二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Aspirin was discovered in 1897, and an explanation of how it works followed in 1995. That, in turn, has encouraged some research leads on making better pain relievers through something other than trial and error. This kind of discovery—answers first, explanations later—is called "intellectual debt". We gain understanding of what works without knowing why it works. We can put that understanding to use immediately, and then tell ourselves we'll figure out the details later. Sometimes we pay off the debt quickly; sometimes, as with aspirin, it takes a century; and sometimes we never pay it off at all.

In the Age of Intelligence, while machine learning presents lots of problems and gets things wrong, at least we know enough to be wary of the predictions produced by the system and to argue that they shouldn't be blindly followed: but if a system performs perfectly(and we don't know why), then we come to rely on it and forget about it and suffer consequences when it goes wrong.

It's the difference between knowing your car has faulty brakes and not knowing: both are bad, but if you know there is a problem with your brakes, you can increase your following distance, drive slowly and get to a mechanic as soon as possible. If you don't know, you' re likely to find out the hard way, at 80mph on the highway when the car in front of you comes to a sudden stop and your brakes give out.

We don't have much by way of solutions. Most important, we shouldn't trick ourselves into thinking that machine learning alone is all that matters. Indeed, without life value, machine learning may not be meaningful answers at all.

【1】What is the purpose of mentioning aspirin in the first paragraph?

A.To present the research process of aspirin.

B.To introduce a similar situation machine learning faces.

C.To show the difficulty in explaining how aspirin works.

D.To prove we can use something even when we don't understand.

【2】What does the underlined word "wary" probably mean in Paragraph 2?

    A.Negative.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Anxious.

    D.Watchful.

【3】How does the writer prove that it's potentially worse if a system performs perfectly?

    A.By telling a story.

    B.By giving a definition.

    C.By doing an experiment.

    D.By making comparison.

【4】Which of the following statements is the writer likely to agree with?

A.It's OK as long as a system works well.

B.It's impossible to pay off Intellectual debt.

C.It's unwise to rely blindly on machine learning.

D.It makes no sense to pay attention to life value.

  • 22、Imagine your smartphone’s screen gets broken, or your favourite boots get a hole in them. What do you do? You could buy a replacement. Or you could join the worldwide trend of taking your broken stuff to a “repair café”.

The Bower Reuse and Repair Centre has just launched Australia’s first repair café, in Sydney’s inner west. The crowd-funded project will hold weekly repair sessions focusing on bikes, furniture and electrical items.

The first repair café was set up in Amsterdam in 2009, and the Repair Cafe Foundation says there are now more than 400 around the world. A repair café is a free face-to-face meeting of skilled volunteers and local residents who want things fixed. Visitors bring broken items from home and watch, learn or help as the repairs get done. Some things are fixed during the event, while for more challenging items people might be referred to local speciality repair shops.

Last year, according to the ABS, Australians sent more than half a million tons of leather to landfill—more than ten times the amount that was reused or recycled. Mending represents an attempt to resist the throwaway culture. Repair cafés get people talking and give them the chance to network and learn about the local resources available. And, perhaps most surprisingly for anyone who considers mending to be some kind of drudgery, repair cafés can be fun and creative.

“In a circular economy, repair cafés fit right in”, says the organiser Martine Postma. In rejecting buy-use-throw, the circular economy aims to keep resources moving around in the economy, rather than moving them through it to a dead end, where they cannot be put into valuable use.

It might be quicker and easier to throw stuff in the bin, but it’s more expensive and less fun too.

【1】What can we know about the repair café in Sydney?

    A.It’s financed by the government.

B.Its visitors are involved in the fixing.

C.It’s the first repair café in the world.

D.All items are fixed during the event.

【2】Why does the author discuss landfill in paragraph 4?

A.To stress the difficulty of landfill.

B.To indicate the urgency of reusing.

    C.To support the throwaway culture.

D.To show the influence of repair cafés.

【3】What does the underlined word “drudgery” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Special network.

    B.Weekly meetings.

    C.Unpleasant work.

    D.Interesting games.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Places to Meet Up and Drink

    B.Repair and Share Every Month

C.Repair Cafes Continue the Art of Mending

D.Repair Cafes Fix Things- Including the Economy

  • 23、   I’m Jeff Logan, president of Logan Luxury Theaters Corporation. I’m very sorry to tell you many cinemas are at risk of closing permanently (永久). That’s something we would hate to see happen.

Watching the newest box office movie and eating a big bucket of popcorn is an experience that many of us have enjoyed for a very long time. We all have fond memories of going to a theater of our first dates or the first movie we saw with our children. A movie theater is so important to the fabric of the local community. It’s a place where we all gather, no matter what our interests, and no matter what ages, young and old, rich and poor.

