U.S., more Mexicans have been able to find work closer to home, according to the study.

“We came up with a concept we perceive as a necessity,” Wishnatzki said. “The labor pool has been shrinking for over 10 years now. It has been pretty harmful.” So in 2012, he and Pitzer formed their partnership, Harvest CROO Robotics, to develop a mechanical picker.

The Harvest CROO design has multiple picking heads that will move across a field, picking 25 acres over a three-day period, the typical time for picking fruit as it ripens. It has a “vision system” to distinguish between red and green strawberries and is able to get under the leaves to find and pick the ripe berries.

Picking strawberries is nothing like using a combine on a corn field, coming through and thrashing down the plants. Strawberries are delicate and ripen in various intervals, which Harvest CROO is taking into account in developing its machine.

A strawberry-picking machine will never completely replace the need for human labor in the fields, Wishnatzki said, but if the machines can supplement(补充)labor enough to keep the industry profitable, he and Pitzer will have met their goal.

【1】Which of the following describes the typical winter scene of eastern Hillsborough County?

    A. Farmers work hard on a corn field.

    B. Workers pick and package strawberries.

    C. Scientists test machines in strawberry fields.

  • 26、请阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

More than 100,000 volunteers in 132 cities spent a weekend picking up plastic and other waste across the country, in a joint worldwide effort to clean up the planet.

To celebrate the 10th World Cleanup Day on Sept 15,some 700 nonprofit NGOs (nongovernmental originations) and social groups held activities aimed at cleaning up the environment and tackling the waste crisis throughout China, mobilizing an estimated 1 millionplus people.

From snowcapped mountains to vast oceans, people united in taking action to remove waste from the environment to raise awareness of the severity of the crisis.

“Where there is a will, every day can be and should be ‘Cleanup Day’, says Ma Yongjian, a volunteer from Beijing who recently did “plogging”—jogging while picking up trash—with his friends in Yudong Park in the northwest of the city.

“We must change the way of living we are used to, to reduce waste from its source,” says Joe Harvey, a British national and promoter of “zero waste” lifestyles in China. He and his girlfriend Carrie Yu created The Bulk House, a brand that provides zerowaste solutions for daily living. They are urging people to reduce or eliminate the use of plastic and singleuse disposables, such as plastic utensils, bags and beverage bottles.

Sounding a note of caution, Mao Da, a specialist in environmental history at Beijing Normal University, says: “In recent years, the massive consumption and materialistic craze have worsened the waste situation as trash has been produced at a faster pace and in greater quantities.”
