二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter altogether.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic condition. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.

An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages(堵塞) that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

【1】What is often the cause of troubles on the road according to the passage?

    A.Road conditions.

    B.The speed of modern life.

    C.The large number of cars.

    D.The behavior of the drivers.

【2】What does the write think a good driver should do?       .

A.Beat back when forced to face rude driving.

B.Be able to recognize politeness when he sees it.

C.Join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel.

D.Encourage old ladies to cross the road whenever they want to.

【3】What does the underlined word “give-and-take” in the passage mean?

    A.Politeness and impoliteness.

    B.Good manners and bad manners.

C.Offering help to others as much as possible.

D.Willingness of each person to give in to each other’s wishes.

【4】What can be the best title of the passage?

    A.Road Politeness

    B.Traffic Problems

    C.Bad Manners on the Road

    D.Good Drivers and Bad Drivers

  • 27、   I'd been asked to go to an editors office with the old program ."We have a story we think you'd be perfect for". Here was the Topic: We want you to write about how middle-aged men have no friends. Seeing that, I couldn't help thinking"Excuse me? I have plenty of friends. " Then the editor told me there were all sorts of evidence out there to show how men, as they age, let their close friendships go, and that the fact can cause all sorts of problems and have a terrible effect on their health.

As I walked back to my desk in the newsroom - a distance of maybe 100 yards - I quickly reviewed my friend list. First of all, there was my friend Mark, Wait, how often do we actually hang out? Maybe four or five times a year? And then there was another best friend from high school, Rory and... I actually could not remember the last time I'd seen him.

There were all those other good friends who seemed as if they've still in my life because we follow one another via social media, but as I ran down the list of those I'd consider real, true, lifelong friends, I realized that it had been years since I saw many of them, even decades for a few.

By the time I got back to my desk, I realized that I was indeed perfect for this story, not because I was unusual in any way, but because my story was very, very typical. And as I looked into what that means, I realized that in the long term, I was heading down a path that was very, very dangerous. And I knew I need a change.

1How did the author react when he saw the topic?

A.He showed an interest in it. B.He knew the editor was joking.

C.He felt surprised and doubtful. D.He thought it was perfect for him,

2What did the author realize after walking hack to the newsroom?

A.He wasn't popular with others. B.He had let his best friends go.

C.He had close friends in his life. D.He hadn't made any true friends.

3To make a change, what will the author probably do?

    A.Find a new job. B.Lead a different lifestyle.

C.Make more new friends. D.Get back in touch with old friends.

4Which of the following statements would the author agree with?

A.It is hard to make lifelong time friends

B.Many men of his age have no friends.

C.He is very different from other middle-aged men.

D.Many people today consider friendships unimportant.

  • 28、If you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch an original performance of a Shakespeare's play in Elizabethan England. What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you'd voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds.

The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best known example is science fiction The Time Machine, which was written by H. G. Wells and published in 1895 for the first time. It was adapted for at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. The term “time machine” , invented by Wells, is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.

But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called “wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts to other periods. Einstein's theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship going at nearly the speed of light.

Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveler wasn't born, how would he travel back in time?

And would you really like to visit the future? In H. G. Wells' book, the main character travels into distant time. He arrives at a beach where he is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles(触角). If that's what's in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.

【1】Why is the novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2?

    A.To praise the contribution of H. G . Wells.

B.To state the story's different features.

C.To prove the long history of time travel.

D.To show people's interest in time travel.

【2】What can we know about Einstein's and Hawking's theories?

A.They push the invention of the first spaceship.

B.There is the possibility to invent the time machine.

C.They have been proved wrong by some time travelers.

D.There are differences in many ways between them.

【3】What does the “grandfather paradox” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A.The traveler is prevented from meeting his grandfather.

B.The traveler goes back in time to seek for his grandfather.

C.The grandfather's death makes the traveler's birth impossible.

D.The reunion of the traveler and his grandfather brings happiness.

【4】According to the passage, what is probably the author's attitude towards time travel?

    A.Negative.

    B.Unclear.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Indifferent.

  • 29、As is well known, making art is good for your health. It can reduce stress and improve your spirit. 【1】 All you need to do is just make art. And the more you do it, the better. Here’re some tips to help you kick-start your creative art habit.

【2】 In fact, there’re no differences in health outcomes between those who are identified as experienced in art and those who aren’t. So no matter your level, you could feel all the good things that come with making art.

Figure out your mode of creative expression. There’re many choices available: painting, cooking, baking, woodworking, sewing — the sky’s the limit. 【3】 Anything that sets off your creative mind is good for you. And don’t feel like you have to stick to one thing. Mix it up — do whatever you’re in the mood for.

Focus on the making and let go of expectations. Once you have your art materials, here comes the fun part. Let yourself get lost in the process and just play. It’s the physical act of making art that causes those feelings of stress relief and positive spirit, not what you make. 【4】

Think about making art like any healthy habit. Just as you make time to exercise and hang out with friends, you should make time for your artistic creation. You don’t even need a few hours. 【5】 In addition to carving out time, carve out a physical space for art. You could set up a corner table for your art supplies. If space is an issue, put them all in a container that’s easily accessible.

    A.Keep an open mind.

    B.Improve yourself with regular practice.

C.Don’t require yourself to have great skills.

D.However, developing interest in art takes little time.

E.Doing just 10 minutes of art each day can do wonders.

F.But you don’t have to be a fill-time artist to get these benefits.

G.So, you don’t even need to finish what you’re making to feel those health benefits.
