二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It was late, about 10:15 p.m., when Janice Esposito arrived at the Bellport, New York, train station, jumped into her Honda Odyssey and began the 20 minute drive home to her husband and sever-year-old son. She'd just returned from visiting her mother and had traveled the route so many times. She practically drove on autopilot: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then - wham! Out of nowhere on that awful night, a car T-boned Esposito's minivan, forcing her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. She sat in the minivan, bruised (淤伤的) but mostly just stunned by the impact and by the vehicle's airbags.

As it happens, Pete DiPinto was getting ready for bed. He'd just closed his book and was crawling under the covers when he heard the high-pitched clang of metal on metal and shattering glass coming from not far outside his bedroom window. A volunteer firefighter and retired teacher, DiPinto, 64, never stopped to think. He grabbed a flashlight and, still dressed in his pajamas, ran out of the door. The first car he came upon, 2,000 feet from his front yard, was the one that had hit Esposito. Once DiPinto concluded the driver was , he looked around and spotted Esposito's minivan straddling (横跨) the railroad tracks.

And then he heard an upsetting sound: the bells signaling an oncoming train. "Honey, you're on the railroad tracks," DiPinto shouted to Esposito, "We have to get you off right now!" He yanked on the handle, but the door was smashed in and jammed shut. The heavy diesel (柴油) train, traveling at 65 miles per hour, was hurting toward them. Dipinto ran to the passenger side and threw open the door. He pushed aside the flat airbags, grabbed Esposico's arms, and pulled her toward him across the passenger seat until he could help her out and rapidly walk her to safety behind a signal box a few feet away. Within six seconds, he estimates, the train ploughed into the minivan.

【1】How did Janice Esposito feel when driving home?

    A.Careless.

    B.Light-hearted.

    C.Mindful.

    D.Stunned.

【2】What happened to Janice Esposito's minivan?

A.It got stuck on the back.

B.It crashed into a running train.

C.It was hit on the driver's side.

D.It broke down on Station Road.

【3】Which of the following can best describe Pete DiPinto?

    A.Calm and adventurous.

    B.Sensitive and creative.

    C.Warm-hearted and diligent.

    D.Decisive and experienced.

  • 22、Starting next year, Ford Motor Co. will allow parents to limit the speed at which their teenage children drive their car.

The company will make a new feature on many models that can limit teen drivers to 80 mph(130 kph), using a computer chip(芯片) in the key.

Parents in the United States, where most teens can get their driving license at 16, also have the option of programming the car key to limit the audio system volume(音量), and to sound continuous alarm if the driver doesn’t wear a seat belt.

More than half of parents surveyed worry that their teenage children are driving at unsafe speeds, talking on hand-held cell phones or texting while driving, or otherwise driving without due care and attention. More than a third of parents also are concerned that their teens do not always fasten their safety belts when driving.

“Our message to parents is, hey, we are proving you some conditions to give your new drivers that may allow you to feel a little more comfortable in giving them the car more often,” said Jim Buczkowski, Ford’s director of electronic and electrical systems engineering.

More than 5,000 US teens die each year in car crashes. The rate of crashes, fatal(致命的) and nonfatal, per mile driven for 16-year-old drivers is almost 10 times the rate for drivers aged 30 to 59, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The new feature, called “MyKey”, will be standard on an unspecified number of Ford models when the new models come out late next summer. The feature will spread to the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury Lineup as models are updated, spokesman Wes Sherwood said.

The company already uses computer chips in its keys to prevent thefts. The car won’t start unless it recognizes the chip in the key.

“It’s making use of existing technology, and through the magic of software, we’re able to build features on top of the features we already have,” Buczkowski said.

【1】According to the passage, MyKey can ______.

    A. limit speed and prevent thefts

    B. adjust the audio system’s volume

    C. remind drivers to answer the phone

    D. help drivers wear a seat belt

2According to Jim Buczkowski, MyKey ______.

    A. helps parents feel more comfortable in their cars

    B. provides parents more chances to get along with children

    C. helps parents feel less worried when giving cars to children

    D. discourages parents from giving cars to their children more often

3From the passage, we can learn that ______.

    A. teens often drive 10 times faster than adults

    B. many parents think their children drive too fast

    C. Ford will take over Lincoln and Mercury Lineup

    D. MyKey has nothing to do with existing technology

4Ford Motor Company’s new car key may be most welcomed by ______.

    A. teens B. passengers C. parents D. policemen

  • 23、Most people don’t notice I’m polite, which is the point. I am big and look less energetic. Still, every year or so, someone takes me aside and says, “You actually are polite, aren’t you?” I’m always thrilled. They noticed. That’s the thing. Actually, when we talk about politeness, we usually think of please; thank you; I like your hat; etc. All we need to do is to hear, not to notice.

When I was in high school, I read etiquette manuals(礼仪手册). No one noticed my politeness except for one kid. He yelled at me about it. “It’s strange that you are always so polite,” he said. I took that as praise and made a note to hide my politeness further. Real politeness, I believed, was invisible(看不见的). It adapted itself to the situation.

Politeness leaves door open. I’ve met so many people whom, if I had trusted my first impressions, I would never have wanted to meet again. Yet many of them are now great friends. One of those people is my wife. On our first date, she told me in detail that she had an operation to remove a cyst(囊肿) from her body. Of course, it killed the chemistry. But when I walked her home, I told her I’d had a great time. We talked a little after that. I kept everything pleasant and brief. Much later, I learned that she’d been having a very bad day in a very bad year.

People silently suffer from all kinds of terrible things. The good thing about politeness is you can regard these people exactly the same and wait to see what happens. You don’t have to have an opinion. You don’t need to make a judgment.

