  • 27、35-year-old Matt Doogue, a nature photographer, has found himself on the right way and his work is now featured in National Geographic. However, things were different nine years ago when he was suffering from depression. “In the beginning, I was so paranoid (妄想的) and angry that I couldn’t leave the house,” says Doogue. “When I attempted to end my life, I knew I needed to see doctors and got treatment, but I knew that I needed something more.” And that’s when he first found his passion for taking pictures of insects.

Now, Doogue found that looking at insects through a camera helped him in ways he could never have imagined—and it proved to be the lifeline he needed. It had a “calming effect” that helped him to “disconnect” from stress; and his astonishing images, showing insects and spiders in amazing detail against brightly colored backgrounds, caught the eye of publishers at National Geographic. “I ended up as one of their featured photographers,” recalled Doogue. “It was the peak of my career. It was incredible.”

Originally from Salford, Greater Manchester, he now lives in Armadale, West Lothian, Scotland. Though he fears that Scotland is in the middle of an “epidemic” of male suicide (自杀), he believes that sharing his love of nature photography can help others to cope with their mental health issues as well. “I think the problem is this ‘man-up’ approach; the idea that men need to be strong puts so much pressure on young males to be fine all the time, which pushes men to the gloomy side,” says Doogue. “This is why I try and be so open about my own experience. Whenever I am out with my camera, I don’t think about my other worries. It is just me and the environment around me. You can lose yourself in a spider making its web.”

【1】What is the first paragraph mainly about?

  • 28、“To me, love is the most important thing. What could be more healing than love?”

These words, like lines from a poem, are from Robin, who founded the Bumi Sehat Bali Clinic in central Ubud. Now the clinic provides treatment or educational support for over 100, 000 people annually.

Giving birth to her first child at nineteen, Robin moved to Hawaii after college, working for several years on a farm, where she taught farming practices and poetry. But in 1991, she received heartbreaking news. Her idyllic life on the farm was turned upside down when her sister, expecting a child in Alabama, died of pregnancy complications (孕娠并发症) .

“When my dear sister passed away, I realized mothers were dying everywhere. In countries with increased poverty, some people can’t afford to go to the hospital. What motivated me initially was my love for my sister, but this soon grew into a concern for mothers and children all over the world.” Robin’s feelings for her sister were transformed into a desire to help women everywhere in need.

To ensure that children are born healthy, nutritionally balanced meals are provided for expecting mothers free of charge. Those who lack housing are free to stay as long as it is necessary. The clinic also sees patients of all ages who have symptoms unrelated to childbirth, while providing facilities for language learning and IT education, and annually training over 6, 000 nursing and midwifery (助产) students, backed by a scholarship program.

Just as Robin said, love is to be found inside the Bumi Schat Bali Clinic. Perhaps feelings of showing kindness toward others and wanting to make the world a better place are the key to a brighter tomorrow.

    B.Her desire to help children.

C.Her sorrow for her sister’s death.

D.Her loss of interest in poetry.

    B.It offers mothers-to-be free diets.

  • 29、Last spring I talked to a particularly patient and helpful salesman at the local cellphone store about how to access international service, since I was headed to Zurich, Switzerland, in June. He was excited and told me his grandfather came from Basel.

“If I get there,” I promised, “I’ll send you a postcard.”

I’m not sure whether he knew what a postcard was, nor do I remember the last time I sent a postcard. The last one I received, I know, was a lonely one posted by friends visiting Africa a few years ago. They were back a good two months before their card fell into my mailbox, looking as if it might have walked and swum the distance on its own.

Postcards filled my childhood and early adulthood. I sent plenty of them home and to friends on my ravels and collected scores from all comers of the globe. Places I’d been or hadn’t, it didn’t really matter.

But who sends postcards anymore? What do postcards matter when you can see any place with the Internet?

By his expression, I knew my cellphone customer representative wasn’t expecting me to follow through. And I didn’t, the following June, for I failed to find s single postcard of Basel in Zurich. But then I went to Basel in September and I chose and sent two postcards in care of my acquaintance (相识的人) there.

Over the next few months, I wondered if he’d gotten them, but I had no reason to visit the store until today, when I couldn’t manage some of my smartphone’s sound settings. And there he was. He didn’t recognize me at first, but once I realized it was him I asked, “Did you get the postcards from Basel?”

He looked at me with fresh and astonished eyes. “Oh, it’s you! I’ve got them posted in my room. My mom loves them, too. I never thought you were serious.”

That’s one reliable customer-relations bond followed through thanks to two small postcards from a grandfather’s birthplace.

【1】The postcard from Africa was ______.

    A.sent by a stranger

    B.the author’s favorite one

C.in the mail for a long time

    A.Communicating by postcards.

    B.Selling postcards to people.

    C.Traveling around Europe.

    D.Going for long walks.

【3】How did the salesman react to the author’s offer?

    A.He was worried about it.

B.He was looking forward to it.

    C.He was embarrassed about it.

    D.He didn’t take it seriously.

【4】What can be a suitable tile for the text?

    A.Friends at the store

    B.A lesson from Basel

    C.A story of a salesman’s mother

    D.A reliable relationship from postcards
