二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、In a certain store where they sell puddings, a number of these delicious things are laid out in a row during the Christmas season. Here you may select the one which is most to your taste, and you are even allowed to sample them before coming to a decision.

I have often wondered whether some people, who had no intention of making a purchase, would take advantage of this privilege. One day I asked this question of the shop girl, and I learned it was indeed the case. “Now there’s one old gentleman, for instance,” she told me, “he comes here almost every week and samples each one of the puddings, though he never buys anything, and I suspect he never will. I remember him from last year and the year before that, too. Well, let him come if he wants it, and welcome to it. And what’s more, I hope there are a lot more stores where he can go and get his share. He looks as if he needed it all right, and I suppose they can afford it.”

She was still speaking when an elderly gentleman limped up to the counter and began looking closely at the row of puddings with great interest. “Why, that’s the very gentleman I’ve been telling you about,” whispered the shop girl. “Just watch him now.” And then turning to him: “Would you like to sample them, sir? Here’s a spoon for you to use. “The elderly gentleman, who was poorly but neatly dressed, accepted the spoon and began eagerly to sample one after another of the puddings, only breaking off occasionally to wipe his red eyes with a large torn handkerchief. “This is quite good”. “This is not bad either, but a little too heavy”. All the time it was quite evident that he sincerely believed that he might eventually buy one of these puddings, and I am positive that he did not for a moment feel that he was in any way cheating the store. Poor old chap! Probably he had come down in the world and this sampling was all that was left him from the time when he could afford to come and select his favorite pudding.

Amidst the crowd of happy, prosperous looking Christmas shoppers, the little black figure of the old man seemed pitiful and out of place, and in a burst of benevolence, I went up to him and said:

“Pardon me, sir, will you do me a favor? Let me purchase you one of these puddings. It would give me such pleasure.”

He jumped back as if he had been stung, and the blood rushed into his wrinkled face.

“Excuse me,” he said, with more dignity than I would have thought possible considering his appearance, “I do not believe I have the pleasure of knowing you. Undoubtedly you have mistaken me for someone else.” And with a quick decision he turned to the shop girl and said in a loud voice, “Kindly pack me up this one here. I will take it with me.” He pointed at one of the largest and most expensive of the puddings.

The girl took down the pudding from its stand and started to make a parcel of it, While he pulled out a worn little black pocketbook and began counting out shillings and pennies on to the counter. To save his “honor”, he had been forced into a purchase which he could not possibly afford. How I longed for the power to unsay my tactless words! It was too late though, and I felt that the kindest thing I could do now would be walk away.

“You pay at the desk,” the shop girl was telling him, but he did not seem to understand and kept trying to put the coins into her hand. And that was the last I saw or heard of the old man. Now he can never go there to sample puddings and more.

  • 27、Hell comes to Pearl Harbor

It was Sunday, December 7,1941. As usual, the wakeup call came at 5:45 a.m. The men aboard the warship USS Arizona stretched and rubbed their eyes. Seaman Russell Warriner was awakened by Quartermaster Louis Conter. Russell made his bed and helped clean the huge, shared room. The men went to the washroom, dressed in their uniforms and sat down to breakfast. It looked like it would be a normal day on board the ship.

But nobody ate their breakfast: at that moment, there was a huge crashing sound from above. The ship shook violently and the men looked at each other in horror. Above their heads, hundreds of Japanese planes circled like eagles. They were diving down to drop bombs on Pearl Harbor. The scream of their engines was deafening. As bombs thundered all around, clouds of black smoke rose into the sky and hung over the sea. Russell felt his blood freeze, but he quickly came to himself and rushed up to the deck. Moments later, a bomb hit the USS Arizona and Russell was thrown more than 100 meters across the ship. He suffered serious burns on his hands, arms and legs, and watched many of his friends die.

Louis, meanwhile, also standing on the deck, was lucky not to be thrown into the sea. With only minor injuries, he was able to help others who were severely burnt and in terrible pain. After receiving the order to abandon ship, Louis saved more men from the water, dragging them into the lifeboat. In the chaos and confusion after the attack, the US Navy sent a message to his family that Louis had been killed in the attack. Luckily, he was able to get in touch with them before the message arrived. Despite his remarkable actions, Louis did not think that he was a hero. “The heroes are the ones that gave their lives that day,” he said.

Russell was saved from the water, but he was badly burnt, bleeding heavily. Fortunately, he was taken to hospital and survived. For many years, Russell refused to talk about what happened that morning, describing it simply as “hell”. His wife Elsa said, “When he opened up later on, he always mentioned the horror of it.”

Louis and Russell would never forget the terrible scene of the attack, but they were fortunate enough to be among the few survivors from the Arizona. Nobody had expected the bombing. Japan had hatched a plot to launch a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, so the attack began without warning and without declaring war on the United States. The attack destroyed nearly 20 American ships and over 180 airplanes. In total, more than 2,000 American people were killed and over 1,000 others were wounded that day. More than 1,000 people aboard the Arizona lost their lives. Out of 37 sets of brothers, Russell and his brother were the only full pair to survive the attack.

The surprise attack came as a great shock to the whole nation. The next day, President Roosevelt delivered his famous Pearl Harbor Speech, in which he described December 7 as “a date which will live in infamy” and asked that the US Congress declare war on Japan. In response to the attack and the president’s address, the United States joined the Second World War.

