二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Tonal languages use pitch (音调) to distinguish words that otherwise might sound the same. In Mandarin, for instance, mă means horse whereas mã means mother. Nontonal languages like Spanish sometimes include pitch changes to suggest emotion, for example, but not to change a word’s meaning.

As a Mandarin speaker and musician, Jingxuan Liu wondered about the crossover (融合) between language and music. While studying at Duke University, Liu helped analyze the musical abilities of nearly half a million people from 203 countries. Her colleagues had launched an online game in which participants completed several musical tasks, including identifying matching melodies at different pitches and finding beat tracks that fit songs’ rhythms.

On average, native speakers of the 19 represented tonal languages were better at the melody task compared with speakers of 29 nontonal languages. And the effect wasn’t small a tonal first language strengthened melodic understanding by about half the amount that music lessons did, which was also surveyed. But tonal languages speakers tended to be worse at the rhythm task.

Humans must be choosy about what they pay attention to. Pitch patterns are quite important in tonal languages, which might explain the balancing act in music. “You’ve got a finite resource of attention, and you’ve got to divide up that somehow,” says study coauthor Courtney Hilton, a scientist at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

Prior research on language and music often compared just two tongues, usually English and Mandarin. But other cultural influences, such as Eastern and Western music styles, could have affected results. By examining a wide range of people, the new study included languages never estimated in this way and reached more generalizable conclusion.

“Our result here is showing that the language someone speaks which is an important part of culture — also shapes cognition,” Hilton says.

【1】Why did Liu’s colleagues launch the online game?

A.To attract more students to do the research.

B.To learn about different people’s musical abilities.

C.To confirm the role of music in people’s language learning.

D.To find the difference between tonal languages and nontonal ones.

【2】What were native speakers of tonal languages better at than those of nontonal languages?

    A.Finding beat tracks.

    B.Suggesting emotion.

    C.Distinguishing word meanings.

    D.Figuring out matching melodies.

【3】What does the underlined word “finite” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Valued.

    B.Limited.

    C.Special.

    D.Potential.

【4】Which of the following words can best describe Liu’s study?

    A.Ground-breaking.

    B.Brain-washing.

    C.Inefficient.

    D.Unreliable.

  • 22、It is an unpleasant extinction that will change the world and how people communicate: within 20 years, two thirds of all the planet’s languages will be dead.

Experts agree that nothing can stop it happening but one academic is trying her hardest to slow it down. Professor Antonella Sorace is one of a growing number who believe learning a second language has enormous untapped benefits for the human brain. This is true not only for young children but also for adults and people at risk from dementia (痴呆), where research consistently shows that learning a new language could delay the start of the disease for four to five years — a better result than with any medication to date.

It is those benefits of bilingualism (双语) that should encourage us to preserve and protect Europe’s minority languages — Gaelic, Manx, Cornish and Ulster Scots, she says.

Already her work and the project she founded three years ago in Edinburgh, Bilingualism Matters — now expanding across Europe and in the US — have convinced the Scottish government to introduce languages to primary schools. From 2023 all Scottish children will be learning a language other than English in their first year at school, with two other languages to be introduced later.

Bilingualism Matters is also working to encourage businesses to consider the benefits of their staff learning languages. “In business, people say ‘English is the language of business, why would I need to learn another language?’” said Sorace. “Maybe it would mean you could do better business.”

Just as disappearing forests take with them secrets of undiscovered medicines, disappearing languages can take the key to a longer and better quality of life. The first battle is to unpick the popular assumption that bilingualism might damage children’s brains. There were even suggestions it could encourage schizophrenia (精神分裂症).

Study after study has shown the opposite to be true, says Sorace. “These prejudices are deeply rooted, but we are perhaps halfway to persuading people that the brain can cope. Then we have to persuade people that it is actually of benefit.”

【1】What will happen to the majority of the world’s languages?

A.They will become extinct in decades.

B.They will be learnt by more academics.

C.They will prevent the risk of dementia.

D.They will help people better communicate.

【2】What’s Bilingualism Matters intended to do?

    A.Find a replacement for English.

    B.Teach businesses marketing skills.

    C.Promote minority language learning.

    D.Influence governments’ policy making.

【3】What’s the top priority in preserving minority languages?

A.Getting rid of people’s fear for mental illnesses.

B.Finding the key to promoting people’s welfare.

C.Unlocking the secrets of undiscovered medicines.

    D.Correcting the misconception about Bilingualism.

【4】Which can be the best title for the text?

    A.The benefits of Bilingualism

    B.The founding of Bilingualism Matters

C.A new challenge facing language teaching

D.A professor fighting to save minority languages

  • 23、The traditional British pub is part of the scenery of British life. At a recent count, there are around 50000 of them in the UK, some of which date back to as far as the 5th and 6th centuries. The oldest---Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St. Albans---was established in 795.

Because of their abundance, the names pubs take were designed to be memorable---but more than that, they were designed to be visual. Outside any traditional pub worthy of its title, you’ll find a hanging signboard with a unique illustration(插图)that represents the name of the business. The practice is so well established that even new pubs copy it. But why do they exist at all?