But how much longer will classic theaters remain open? Just like other industries, movie theaters have been hit hard by the pandemic (流行病) and are going dark. The entire industry is being controlled by the pandemic, because the studios don't want to release their new movies until all the theaters can be open. As we all know, the theaters can’t do well and can’t get back to full 7-day a week at full speed operation without new movies to play.

Recently, the Logan Luxury 5 Cinema in Mitchell reopened for the weekends. However, like many theaters, it is only operating at about 10 percent capacity. Since opening, several new safety measures have been put in place. Block off every other row. People are asked to leave three seats between them and the next group. Staff spray the theater with disinfectant (消毒剂) after every show. And sanitizer stations can be found throughout the theater.

Even so, some people still aren’t comfortable going to a movie theater yet. I fully understand that. Anyhow, I just hope we must do something else to help out our local theaters, like taking part in a new national proposal called “Save Your Cinema.”

1What does the underlined word “fabric” in paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Typical feature. B.Basic structure. C.Public support. D.Common vision.

2Why are the film studios unwilling to release the new movies?

    A.Cinemas don’t operate normally.

    B.New movies aren’t welcomed.

C.People don’t like going to cinema.

D.Many cinemas go out of business.

3What can we infer about the Logan Luxury 5 Cinema after its reopening?

A.It makes a lot of money.

B.It does well in disease prevention.

C.It receives a large audience every day.

    D.It offers more enjoyable experience.

4What is the purpose of this text?

A.To share the good old days.

    B.To explain a social problem.

    C.To recommend a theater.

    D.To ask for people’s help.

  • 24、   Joanna Cole, whose Magic School Bus series made science both dazzling and goofily fun for generations of children, died on July 12 at age 75. Her death was announced by her publisher, Scholastic. The cause of death was not given.

She originally created Magic School Bus in 1986 with ilustrator Bruce Degen. The core idea of a crew of schoolchildren taking field trips into scientific concepts, bodily parts, into space and back to the age of dinosaurs—and always led by their teacher, the intrepid Ms. Frizzle——eventually spun out into dozens of tie-ins and more than 93 million copies in print, plus a beloved television show that aired for 18 years in more than 100 countries.

In the U. S, the original Magic School Bus TV series was broadcast by PBS for 18 years; in 2017, an updated version was launched in 2017 on Netflix with the first of four specials on the way in August.

The book series won many awards, including an NEA Foundation Award for Outstanding Service to Public Education.

Cole was born in Newark, N. J. in 1944. She said that her inspiration for Ms. Frizzle was her own fifth-grade teacher. Cole worked answering letters to the editor at Newsweek, as a school librarian and as a magazine and children’s book editor before becoming a full-time author herself. Her first title, published in 1971, was Cockroaches.

She observed that there were no other children’s books on the market about roaches already, and decided to leap into the opportunity. As she once told her publisher, Scholastic, “An article in the Wall Street Journal inspired me to do some research... Plus, I had ample time to study that creature in my low budget New York apartment!”

1What do we know about Joanna Cole?

A.She created The Magic School Bus with the help of Ms. Frizzle.

B.She observed that there were no children’s books on the market.

C.Joanna Cole worked answering letters as a full-time author.

D.She had plenty of time to study roaches in her apartment.

2What can we infer from the second paragraph?

A.The Magic School Bus is well-received in many countries.

B.Joanna Cole created The Magic School Bus in 1986 on her own.

C.The schoolchildren only take field trips into scientific concepts.

D.The Magic School Bus has not been adapted for television.

3What does the underlined word “intrepid” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Proud. B.Romantic. C.Sociable. D.Fearless.

4Which is the best title of this passage?

A.Joanna Cole made science dazzling and fun for children.

B.The Magic School Bus TV series won a lot of awards.

C.‘The Magic School Bus’ Series Author Joanna Cole has died.

D.Joanna Cole created The Magic School Bus inspired by Ms. Frizzle.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone, if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend was different from any other friends they had brought home. With a yellowish coat and tiny brown spots dropped across her nose, she was the cutest puppy I had ever seen.

When my husband got home that evening, he recognized the breed——a beagle puppy (猎兔犬), not more than twelve weeks old, he guessed. She ran to him right away and after dinner climbed into his lap to watch TV. By now the girls were both begging me to keep her.

She had no collar or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely. I tried to find seemingly logical reasons to explain my behavior.

By the end of the week, she was part of our family. We had named the puppy Molly. She was very intelligent and good with the girls. This was a good idea, I thought. It was time for the girls to take responsibility for another life, so they would learn the nurturing skills they’d need if they decided to become mommies when they grew up.

The following week, something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was asking for the return of a lost beagle puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook.