Last week, my two-year-old son, Abraham met a foreign woman in the playground. Out of curiosity, I suppose, he asked, “What’s your name?” The woman told him. Then he put out his little hand and said, “Nice to meet you!” Everyone laughed and he smiled. He shared with his firmest handshake, like I taught him.

【1】Why do many people think the author is impolite?

    A. Because he doesn’t look polite.

    B. Because he seldom says polite words.

    C. Because he doesn’t listen to others politely.

    D. Because he doesn’t behave politely towards strangers.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. The author’s good mangers.

    B. The author’s strange behavior.

    C. The author always making notes.

    D. The author reading etiquette manuals.

【3】What can we learn about politeness according to Paragraph 3?

    A. It can help people make friends.

    B. It can keep everything pleasant.

    C. It can be good for people’s health.

    D. It can give people second chances.

  • 24、Early on, by age nine perhaps, I discovered my passion for both reading and writing fiction. The discovery was sudden and unexpected: one very hot summer day in Birmingham (no air conditioning), while reading, I realized I was trembling with cold. I had become caught up in a Laura Ingalls Wilder description of a snowstorm. How is this possible? I asked myself, and the answer came immediately. It’s these words. Just these words have made me feel cold. Full of wonder and admiration for Laura’s writing, I thought, I’d like to be able to do that someday.

Nonetheless, I found myself beginning college as a premedical student with the intention of becoming a doctor. You see, I wanted to do good, or to be a good person, one devoted to the welfare of others. And what of my own love of reading and my interest in imaginative writing? Both still gave me immense pleasure, though I was failing chemistry. But what good is literature? I asked myself. And I asked my serious-minded student friends the same question. To spend my life merely doing what I loved seemed unacceptably self-centered.

One day in a literature class at my small, excellent liberal arts college, the knowledgeable professor, who was also dean of the college, posed a question that none of us could answer: “In what way are Huck of Huckleberry Finn and Pip of Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations alike?” While I did not know the answer, what I did know—in a strange flash of awareness—was that whatever the answer, it would be of crucial importance to the young man sitting across the corridor from me.

And who was he? A brilliant person, a troubled person for all his brilliance, someone I loved and admired.

The professor answered his own question. “Both are boys in search of a father.” And I knew my friend across the corridor, through literature, suddenly understood his own confusion. He knew in an instinctive way something of vital importance. What was true of those fictive boys was also true of him: he needed to become a guiding father to himself.

The class was over. As my friend Dwight and I walked out the door together into the hall, he said without looking at me, “And how can you doubt, Sena, that literature can do good in the world?” Without looking at him, but sure both his eyes and my eyes were shined with tears, I replied, “I know. I know.” I knew that literature could and does make ideas and feelings real, dramatic, and accessible in a way that enhances the quality of our lives.

And so I gave myself permission to embrace a literary life, both as reader and as writer. If something I might come to write offered one wonderful person a new and needed perspective, then I could justify choosing a life for myself in literature.

That was all a very long time ago, about half a century ago. My friend would die in an auto accident before he was twenty-one. And I would live to be extraordinarily happy in my choice of professions.

This I believe: that the arts must be a part of education at all levels, that the arts can and do offer us not only pleasure but also invaluable insights into ourselves and our world.

【1】What was the embarrassing situation Sena the author of the passage faced?

A.She was attracted by Laura’s writing but felt extremely cold.

B.She did not know how to answer the question but it was important.

C.She loved literature but wanted to do something good for humanity.

D.She admired her brilliant friend Dwight but he died in an accident.

【2】The author of the passage mentioned her friend Dwight to demonstrate_________.

A.only he could answer the professor’s question

B.he was the very person she loved and admired

C.literature becomes a guiding father to himself

D.literature offers us priceless insights into ourselves

【3】It can be concluded that the author decided to_________.

A.follow her passion for being a doctor

B.devote herself to literature in her life

C.be a reader to enhance the quality of her life

D.be a doctor and engaged in literature sometimes

【4】What might be the best title for the passage?

    A.A life in literature

    B.A medical career

    C.An unforgettable lesson

    D.An unexpected accident

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In a bakery store, some cakes are put in row on a shelf during the Christmas season. Here you may select the one which is most to your taste, and you are even allowed to sample (试吃) them before coming to a decision.

I have often wondered whether some people, who have no intention of making a purchase, would take advantage of this. One day I asked the shop girl this question, and the answer was yes. “Now there's one old gentleman, for instance,” she told me, “he comes here almost every week and samples each one of the cakes, though he never buys anything, and I suspect he never will. Well, let him come if he wants, and he is welcome to it. And I hope there are a lot more stores where he can go and get his share. He looks as if he needs it, and I suppose they can afford it.”

She was still speaking when an elderly gentleman limped(蹒跚) up to the counter and began looking closely at the row of cakes with great interest.“Hey, that's the very gentleman I've been talking about,”whispered the shop girl, and then turned to him,“Would you like to sample them, sir? Here's a spoon for you to use.” The elderly gentleman, who was poorly but neatly dressed, accepted the spoon and began eagerly to sample one after another of the cakes, only breaking off occasionally to wipe his red eyes with a large torn handkerchief. “This is quite good.” “This is not bad either, but a little too heavy.” All the time, it was quite evident that he sincerely believed that he might eventually buy one of these cakes, and I was positive that he did not for a moment feel that he was in any way cheating the store. Poor old man! Probably he had come down in the world and this sampling was all that was left to him from the time when he could afford to come and select his favorite cake.

Among the crowd of happy, prosperous looking Christmas shoppers, the little black figure of the old man seemed pitiful and out of place.