The first British pub signs were created in the 12th century and were simple representations of beer containers and other brewing-related equipment used to inform passersby that establishments sold beer. This was Britain in the dark ages, when education was in short supply. Since most of the population were unable to read, pub signs were used to inform would-be customers that they could find a drink inside.

The earliest uses of pub names would reference the sign directly. People would arrange to meet “at the sign of the Eagle and Child” rather than “at the Eagle and Child.”

Today the tradition remains unchanged largely out of respect for the past, but many pub signs do have some functionality. Remote country pubs often use signboards to point the way to their doors from more trafficked(可贩卖的)paths. It’s a part of British culture that’s rapidly disappearing---more than 20,000 pubs have closed since 1980—but for now there are still more than enough around that you can take a moment to appreciate the history and symbolism behind a pub’s sign the next time you see one.

1What is special about British pub signs?

    A. They copy famous art   B. They show British life

    C. They have unique pictures   D. They include the history of the pub

2The first British pub signs were mainly used to ____.

    A. inspire passersby   B. inform passersby

    C. educate passersby   D. entertain passersby

3Modern British pub signs are different from the earliest ones in ___________.

    A. size   B. style

    C. material   D. purpose

4What is the text mainly about?

    A. The history of British pubs

    B. The importance of British pub signs

    C. Why British pubs have illustrated signs

    D. Why British pubs are unpopular nowadays

  • 24、Melinda Skaar wasn't expecting any phone calls. Skaar was working late in her office at the First Internet bank of California. By 10:45 that night she was almost ready to go home when the phone rang. Picking it up, she heard a guard shouting, “There is a fire! Get out of there.” Skaar didn't panic. She figured that it was just a small fire. Her office building was huge. There were 62 floors and her desk was on the 37th floor. Skaar called out to office mate Stephen Oksas, who also stayed late to work. But when they got out to the hallway, they were met by a cloud of black smoke. Rushing back, Skaar shut the door and filled the space at the bottom of the door with her jacket to keep the smoke out.

Then they called 911. Before they could call their families, however, the line went dead. That meant that they were completely cut off from the outside world. All they could do was wait and hope someone would come to rescue them.

Minutes ticked by. Smoke began to float into the office. Soon it became hard for them to breathe. Looking around, Skaar noticed a small workroom. It seemed to have cleaner air. So they crowded there. That helped for a while, but in time even the workroom was filled with deadly smoke. Hopeless, they tried to break the windows, but the glass was not breakable. Everything they threw at it just bounced back. Defeated, they struggled back to the workroom. They felt weak and dizzy. Soon Skaar found Oksas had passed out.

As Skaar and Oksas lay near death, rescuers were rushing to find them. At last, at about 4 a.m., firefighters found them.

Skaar and Oksas knew they were lucky to be alive. Sunday is my birthday, Skaar told a reporter. She would be turning 29, but she knew she had already got the best present possible—the gift of life.

1What did Skaar and Oksas do when they were stopped by the fire?

    A. they tried to run down the stairs.   B. they called their families.

    C. they waited where they were.   D. they rushed back and shut the door.

    A. calling 911 for help

    B. shutting the door and keeping the smoke out with a jacket

    C. breaking the windows to get some fresh air

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Stealing a Christmas tree is something that isn’t done every day. The motivation and timing were different.

I was a strong and determined boy aged 9 when Dad took sick and left Mom and me suddenly. Meanwhile, the Great Depression hit the country, but it made no difference to us. Since Mom was an invalid (病弱者),our existence depended on kind-hearted neighbors and my marvelous talent for survival.

I sold newspapers on street corners and occasionally picked up a bottle of milk from some front porch, a pie from a pantry window, or fruit from neighborhood trees.

During the first Christmas season without Dad, I got caught up in the yuletide (圣诞节期间) spirit. Like any other young boy, I enjoyed the holiday sights and sounds. My anticipation was high, but deep down in my heart was the fact that the man in the red suit skipped right over our little shack (木屋) and stopped only at houses with fireplaces. Meantime, there would be no considerable nice things to eat under the tree. Actually, there would be no tree. At least, a tree would ease the hurt. I resolved to “steal” a Christmas tree on Christmas Day and hurried to Mr. Peterson’s store.

I figured out that since the store was closed and the unsold trees were usually thrown away, I was starting fair game. As I prowled (潜行) among the snow-dusted trees beside the store, old man Peterson popped out of nowhere, yelling serious threats and chasing me away.

Nels Peterson was an old and mean bachelor. The following year, he installed a fence around the Christmas tree lot and locked the gate every night. I accepted the challenge-when people were bathed in the warm glow of family togetherness, I climbed the ladder that hugged the store wall and successfully stole one tree. Next year, the ladder was removed. Ultimately, it seemed that the minute he saw me, Mr. Peterson would chase me away.

Then came a Christmas that I shall always remember with fondness and warmth. My teacher at school involved our class in making a Christmas card for our favorite person, not including our family members.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I planned to make an impressive card for Nels Peterson.

Late Christmas Eve, surprisingly, the gate to Peterson’s store was open.
