二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、We already know that exercise is good for our bodies. Daily exercise fights the loss of muscle tone and flexibility that tends to increase slowly with age. And it turns out that it has the same fountain-of-youth effects on our brains.

Studies show that over time our minds also become less flexible and nimble. We lose the ability to process new information or switch between mental tasks quickly — and now we know why.

A recent study examined nearly 100 individual studies on exercise and brain function and discovered exercising an average of 52 hours over six months is "associated with improved cognitive(认知的)performance in older adults with and without cognitive damage." The type of exercises that are beneficial include aerobic, strength-training and mind-body.

In previous studies, researchers from Japan's University of Tsukuba wanted to explore this idea by looking at the effect of exercise on this weakening of the brain. They tested the oxygen ability of 60 Japanese men between the ages of 64 and 75 who did not show any signs of dementia or other mental symptoms. Next, they looked at the brain activity of each man as he completed a mental task. They found that the fitter a participant was, the less brain activity he used to complete the tasks when compared with his out-of-shape peers(同龄人).

Although much research is focused on how exercise may benefit an aging brain, exercise offers brain health benefits at almost any age, and this includes children. A review of 14 studies showed that more physically active schoolchildren do better academically. Exercise actually causes your brain to grow in size. So get moving and keep moving for best results.

1Which of the following best explains “nimble” underlined in Paragraph 2?

    A. Intelligent.   B. Dull.   C. Unique.   D. Simple.

2What can we infer about the participants’ less-active peers?

    A. They had significant brain advantages.   B. Their brains were younger than their age.

    C. They didn’t have to attend health classes.   D. Their cognitive performance would decline.

3How does the author support his idea?

    A. By making comparisons.   B. By analyzing study results.

    C. By describing the processes.   D. By telling his own experiences.

4What’s the main idea of the text?

    A. Exercise is beneficial for your bodies.

    B. Exercise is especially good for the old.

    C. Exercise can benefit your brain health.

    D. Exercise may lower your risk of mental problems.

  • 22、   One of the easiest ways to stop the spread of disease is to simply wash your hands. Twenty seconds of handwashing with soap and water can reduce illnesses and save lives. But, many people, especially children, do not have good handwashing habits. One problem is that children do not wash their hands often enough or long enough. Children may think that it is a tiresome thing to do.

To help handle this problem, two businesswomen from India created a product to turn handwashing into a fun activity.  Amanat Anand and Shubham Issar created a tool called SoaPen, aimed at teaching kids good handwashing habits and encouraging kids to wash their hands with soap appropriately and regularly.

“It’s such a simple habit to do, but the fact is that people aren’t doing it, and it’s resulting in actual deaths---which is shocking. So, we decided to come up with a fun method, said Issar.

As the name suggests, SoaPen is a pen made out of soap. The children draw on their hands with the soap pen and then wash the drawing off. If they don’t spend enough time washing it off, the colors remain on the children’s hands. Issar said it makes sure that children take enough time to wash their hands. This may be especially helpful in a classroom. Often a teacher does not have the time to make each child wash his hands properly.

Kids actually wash their hands for the proper amount of time because they’re drawing on their hands. To obliterate the drawing, they actually wash their hands instead of just going under water and, you know, a one-second wash and off.

Good news is that the school children in Mumbai, India, will soon most likely wash their hands after handling a pet. Issar and Anand stated that SoaPen to be created everywhere will help promote good habits through handwashing in the city across the globe.

    1Why is SoaPen invented?

A.To teach kids the importance of handwashing.

B.To make money from children consumers.

C.To help kids wash their hands correctly.

D.To rid kids of some kinds of diseases.

2Which statement will Issar probably agree with?

    A.SoaPen is designed for classrooms.

    B.Handwashing is anything but little.

C.Some teachers ignore kids’ health in school.

D.Kids don’t know the right way of handwashing.

3What does “obliterate” underlined in paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Remove. B.Reserve. C.Learn. D.Show.

4What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A.SoaPen has become popular worldwide.

B.Kids’ health should be paid more attention to.

C.SoaPen has been applied in Mumbai schools.

D.The inventors think SoaPen has a bright future.

  • 23、 José Salvador Alvarenga is a Salvadoran fisherman who spent 13 months at sea. He is the first person in recorded history to have survived in a small boat at sea for more than a year.

On November 17, 2012, Alvarenga set off on a professional fishing trip with a young fisherman named Ezequiel Cordoba, with whom he had never worked. Stepping aboard the ship from a fishing village on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s southern Chiapas state, they planned to be out about 30 hours hunting shark, tuna and mahimahi. A few hours into their voyage, a storm struck that lasted five days and blew them off course. Alvarenga called his boss on the ship’s radio for help, but it — and much of the rest of the boat’s electronics — had been disabled by the storm. The boat’s motor was also damaged.

A search party was sent, but after two days with no success, their boss gave up and assumed they had drowned. All on their tod and without food or supplies, the two fishermen survived by eating raw fish, turtles and jellyfish. They drank rainwater and turtle blood. As weeks turned to months, Cordoba became severely unwell from eating months of raw food and died.

Alvarenga then spent another nine months alone at sea, until he eventually spotted a small island. Abandoning his boat and swimming to shore, he almost immediately met a local couple who called police. He had reached the Marshall Islands. His journey lasted 438 days and his voyage is estimated to have covered between 5,500 to 6,700 miles.

【1】What happened to Alvarenga and Cordoba soon after they started the trip?

    A.Some sharks attacked the boat.

B.They got lost at sea because of a storm.

C.They fell into the sea after a huge wave.

D.Their boat was damaged hitting an iceberg.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “all on their tod” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.With no success.

    B.On their own.

    C.Day by day.

    D.With bad luck.

【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Alvarenga spent nine months on the island.

B.A local couple spotted his boat and called police.

C.It was the small island that finally saved Alvarenga.

D.The Marshall Islands covered between 5,500 to 6,700 miles.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.An excellent fisherman.