Today, the USS Arizona lies where it sank: in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Its location is marked with a memorial shaped like a bridge, which crosses the ship’s sunken remains . Each year, more than two million people visit the memorial. They come to see the shadow of the ship at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, to learn about the attack, to show respect for those who had lost their lives in the attack and to pray for world peace. Although about eight decades has passed, the attack on Pearl Harbor, one of the darkest episodes in American history, will never be forgotten.

【1】When did Japanese planes attack Pearl Harbor?

    A.In the morning.

    B.At noon.

    C.In the afternoon.

    D.At midnight.

【2】What can we know about Russell and Louis from the passage?

A.Russell lost his hands, arms and legs in the attack.

B.Russell was seriously burned in the attack.

C.Louis’s family were sad to hear that he was killed.

D.Louis was proud of his remarkable actions.

【3】Which of the following words can best describe Louis?

    A.Kind and skilled.

    B.Helpful and clever.

    C.Brave and clever.

    D.Brave and modest.

【4】Which of the following statements is NOT true according to Paragraph 5?

A.Many American ships and airplanes were destroyed in the attack.

B.More than 1,000 people aboard the Arizona were killed.

C.2,000 Americans were killed and 1,000 others were wounded in the war.

D.Both Russell and his brother survived the attack.

  • 28、Elephant Conservation

    Country: Thailand

This is a working vacation at a wildlife centre. Anyone can become a volunteer if he/she agrees to help the elephant keepers with tasks.

    Daily tasks

Gather the elephants at 6:30 a.m. Take them to look for food in the forest. Clean the enclosure. Swim with the elephants in the lake in the afternoon. If volunteers want to relax after work, they can watch satellite television.

    How this vacation helps

If these elephants hadn’t been rescued, they would still be living on the streets of Bangkok. A rural environment is much better for them than an urban environment where there is lots of pollution.

    Gorilla Safari

    Countries: Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda

Departures: Aug.—Dec., 2—3 departures per month

    Extra: gorilla permit £220

If you’re lucky, you’ll see lions, elephants and rhinos on safari. The highlight of the trip is the opportunity to see gorillas in the mountain forests. However, you must be in good health—if a gorilla caught a cold, it would be extremely harmful to its whole family.

    How this vacation helps

There are only about 600 mountain gorillas left in the world as human activities have reduced the area where they can live. When you buy a permit, this will pay for the protection of the national park.

    Polar Bear Watching

    Country: Canada

Departures: sixty trips between Oct. 1—Nov. 19

Every October and November, groups of polar bears gather in Hudson Bay. As they are normally lonely creatures, this is unusual. The bears wait for the ocean to freeze so that they can hunt seals, so this is the perfect opportunity to see them.

    How this vacation helps

If the Arctic ice cap melts due to global warming, polar bears will be in danger. We give a share of our profits to the Polar Bears Alive Charity.

    Your comment

These awesome bears get all the liquid they need from their food.

【1】What will an elephant volunteer do?

    A.Take food for elephants at 6:30 a.m.

    B.Watch satellite television on elephants.

C.Wash elephants in the lake in the afternoon.

    D.Sweep the houses of elephants.

【2】What do we know about Gorilla Safari?

A.You can find gorillas in Kenya and Canada.

B.There are about 10 trips to visit gorillas.

C.Visitors need to pay $220 to see 600 gorillas.

D.You might get a cold in the mountain forests.

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

A.All three activities need pay money.

B.Visitors can visit the three places in spring.

C.Polar bears don’t need to drink water.

D.The animals mentioned are all in danger.

  • 29、   As teachers we wonder if we were able to teach them or reach them. They pull at our heartstrings. You know, the students who run, not walk, into the room, bounce around in their seats, have a need to get out of their seats every five minutes or so, throw something away, and always have an excuse to leave their seats.

Our classes are 80 minutes long instead of the traditional 40 minutes. There are no bells to signal the beginning and ending of a lesson.

On this particular day, I am to be observed by two professors. Of course, I am proud of the fact that the class is conducted entirely in Spanish and the students do feel comfortable expressing themselves in Spanish. They come to this Spanish class with a Spanish name.

On this day, Paco comes running through the door with a sandwich in hand and a bowl of sauce for dipping. “ After all, my lunch is not until next period. I'm hungry and I hope you don’t mind if I just quickly eat this sandwich.”

I say, “Go ahead, Paco, finish your sandwich.”

All the students are working in their groups, engaged in the assigned activity. Suddenly, Paco raises his hand. “ Mrs. M., it is raining in my pants.” I know that it was his way of requesting to go to the bathroom. You can just imagine the laughter from the other students and the chuckles from visiting professors.

I always wondered just how much Spanish Paco learned in that class, but I know he learned more than just Spanish based on an email he recently wrote to me:

“ I know I was a handful but you actually cared. You knew I had potential but I messed up a lot and you never backed down..., everything you taught me about Spanish. My attitude to life will stick with me the rest of my days...”

1What does the underlined sentence mean ?

A.They become a serious headache to us. B.They are a heavy load on our mind

C.They come into our mind naturally. D.They make us feel strong sympathy.

2What was special in that particular class that day ?

A.Two professors came to judge the writers.

B.The class had to be entirely conducted in Spanish.

C.Every student in the Spanish class needed a Spanish name.

D.The class could begin and end at any time.

3What made the students and visiting professors laugh ?

A.Paco's eating sandwich with sauce. B.Paco's humorous requesting to go to the toilet.

C.Paco's complaining about the 80-minute class. D.Paco's terrible way of speaking Spanish.

4Why did Paco write an email to the writer ?

A.To show his concern. B.To prove his level of Spanish.

C.To express his gratitude. D.To apologize for his behavior.
